Um, was it an unintentional blunder to have the Australian Ballet segment end an hour before the Bolshoi segment begins?

The time-zone difference is huge and it forces the Australians to do "morning" class at noon, while the Bolshoi pads its first hour with dubious material because its morning classes begin an hour later. However, this interruption slams the breaks on any sense of momentum.

I'm sorry the National Ballet of Canada and San Francisco Ballet seem to have dropped the project.

But I'm glad to see the event back on YouTube. Much, much smoother viewing.

there were many other listed in the main page, with links to FB streams. If anything, there were so many simultaneous broadcasts. Of course, if all you cared about were the "big 3" listed on the top then you can't expect 3 companies to provide 24hrs of continuous streaming contents.

It is called World Ballet DAY and was conceived as a nearly all-day relay between continents. If memory serves, it came to about 20 hours of continuous coverage. That was the selling point. Once the primary North American participants dropped out, this fell by the wayside.

It used to be very convenient watching the stream on a single channel. Now indeed there is a lot of overlap in the Pacific and even more in Europe, and I honestly wonder how many people are willing to go stream-hopping. Perhaps the initiated, but the point of the event is to popularize the art form, so watching it should be made as easy as possible.

And once again the Bolshoi seems to have no end of difficulty understanding the concept of LIVE.

It's very difficult to tell where the original livestream could be seen. I find a collection of individual segments archived to YouTube, but I don't get a sense that there was ever a single "home" page for this online event. Am I wrong? Did the WBD website successfully stream the event this year?
The Royal Ballet web and YouTube pages seem to be the best bet for finding an organized presentation, and some sort of explanation.

There was no unified stream. Each company streamed its segment on its own platforms, and that's all.

I've set a calendar reminder for myself so that I can watch the archived versions of the main streams (Australian Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and Royal Ballet) within the 30-day period that they are up on YouTube. I wasn't able to watch on the actual day, and I'm increasingly unwilling to search out the mishmash of individual streams and their locations. The YouTube streaming quality is still so much better than the "Facebook live" version, which is not reliable.

Watching the company classes and rehearsals is my favourite part. I could do without the cheesy commentary and marketing bits, but I see where they have their place in the wider outreach effort. Still, it seems like more and more companies are offering "inside looks" via livestreams of rehearsals throughout the year, which is wonderful

I completely agree that Facebook streams are not of the same quality - and much about Facebook remains mired in a 1990's web design world. Their notion of "innovation" is often laughable. Just a mess.
I enjoy the company classes and rehearsals of ballets, too. Company classes are rarely visible to the audience (unless one has taken ballet classes), so that's the precious part for me. It's kind of sad that we're losing our chance to see these classes - just for one day.

You can see the amount of work that went into collecting this list together. Work that should have been done by the WBD people in the first place. Obviously this year's results are a declaration of sorts that it was too much trouble to try to synch everyone up with a single live stream. Only a BBC, ABC, etc. type of media organization has the technology and people power to make that work well.

Perhaps, but reality is often more complex that we realize. For example, in his memoirs Valery Lagunov, another Bolshoi coach, described Akimov and Vladimir Nikonov as Party stooges.

I do not have this book, so could you explain what exactly Valery Lagunov meant? I remember a few years back watching several classes taken by Boris Akimov, and he was equally courteous to all dancers and spectators, and full of the most incredible vigour and enthusiasm for his work.

There is a reference on p. 221 of The Thorns and Roses of Big [Bolshoi] Ballet in which he identifies Akimov and Nikonov as the official leaders of the ballet company's Communist Party cell, who used this influence to advance their pupils, whom Lagunov did not think deserved it.

Lagunov does not sugarcoat his views, highlighting the shortcomings of his own pupils as well.

Well, there was also this post from Ekaterina Shipulina mocking the Bolshoi's contribution:
"World Ballet Day.✌️ From those who were not invited to the 'live' shoot.😜🎬📽️ My own live report.👍😝"

In response to the question whether she could at least have taken part in the broadcast's classes, which were so sparsely attended, Shipulina replied, "In our [theater] this entire comedy was recorded in advance and strictly by invitation. There was no live transmission, as in other theaters, unfortunately!😳"

In response to another question, "a 'live' recorded a week in advance according to party lists?" she answered, "staged and edited😂".

She's not the first Bolshoi dancer to say publicly that dancers are pre-selected for every aspect of the shoot, even morning class. So I wouldn't take any of it at face value.

There's always an extra warm top layer of politics (comfy!) surrounding any state sponsored company. It's unavoidable. We just hope for quality footage of the dancers and choreographers.

That is disappointing to here that the Bolshoi's contribution is staged. This is the first year Shipulina was not seen taking class and I always loved watching her.

Especially when the company works a stone's throw from the Kremlin. But viewers have a right to know that the "live" they are streaming is not live. And I think it's better if they understand that they're being shown nothing like the entire company, and that if they're not seeing certain dancers consistently, it's more likely because they're not favored by management, rather than because they're not interested in participating.

I'm very sorry that the Bolshoi is so far from the spirit of the event. I hope the National Ballet of Canada and San Francisco Ballet find the time and resources to rejoin. Their presence is also needed to eliminate the aftertaste of the Bolshoi's insincerity. I say that as a genuine admirer of the Moscow style who despairs over what is happening to the Bolshoi.

I have to say - I realised that some of it at least was not live - moving directly from Eleonora Sevenard's interview to the middle of her rehearsal with Rodkin, for example. I did not realise that the whole Bolshoi segment is taped in advance. It's a great pity.

The present format allows for all companies to tape and edit their segments in advance, and there are advantages to that. It's certainly less stressful to put something together over the course of a few days and then edit the scenes together (and the ballet company picks the days). Filming company class and rehearsals can still be "live" in the sense that it could all be filmed at one go, but it wouldn't necessarily have to be filmed on the actual WBD. The footage is broadcasted on WBD, that's the difference.

It's more exciting for the audience, I suppose, to try to link together the various companies with live streams during the same 24 hour period. There just doesn't seem to be enough money, organization and technological know how to pull that off (and then there's the Russians with their own issues). I get the sense that the Royal Ballet is doing most of the behind-the-scenes organization of the event (if anyone knows different, let us know). But it may be too much like herding cats to get all these individual ballet companies to organize their own video streaming teams to work together to make the single worldwide broadcast. It really needs to be done like the Olympics - where a single media service has exclusive rights to the broadcast (and can contract out to local regional offices).

Honestly, if I get to see an entire company class, and long rehearsal segments, with very little editing of the segments, I'm happy. The "live stream for 24 hours!" part is less important for me.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to organize 24 hours of moving target live "television" I do love the idea that somewhere, someone is always taking morning class, but it's also interesting to see what companies decide to feature in the pre-recorded sections. (a tiny plug for Pacific Northwest Ballet's video of their Dance for Parkinson's project!)
