  4. Paul Taylor Creative Domain A new documentary film OPENS SEPTEMBER 23rd at Tickets on Sale Now Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Opening in Theaters across the US (see page 2 & 3) We’re shown what the camera has seldom been able to record: a great choreographer at work on a new piece… Alastair Macaulay The New York Times Paul Taylor: Creative Domain is a rare documentation of the creative process of one of the most acclaimed choreographers in American history. We follow Mr. Taylor making “Three Dubious Memories,” his 133rd dance -- a Rashomon-inspired exploration of memory, involving three people entangled in a relationship. We witness the work ethic that has created some of the most iconic dances of our time. Theater http://www.mfa.org/programs/film/paul-taylor-creative-domain Trailer https://vimeo.com/37539696 Like us - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PaulTaylorCreativeDomain Website http://www.paultaylorcreativedomain.com/ "I loved Creative Domain because it is of an older Paul Taylor and you can see him still young in his work, and how he connects to his dancers and fills space and thinks about movement and making dances. What drives him. Where it drives him. When it drives him. You sort of fall in love with his dancers... they become individual. You catch 'process' and 'creation.' Not easy to do. " Sasha Anawalt Director, Arts Journalism Masters Program USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism "The film quickens memories in anyone who has ever danced professionally. 'Yes,' we say to ourselves, 'that’s how it felt, that’s how we coped; remember that kind of sweat?' For the uninitiated, the interplay of labor and inspiration may come as a surprise. A dance gets hammered out, made to fit, and polished to beauty like a shoe made by a master cobbler.” Deborah Jowitt, Arts Journal "This is so much more than a film about a master of modern dance. It is about finding and engaging in the thing that fuels you..." 8. I don't understand why these visiting companies always bring Balanchine. I know they want to prove that they can do it too, but surely people in NY have seen “Stravinsky Violin Concerto,” “Prodigal Son” and “Square Dance,” plenty and would like to see something else?

apparently they do have oxygen backstage (VIDF posted a pic of the tanks on their instagram). also I noticed my hotel in Vail had a whole page of instructions on preventing altitude sickness. I am sure the Vail people do not overlook telling their dancers about it. Coming from Toronto, I certainly noticed that I was short of breath and my heart was pounding on the slightest uphill walk (and this despite the fact that I walk and bike a lot at home). I was amazed that the dancers could leap about energetically apparently without effort, as if they were back home at sea level in NYC.

Mearns came down with altitude sickness in Vail on the weekend.
  11. I also saw her in The Lesson and was very impressed.
  12. I have seen Ida in the Bournonville rep (Flower Festival, Napoli pas de six) where she is absolutely delightful. I also saw her at the Erik Bruhn competition in Toronto, which she won, at the tender age of 19. She is a beautiful dancer, still very young, and I'm sure the shortcomings you've noted will be erased with time and experience.
  13. Actually I doubt Toronto is any colder than Saratoga in November. For travelling, I think you're much less likely to run into problems (ie delays because of snow) in mid November going to Toronto than January going to DC. If you like Ratmansky you could come for the tail end of the Winter's Tale run on Sun 22 November and stay for the opening of R&J on Wed. 25. (Having said that, total disclosure, I am not a big fan of Ratmansky's R&J). I think our company will do a very good job of Winter's Tale (it;s their first time doing this ballet, but Christopher Wheeldon has often said how much he admires how the NBOC performs his work). And the tix for you (plus hotels, meals) will be a huge bargain compared to the Royal Opera House at the current exchange rate (Cdn$ is worth less than 80 cents US and not likely to increase). For that matter, everything will be a bargain compared to Washington DC as well. Unfortunately they don't announce casting till a couple of weeks before, but if you wanted to wait till then you would still be likely to get a good ticket. PLUS.. if you come to Toronto you and I could get together for tea or something. How could you resist THAT??
  14. Hi rkoretzky, did you mean me? Yes, the NBOC is at KC in January with Winter's Tale. Or you could come to Toronto to see it in November (I have no idea where you live).
  15. If you're in the UK at the end of May, it might also be worth a sidetrip to Edinburgh to see David Dawson's new Swan Lake for Scottish Ballet. I saw his Giselle in Dresden and loved it. It will not be a traditional Swan Lake.

I understand also that the stages are very hard in Japan, so probably not the best thing to make one's comeback from an injury.
  19. Pretty amazing but apparently true! « Full registration fee » (for 3 days) Includes all oral sessions, round table discussion, all paper documentation (including the conference and the Bordeaux national opera programme), morning and afternoon break refreshments, opening reception, guided tour of the Grand Théâtre, screening, Ballet performance. Registration before 8th September: 45 € Registration between 8th Septembrer and 10th October: 60 € I suspect heavy government subsidy. wish I could go myself!
  20. plus I imagine there will be wine, it being in Bordeaux, and that always "improves" one's second-language skills ;-)
  21. well, I suspect the majority of the symposium will be in French, seeing as it's held in France. Why wouldn't it be? But here's your answer (from the French page): Les débats se dérouleront dans trois langues officielles, le français, le russe et l'anglais et seront intégralement traduits. ie. they will be interpreted in full.
  22. I agree with everything you said, volcano. Sunday afternoons are also better for ballet students and teachers. Also it's great that the RB is back with cineplex, because they have way more theatres across the country. Now if only ballet lovers would support the initiative in droves.
  23. Cineplex is once again showing both companies' performances in Canada. Info on dates here: http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2015/07/royal-ballet-and-bolshoi-ballet.html
  24. also Marijn Rademaker left Stuttgart for Dutch National only last Christmas, so it's very conceivable he was asked to send in his bio for this gala before that.
