  1. A great disappointment, Pherank. I'm hoping they still will do it in London as scheduled...
  2. There were 7 performances of Anima Animus scheduled for February and so, would need 2 casts of principal women (2 principal women in each cast). They need to be small and fast as the partnering is tour de force - both couples doing side by side bicycle lifts traveling across the stage and then repeated, Sofiane and one of the principal men do an over head press lift that is walked slowly offstage, etc. The first and last movements have all ten dancers on stage - moving quickly, interchanging partners - tricky choreography. With two of the four women out in February, SFB made the decision that there was not enough time to get another cast up and ready.

ABT: Roster in Review - 2018

For the record, Cirio danced most of the leading classical roles in Boston before coming to ABT. He and Misa Kuranaga were quite the couple, and often had rave reviews. I remember their beautiful performance in Vail of the pas from Ashton's Cinderella. Boston had just had a run of the ballet earlier in the year. I may be mistaken, but I do not think Wendy Somes allows too many people to perform that pas outside of the context of the full ballet. He also danced a number of principal roles while at ENB - Romeo, James in La Sylphide, Messenger of Death in Song of the Earth, and the Prince in The Nutcracker. It might be a little more than obvious why he's leaving. It is not unknown that Cornejo and Simkin waited a long time to dance some of the classical roles with ABT, and I would surmise that Cirio just did not want to wait. It is also common knowledge that he is active in choreography, and he made it clear in his instagram post that he wants to work with certain choreographers. I was aware (from his instagram) that he worked with several on the side while in NYC, and he will probably do the same in London. As we know, dancers do not limit themselves to what they do with their main company only, and Cirio certainly example of this with Cirio Collective. He's one of the most versatile dancers I've ever seen and I am baffled by thoughts that he's a "mismatch" for other US companies. Clearly I'm a fan. No disrespect intended.

ABT: Roster in Review - 2018

ABT seems to rely on a specific rep and isn't a company that is known for advancing new choreography. I think Cirio made a good decision for himself as not only is he a technically amazing dancer but also an artist and a choreographer.

    Afshin Mofid

The video of Afshin and Suzanne in "Faun" used to be up on YouTube - it's been removed and how I would love to see it again. It's the most beautiful ballet performance I've ever seen.

    New company members 2018-19 season

At PAB he seemed to be only interested in dancing classical work - not interested in the contemporary roles.
  7. agree its the mom, Rolando was one of the greats. I'm so fortunate to have seen many of his performances just after he defected.

    2018 Met Season

Abatt, well said. Not sure why Nanushka feels his rank "a joke"... He's a proven principal both at Boston and NYC and in galas and competitions internationally. It takes time at ABT - no matter who you are. Agree he will likely get more as the season progresses. He just got back from a fall season at ENB doing great stuff and found the time to choreograph the winning routine for this amazing couple (ice dancing 2018 European champions and headed to the Olympics) http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2017/10/25/259553222

    Fall 2017 Season

As for alternate opinions, Cirio was pretty well-known for classicism in Boston. In fact, he and Kuranaga were reviewed very well dancing Ashton's Cinderella. Following is a link to Ballet Tabs review (one of several positive reviews about the production) and one comment: http://dancetabs.com/2014/03/boston-ballet-cinderella-boston/ "Hence the company's premiere of Cinderella, Ashton's 1948 rendering of Prokofiev's score (which plays through this weekend only), arrived trailing an unspoken question: could Boston Ballet master yet another style? Well, the short answer is - yes, or at least its stars certainly can: Misa Kuranaga and Jeffrey Cirio (above), as the title heroine and her Prince Charming, looked as if they'd been dancing Ashton all their lives." Also, Wendy Somes (owner of Ashton's Cinderella) rarely allows dancers to use the Cinderella pas at outside guestings, but Cirio and Kuranaga were permitted to dance it at the Vail Int'l Dance Festival several years ago. It is a shame, but he has not been given opportunities at ABT to show that. Maybe that is the reason he is dancing at English National. He just finished dancing James in La Sylphide and is dancing MacMillan's Song of the Earth at Covent Garden next week. Reply Forward

    2016-17 season: Pennsylvania Ballet

That's the worst review I've ever seen written by Alastair. He's often tough but this is shocking.

    2016-17 season: Pennsylvania Ballet

Thank you, California, for your thoughtful report. The dancer who came forward in the bows after Neenan's ballet was Harrison Monaco - he is leaving to dance at Miami City Ballet - and was taking a final bow at the Academy.

    SFB 2017 - Program 8: Cinderella

Yes though a few had their early training at her studio - the local ones are Krista, Elizabeth and Madison. Several of the dancers on that list were pre-professional level when they worked with her and then were able to make the transition into a company. Julio had previously been in the National Ballet of Cuba and Alberto trained at Harid but was coached and performed with Magaly. I'm probably I'm leaving people out...

    SFB 2017 - Program 8: Cinderella

Magaly Suarez (Taras' mom) is an amazing teacher. In addition to the dancers listed above, there are many more of her dancers who have become professionals - here's a (partial) list: Alexandra Berman - Houston Ballet Julio Conception - Oklahoma Ballet Julia Conway - English National Ballet Krista Ettlinger - Dutch National Ballet Milenia Garcia - Oklahoma Ballet Elizabeth Mateer - San Francisco Ballet Madison McDonough - LA Ballet Grace Anne Powers - Ballet Met Serena Sovdsnes - Cincinnati Ballet Alberto Velazquez - Joffrey Ballet

    ABT 2016 Nutcracker Casting

Isn't Joseph Gorak partnering Sarah? Ratmansky's Nutcracker Grand Pas (not sure what they call it) ranks among the most difficult in the ballet rep and how is it possible for even one couple to get enough rehearsal to do that perfectly especially if they don't start rehearsing until Nov. 29? If Sarah is now dancing the pas with Jeff Cirio (Isabella's partner) - how does he get enough rehearsal to do those tricky parts with two different girls?
  20. CyberGhost vpn is working for me - I downloaded it (free) and it's unlimited viewing for 3 days - then the free version will limit you to 3 hours at a time. Once you download it, you need to add the concert.arte.tv/fr website to the list of available websites and then choose a server- I chose one in Paris. voila! NYCB performance begins at 2 pm eastern time.
  21. Ciro has won acclaim for principal roles in Boston, in London where he was nominated for a National Dance Award, in Helsinki, in Mongolia, in Japan and other U.S, places as well. He was chosen by Damian Woetzel to dance with both Isabella and Masha at Vale, he was chosen by Damian to dance at the Kennedy Center (with Lauren Lovette) to honor Patty McBride. so yes, Kevin probably does see something.
  22. He danced Colas (arguably more difficult than most male leading roles), Mercutio, Ali, Bluebird and leads in the rep programs. He received glowing reviews from New York critics. What is overstated is speculation that Jeffrey gave ABT an ultimatum.
  23. Congratulations Jeffrey! You are so deserving of this great honor and ABT is brilliant to have promoted you. I've known Jeffrey and watched his growth as an artist and a dancer for over a decade and besides his God given talent, he is the most modest and hardworking dancer I know. I'm saddened to think anyone would suspect him of saying "promote me of I'm walking"! His dancing is extraordinary and he takes wonderful care of his partners - the ABT ballerinas ask Kevin to dance with him. He has danced leading roles all season to great acclaim by the critics! Bravo Jeffrey! - oh and wait until you see his choreography!
  24. I noticed that too - where is the thread? It had so many informative posts!
