Michaela DePrince

Recommended Posts

It's puzzling -- and sad -- that there is no mention of her at all anywhere on the Boston Ballet web site: https://www.bostonballet.org/

I thought there might be a memorial tribute notice. She's not listed with the roster of dancers. Does anybody know if she was originally on the roster for fall?

The Dutch National Ballet has a tribute, even though she left that company in 2022: https://www.operaballet.nl/en/news/memoriam-michaela-deprince

When I looked at their roster a few weeks back she was not listed.  Such a devastating loss💔

I also wondered about no mention of her on BB's site.  Later this afternoon someone on Instagram also said that she wasn't on the roster a few weeks ago.  BB did post on its Instagram.  I thought it was a minimal tribute.

I checked the Internet Archive, and DePrince was listed on Boston Ballet's website as recently as May 28, which is the most recent version of the webpage available on the Internet Archive:

Michaela's mother, Elaine DePrince, also died this week, on Wednesday, as reported on the public-facing content of her Facebook page.

Like others, I was surprised and saddened to learn of Michaela's death. She was so captivating in First Position that even non-dance people in my life would talk to me about her and her story.

I just clicked on the link @fondoffouettes provided for Elaine DePrince’s public-facing Facebook page, and this very sad update was posted about an hour ago:

OFFICIAL FAMILY STATEMENT UPDATE 9/14/24:
Thank you to everyone for your outpouring of support in response to Michaela’s passing, as well as those in the press who have reached out directly to the family for statements. The entire family is so grateful and comforted by your support.
There has been a great deal of speculation online so the family would like to officially set the record straight about a few things. The last few days have been even more difficult than most people realize because the family has also been dealing with the death of Michaela’s adoptive mother Elaine DePrince.
Michaela passed away on September 10th, not the 13th as some places have reported. Her mother Elaine died during a routine procedure in preparation for a surgery on September 11th. Michaela died before Elaine and Elaine did not know of Michaela’s passing at the time of her procedure. As unbelievable as it may seem, the two deaths were completely unrelated. The only way we can make sense of the senseless is that Elaine, who had already lost three children many years ago, was by the grace of God spared the pain of experiencing the lost of a fourth child.
What the family is going through right now is truly unimaginably painful. Grieving two family members who died within a 24 hour period is tragic and devastating. We continue to ask for privacy and appreciate you directing anyone sharing incorrect information and speculation to this post.
Please continue to direct all press inquires and words of support for the family to Jess Volinski, the family spokesperson, via email at jessicavolinski@gmail.com
Thank you

Not only are the mind-numbing tragedies this family has had to endure nearly impossible to comprehend, they make it so difficult for me to express how much I've admired both Michaela and Elaine over the years, and how much their story has meant to so many people.  I hope that everyone can take comfort in how much good they were able to achieve with their kindness and decency.  Bravo, and godspeed to both.

She was not on the roster for the fall. She joined the company in 2021, but over the few years there, she didn't dance very much. Boston did a tribute on their Instagram and Facebook pages.  Additionally, there was a memorial service in her honor yesterday in Boston, which was arranged by some of the dancers and attended by dancers, staff and others.
