carbro
I was assuming that Carla Korbes would be dancing Helena (she isn't), but I was hoping and praying that she'd reprise that glorious Titania which she did -- what? four? -- years ago. I now wonder if I'll ever see that again. On the other hand, I am hopeful that Tess Reichlen will, before long, make her own mark on Titania! Merde, Tess! [Editing to note] Hah! I put the casting up, and I misread it! Reichlen is doing Hippolyta. I saw her in it last year, and she wears it very well, indeed! Edited June 15, 2005 by carbro Link to comment
Helene
It looks like Principal casting for Titania this season, with Kowroski, Nichols, and Kistler reprising the role and Sylve making her debut. No newbies or up-and-comers this time around. Link to comment
pville
Sigh, I was hoping Carla Korbes would get SOMETHING as well, even if it couldn't be Titania. I'm worry she will waste away as a soloist. As for MSND I suppose it depends on if Darci is up to dancing ... I think when she danced it before it was when Kistler pulled out. I guess we'll have an idea this week with Morgen, Korbes or Kistler is a pretty good deal. And here's to hoping Somogyi will be well enough to dance Hippolyta. Link to comment
carbro
From the NYST Lobby Some of the TBAs have turned out to be very interesting. Two new Hippolytas: Ellen Bar, on Wednesday and Sat. Mat.; Ana Sophia Scheller, Thursday and Sunday. Pascale vanKipnis is back as Hermia on Thursday and Sunday. Link to comment

She is the most lyrical of all the Principals and her beautiful arm movements unique to her lovely style. Link to comment

AmandaNYC
The NYCB site was updated yesterday to show that the TBA for Butterfly will now be danced by Hyltin, making her debut in the role. And, yup, the site indicates it's a role debut for Carmena. -amanda Link to comment

carbro
I look forward to your reactions, nysusan! And, of course, yours, too, BW. Where else can you see a queen slumber in the protective curl of a rose petal? Link to comment
oberon
BW, nysusan & amanda: Balanchine's MIDSUMMER is a great way to end the ballet season and kick off your Summer. Hope you enjoy it, and please do write your impressions here! Oberon (that's how I got this name!...yeah, like I could dance that Scherzo ) Link to comment
BW
So true Oberon! I've seen Midsummer's before - just been going through a hiatus with ballet - but I agree it's a great beginning for summer and a return to things ballet. And Gia Kourlas seems to feel the same way when she writes about it in her article in today's NY Times: Star-Crossed Lovers Magically Untangled In New York City, summer cannot really officially begin without two outlandish events. One is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, in which an assortment of loony sea creatures, ruled by King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, descend upon the Brooklyn boardwalk. But the other one offers a more magical adventure. In George Balanchine's indelible "Midsummer Night's Dream," Titania and Oberon, Queen and King of the Fairies, inhabit a beautiful world where butterflies frolic with fairies, and mortals and immortals try to make sense of love... After all, it does continue across the plaza at the Met…see you there? Link to comment

oberon
I agree the season is not over, but I don't enjoy watching ballet at the Met. I have sat in every conceivable part of the house and just feel the dancers are so FAR AWAY...even in orchestra front. I do go to ABT because I have a good friend who dances with them and I try to support him when he's onstage. But other than that, and despite Julie Kent & Marcelo Gomes, I hardly ever get to the ballet once NYCB ends its Spring season. Link to comment

I know what you mean about the Met - it’s cavernous! Last year I decided to splurge & go for 1st row Grand Tier seats for a couple of performances and I felt like I was miles from the stage. I usually go for the boxes about half way up the side...I’ve sat as far up as the dress circle boxes & it’s been fine. This year I have tickets for one performance in a balcony box. We’ll see how it goes... Link to comment
