  1. What do you mean by "20th century dramatic works"? Surely Cranko, MacMillan, Neumeier fit that description, and they get a LOT of airtime.
  2. very sad news. Reported that she had a massive stroke yesterday and died not long ago. John Clifford just posted She is with Balanchine now. From Sharon Wagner: "It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that Violette Verdy, my dear friend for over 50 years and one of the world's leading ballerinas passed away this afternoon after suffering a stroke. She had joie de vivre and gave 100 percent to the dance world. Violette will be missed by everyone who knew her around the world."
  3. "envie de beaucoup de choses" does not mean "envy", it means "desire".
  4. the question being, of course, did he jump or was he pushed.
  5. I've posted the detailed schedule here http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2016/01/online-ballet-gala-january-31.html
  6. Why would POB be doing Ratmansky' s Beauty when La Scala is its European co-producer?
  7. I was puzzled by that too but we'll have to see. Unfortunately in Canada it conflicts with the Royal Ballet broadcast

  9. Presumably this will not happen when they take it to NY in July
  10. There is a Cinderella from the 60s with Sibley and Dowell (and Ashton himself as one of the stepsisters)
  11. Poor Naomi! To have come such a long way. Good luck with your return flight.
  12. Just for fun. I thought I'd share my "ballet title generator" based on your name. Are you Aurora's Winter Dreams of Spring? or Alice's Rodeo of Exactitude? Enjoy! http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2016/01/fun-ballet-title-generator.html
  13. They have five: Fille Ondine Sylvia Les Patineurs, Scenes de Ballet, Five Brahms Waltzes..., Voices of Spring, Devil's Holiday, Sleeping Beauty pdd, Thais pdd La Valse, Monotones 1 and II, Marguerite and Armand. That's not bad! I wouldn't be surprised if this latest cinema broadcast also goes to DVD.
  14. That's a very good point, sandik about cinemas not doing promotion. I hadn't thought of it, but it's true. Meanhwile I think that many dance companies see the cinema broadcasts as competition for their own product, rather than complementary or audience-building.
  15. it's official. All Friday and Saturday performances have been cancelled. http://www.kennedy-center.org/
  16. Well, now you can see it in New York in July instead (see my most recent post).
  17. New York Premiere of The Winter’s Tale The National Ballet of Canada at Lincoln Center Festival January 21, 2016… Artistic Director Karen Kain and Executive Director Barry Hughson of The National Ballet of Canada today announced the company’s return to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City. The National Ballet performs The Winter’s Tale as part of the Lincoln Center Festival, July 28 — 31, 2016. This engagement is the company’s first appearance at the festival and the second tour to Lincoln Center in two years having last performed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland there in 2014. The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, led by Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin, performs with the company on this tour. With over 60 members, the orchestra has performed in each of the National Ballet’s seasons since 1951 and has toured with the company extensively through Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Hailed as “a major artistic achievement” by Toronto Star and “a triumph” by The Telegraph, The Winter’s Tale premiered in London at the Royal Opera House in April 2014 and in Toronto at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in November 2015. It is currently onstage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. from January 19 until January 24, 2016. Co-produced with The Royal Ballet, The Winter’s Tale is choreographed by the renowned British choreographer and Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon. The production reunites the creative team behind Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with sets and costumes by Bob Crowley, an original score by Joby Talbot and lighting by Natasha Katz. Based on the play by William Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale is a story of loss and redemption and a meditation on love, jealousy and the nature of family. Ticket Information Lincoln Center Festival packages go on sale on January 21 to Friends of Lincoln Center and to the general public on January 28. 18. In Toronto, the NBOC has a policy of never cancelling shows for inclement weather. But that's Toronto.
  19. NBOC never did stage Tempest. I think Karen Kain saw it and decided against it. I thought Winter's Tale was fabulous, all 3 acts of it, and it was very well received in Toronto. I certainly wouldn't call it the "lesser of two disappointments". How on earth can any of us presume to say what now-dead critics would think of it?
  20. They will be announcing this year's program on May 2. For more info about the Saint-Sauveur experience: http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2011/08/festival-des-arts-de-saint-sauveur.html
