Emma
Neither here nor there but why does the Times have a photo of SAB students in an article about ABT ... Link to comment
rg
seems as if the picture desk thinks the School of American Ballet is directly connected to the American Ballet Theatre... Link to comment
pherank
The only ballet image they could get for free? ;) Link to comment
Balanchinomane
This article was linked from my Twitter feed from @BroadwayWorld headlined "New York City Ballet Dancers Threaten a Strike" with a photo from R+J. My heart skipped a beat. BroadwayWorld has since deleted the tweet. Edited January 19, 2018 by Balanchinomane Link to comment

its the mom
I find it sad that people are more upset about the picture used in the article than the content of the article and what it means to the dancers. Link to comment
Emma
I didn't mean to imply I don't think it's awful for the dancers. But I don't have much more to say than that -- the state of the arts is depressing -- but that adds nothing to the conversation. I have no insights. I do expect journalists to do a better job covering the dispute. Link to comment
lmspear
They've got a picture of the ABT corps in Swan Lake posted with the article now. Link to comment
Amy Reusch
I complained. (Probably not the first person to do so, and hopefully one of many) Glad to see they fixed it. Link to comment
pherank
Is the last line of the first paragraph supposed to read, "an acceptable cont[r]act proposal"? Not that an editor hasn't gone carefully over this article. ;) These labor negotiations are not unusual - general contracts are renegotiated every certain number of years. And it is often rather tense because both sides have to find agreement on the main issues. Money is always an issue. Usually the details of the negotiation are kept from the public - until some angry person leaks details to the media. Edited January 20, 2018 by pherank Link to comment
onxmyxtoes
Several of the dancers posted on their public instagrams details about the negotiations, so it's not surprising that this got picked up by reporters. Link to comment
fondoffouettes
ABT’s own Instagram account posted a story with photos about the negotiations. It didn’t offer any details, but I was surprised to see the company featuring the negotiations in its official social media channel. The ABT Instagram account seems very dancer-driven, but I have to assume the marketing department still controls it. Edited January 20, 2018 by fondoffouettes Link to comment
its the mom
The instagram account is run by the dancers. It says it at the top of the account. Edited January 20, 2018 by its the mom Link to comment

All the more reason they deserve raises. The content is so well-done that I assumed it was created by a social media manager. The voice is remarkably consistent across posts, so I wonder if one particular dancer writes most of the content. He or she is better than most marketing professionals who do social media for a living. Link to comment
nanushka
It seems that a strike has been averted and that the contract dispute has been resolved, with at least some degree of success for the dancers and stage managers: Link to comment
Helene
I hope there's a replacement post, and that the news hasn't changed. Link to comment
