  1. I saw the two of them dance this pdd at Vail itself last year and it was spellbinding. Exquisite.
  2. can you summarize for those of us who are stuck behind the NYT paywall?

  5. I agree, but just to point out that there is nothing dishonourable about a "matinee performance at the end of the run" at the NBOC. Sunday matinees have long been the best sold performances in Toronto, and we often get first cast on Sunday mat. The problem is giving McKie and Lunkina only one performance, and furthermore that it conflicts with Lunkina in Bright Stream at the cinema (which is on Nov 27 in Canada)
  6. I went to a Nutcracker in April or May in Vienna a few years ago. Also, Berlin State Ballet has just premiered Nacho Duato's Nutcracker, mid-October. In Europe, Nutcracker's stranglehold on Christmas is much newer than in North America.
  7. NYCB has just informed me that the new Lopez Ochoa piece Unframed will be replaced by After the Rain pas de deux on Saturday afternoon.
  8. Wendy Perron interviews the author Simon Morrison http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2016/10/bolshoi-confidential-book-signing-this.html
  9. http://milano.repubblica.it/cronaca/2016/10/08/news/scala_mauro_bigonzetti_rinuncia_alla_direzione_del_corpo_di_ballo_mal_di_schiena_-149360217/ according to the theatre, it is because severe back problems prevent him from any effort. The Managing Director of La Scala, Alexander Pereira, has appointed Fréderic Olivieri, currently head of the theatre’s dance academy, to fill the post until February of next year. A replacement choreographer for Bigonzetti's new Coppelia will be announced shortly.

  12. I find it doesn't engage one emotionally. The swan choreography is quite awkward. Rothbart is fairly ridiculous and the final fight between him and Siegfried is quite laughable. The only part I really like is the four princess's (ie Siegfried's potential brides) dances. Naomi and volcanohunter can probably weigh in with more thoughts.
  13. I would like that too, gravitysalad! I always keep my eyes peeled for the Neumeier Swan Lake when planning my trips. I would also not recommend the Kudelka Swan Lake (and unfortunately since I live in Toronto, that's the one I get...). I don't agree that the ballet is misogynistic in itself though. It portrays a misogynistic society.
  14. I really liked Milan and didn't find it terribly expensive. It can be hard to get good tickets though. And you have to be sure you're not there during one of their fashion weeks, when hotels really are expensive.
  15. I like Cranko's which you can only see in Stuttgart. I also love Neumeier's version but it wouldn't fit your requisite of "relatively traditional 2nd and 4th acts".
  16. I really enjoyed the Binet piece at the Art Gallery and so did everyone else I talked to. I certainly didn't get the impression that the audience was "confused". I am puzzled by comments about applause at the end being a negative thing. Applause is a standard reaction to a performance, no? The performance was in a kind of continuous loop of 45-minute segments that were repeated. You could arrive at 6 pm and see it three times or over, or come later and see as much or as little of it as you liked. I stayed for almost three full iterations. After over 2 hours of non-stop dancing I think the dancers deserved their bow. I really don't think that Binet's work is "generally considered mediocre at best". And he's young (only 25). If choreographers aren't given a chance when they're young how will they ever become masters (or mistresses) of their craft?
  17. I think press release writers think that PST or CST or whatever means "Pacific Time" or "Central Time" and don't think about what the S means. The same problem happened with the Joffrey Ballet re their stream of Wheeldon Nut rehearsals. They said CST but they meant (without knowing it) CDT.
  18. wow Helene and volcanohunter, thanks for all the work you put into figuring this out and explaining it. Cuz it really wasn't intuitive!
  19. I tried doing this too but it doesn't seem to "stick".
  20. 21. Amazing. Someone just sent me this flyer from 1974 advertising the performances at which Baryshnikov defected. Look at the ticket prices! Minimum wage in Ontario in 1974 was $2 an hour. So you could work for 6 hrs at a minimum wage job and get the best seats to the ballet. Today you would have to work about 20 hours.
  22. the irony being that according to someone at the festival, attendance at Stuttgart Ballet averages about 93%, and the company can stage an evening of 3 world premieres and it will sell out. Reid Anderson can program things that could (and elsewhere would) result in half-empty houses and not worry about it.
  23. the local TV station in Stuttgart is streaming their brand new documentary on their website. It is in German but has some great footage. It is visible from North America. http://swrmediathek.de/player.htm?show=fa0e44c0-4d8f-11e6-a659-0026b975e0ea
