Flash mob does Verdi
diane replied to Ray's topic in Other Performing & Fine Arts: Performances, Exhibits, Films, and Events
Love it! There is something so stirring about many voices singing such rousing melodies. thanks for posting. (one question, though: does anyone know if there was someone leading them, or how did they all stay together so well in all the noise of the market?) -d- -
Irregular time signatures in ballet
diane replied to cubanmiamiboy's topic in Ballet History and Music
That is a very interesting bit of info, Mr. Johnson. When I was a dancer, I always loved the chance to dance to things which were not so "common"; and I try to incorporate irregular time signatures in my classes when I can. 'Probably just takes hearing again and again to get used to it. Good point about the choreography, carbro. ;) If I am not mistaken, in other cultures what we call "irregular" times are much more common. -d- -
Ashley Bouder Makes The Front Page of the NY Times
diane replied to abatt's topic in New York City Ballet
(quoting above quote...) wow. What a waste of resources. -d- -
Yes, I am right there with you. Also, "older" folks sure don't appear as old as they used to. -d-

Hey, I can understand how one could leave their heart in Vienna. It is also my second home. You are right about the situation for dancers being very hard right now - and actually for everyone, but it appears (in Europe anyway) esp. for such "expendable" things as arts and theatre! Good luck!! -d-

I would have thought of "deterrent" more along the lines of "calming the wild animals", as in the Magic Flute. But, oh, well. -sigh- I have found that esp. little kids are calmed when played classical music - often just in the background - as opposed to anything else, such as radio-show-with-commercials-and-other-stuff. It never ever occured to me that someone was really trying to make certain groups of people _go away_ by playing certain music! I suppose then.. that in some boutiques my patronage is not wanted. ;) -d-

First time at the ballet for young children
diane replied to Estelle's topic in Everything Else Ballet
I have taken my kids to see theater since they were very young - not yet walking - so they got used to the "dos and don'ts" from the start. (their dad is a theater actor, so they were there a lot; also went to concerts, operettas, etc.) Their first ballet was a video of Nutcracker, though, as the theater in our town at the time did not have a suitable ballet right then. They loved that video - esp. because there were children dancing and they also liked the "dolls", and I told them the story. Another one they enjoyed was a video of Sleeping Beauty - but only the beginning with the fairies bringing gifts and then Carabosse. For us, the introduction via video was ideal at the time. If one lives in an area where there are good productions to see live, then that would be great. -d- -
hey, that is really interesting! I had never heard about that before, Cristian! Thanks for telling! We (two DDs and husband) had a small party with some young friends and walzed to the blue-danube-walz at midnight. (my family here is Austrian -so that is tradition!) Wishing all of you a really good, healthy and happy new year! I am so glad to be able to come here to find people who have similar interests. Thank you. -d-

If the dancer sat on the partner's hand up in the air, we used to just call that a "seat lift". It is o.ik. to do (not horribly difficult) if both know what they are doing and they are coordinated with and trust each other. -d-

Yes, it is lovely. She appears to know why she is doing what she is doing. The economy, the focus. Makes it very graceful and pleasing. -d-

Thanks! That was very interesting. I was amazed at how much the company has to spend on shoes. -d-

Thanks! That was very nice! -d-

Sorry, I cannot help you further. You may have to go there and see for yourself. ;) -d-

no, they do not have videos up. there are head-shots of the dancers. Why do you need videos? -d-

Here is a link to their website, with a list of what they are doing this season. http://www.theaterwuerzburg.de/start.php?cnt=2⊂=3 A quick look at the dancers' bios shows that they are all pretty much classicallly trained, though that is very common even in modern companies. More I do not know. -d-

I am very surprised and sorry to read this. I had wondered what had become of him. I do hope his friends and family find peace and comfort somehow. -d-

I am in the process of reading this right now and thoroughly enjoying it! (Ms. Kelly was one of my teachers; many memories come back while reading! ) When I was there Marie Rambert was no longer teaching; but she was a presence and a strong one at that, though she was not even at the school very often. I can see now that some of the "styles" of teaching - and who gets taught and who is "left to their own devices", goes back to Marie Rambert and _her_ way of going about it all. Ms. Kelly's book also puts to paper the stories we had all only heard about. -d-

now THAT has been removed, too, apparently. :/ Quite annoying, to say the least. Many of us will never be able to see many of these ballets or dancers. I sure did enjoy those videos whilst they were there. I would write to those addresses named. What to say? Just - "reinstate ketinoa's videos, please!"? Or is there some certain thing one has to say - as in court. ;) -d-

The ultimate insult for rugby players: "Take up Ballet"

Disney Attempts to Trademark Princess Aurora
diane replied to Fleegull's topic in Ballet News & Issues
Thank you for the clarification. So... what does that mean for anyone in a future time staging a ballet about sleeping beauty, when disney supposedly has this trademark on "princess aurora"? -d- -
I did see them on that tour. I was a child at the time, and since my father had (very briefly) known Nureyev shortly after his defection when he was in Tokyo, I was able to go backstage and meet both of them. I remember being surprised at how roughh the stage floor looked and also at how small the dancers were. -d-
