  1. The day-by-day program is posted here: http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2013/12/san-francisco-ballet-tours-to-paris.html
  2. tapfan, you might want to check out the National Ballet of Canada's headshots: Tanya Howard, first soloist: http://national.ballet.ca/thecompany/firstsoloists/ Jenna Savella, second soloist: http://national.ballet.ca/thecompany/secondsoloists/ Adji Cissoko, corps de ballet: http://national.ballet.ca/thecompany/corps/
  3. Yes she has joined Dutch National Ballet's Junior Company
  4. I notice that Joffrey is conspicuous by its absence from this page announcing the Auditorium Theatre's 2014-15 season: http://www.auditoriumtheatre.org/pages/home/performances-events/125.php Does anyone know if this is just an oversight (a pretty large one!), or if Joffrey will be in the "Much More to Come!", or should more be read into it?
  5. My understanding generally speaking is that presenters don't like ballet companies announcing their engagements before the presenter does. So this was true, for instance, for the National Ballet of Canada when they went to LA and to the Kennedy Center. The NBOC knew, of course, that they would be on tour but they didn't post it on their website till the presenters had done so. As abatt pointed out, LCFestival doesn't announce its lineup till March. This would not explain, however, why Saratoga has disappeared from the Bolshoi site.
  6. does that say 4410 yen, Naomi? Or about $44? That's pretty pricy by N American DVD standards. However, maybe I will pick one up when I am in Tokyo in February!
  7. Yes that is correct. Do you have a link to official info about the Royal B tour?
  8. They won't bring Alice, as National Ballet of Canada has North American rights to it.
  9. Latest twist in the saga: Asylmuratova is back! (Google-translated from gazeta.ru http://www.gazeta.ru/culture/news/2013/11/05/n_3303445.shtml Tsiskaridze extended the contract with the artistic director of the Vaganova Academy Altynay Asylmuratova 05.11.2013, 13:56 | « BBC » Acting Rector of the Academy of Russian Ballet . St. Petersburg Vaganova Tsiskaridze signed a contract with the artistic director of the Academy Altynay Asylmuratova the extension of a school , reports RIA " Novosti". In a statement Tsiskaridze adds that such a personnel decision was made "for the sake of continuity of the educational process ." Tsiskaridze was appointed rector of the Vaganova Academy in late October , at the same time it was announced that artistic director of the Academy to be a ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina Mariinsky Theatre . According to the explanations of the Ministry of Culture , the candidate Lopatkina was only recommended , and the decision to appoint her to the post remains for the rector. Election of the Rector of the Academy to be held in the near future . The teaching staff of the Academy of Russian Ballet . Vaganova , as well as artists of the Mariinsky Ballet wrote an open letter to reconsider the decision to appoint new leaders Nikolai Tsiskaridze and Ulyana Lopatkina . The letter notes that the voluntary , but the unexpected departure of well-deserved rest rector of Faith Dorofeeva and artistic director of the Academy of Altynay Asylmuratova " irreparable damage to all the administrative and creativity institutions, interrupts the continuity of traditions and schools is unacceptable , if not criminal decision." " Please leave the teachers at the academy Altynay Abduahimovnu heard in the early days of my work. I heard it . But the main reason for her appointment - continuity and continuity of the educational process. All other rectors also continue to perform their duties , "- said in a statement Tsiskaridze . The Ministry of Culture confirmed that the agreement with Asylmuratova was extended in full, it is the artistic director and provost at the Vaganova Academy.
  10. on the other hand, American companies (ABT, PNB, SFB, Boston, Houston, Pennsylvania) have been renting NBOC productions for years: Onegin (previous production and new production), Merry Widow, The Dream, La Fille mal Gardee, Cranko R&J, Kudelka Cinderella, Taming of the Shrew, etc etc. Also I believe Kudelka's Firebird was a co-pro with Houston.
  11. I agree and would add that just the name "Bolshoi" sells--well known stars or not. But I'm not sure about Spartacus not being an audience favorite--For many people (and I should think especially the Russian audience in New York) Spartacus "is" the Bolshoi. Perhaps that's an outdated notion?? From the amount of Russian I heard in the audience at the recent live broadcast of the Bolshoi's Spartacus in Toronto (which was much better attended than the Royal B's Don Q) I deduce that is pretty accurate.
  12. Judging by the sold-out houses for Alice in LA, there are a lot of people who DO want to see Alice, and the presenters are eager to have it. Saratoga wanted it but it couldn't be put on their stage. Toronto's only an hour from NY by air; people could come and see NBOC here. (I want to put a smiley in here but for some reason the smiley menu is greyed out.)
  13. I don't know anything about the interior processes at the school, but looking from the outside I would think a nicer way would have been for her to make her own decision about when/how to retire. I agree! Especially since she's ONLY 52!!!
  14. Oh, I'm sorry to hear this -- I think they should bring a wider variety of work. easier said than done. Alice is an enormous production to ship and therefore expensive. So is Romeo. Also, it's not always up to the company. The presenter often specifies what program they want.
  15. good news from Ellen Bar: "we've reached our minimum goal of $20,000 and we will able to finish post production! We've got 19 days left and every dollar donated towards our total goal will help us master the film, license rights for every type of distribution, and compensate the amazing artists involved."
  16. I don't believe they have plans to bring anything other than Alice.
  17. No 'El Cheapo' here!!! Speaking of El Cheapo...I read elsewhere that Ratmansky's Cinderella was restaged for the Australian Ballet a couple of months ago with all-new, far more luxurious (than Mariinsky) sets/costumes. Smart Aussies refused to take the flimsy scaffolding from St Petersburg! restaged and largely rechoreographed too, I understand.
  18. Ellen Bar and her team are seeking crowdfunding for post-production costs of a feature-length documentary. They will receive a $10,000 matching grant from the Jerome Robbins Foundation if they can raise $20,000. Here is an email that Ellen Bar just sent out: If you're receiving this email, it's because you're a fan of our film NY EXPORT: OPUS JAZZ, or a friend of the team behind it. Since that film premiered, many of you have asked - what's next? We're excited to tell you that we have a new project, BALLET 422 - and we need your help to get it across the finish line! BALLET 422 is a feature length documentary that follows the creation of a single new ballet from first rehearsal to world premiere at New York City Ballet. With unprecedented backstage access, this totally observational (no talking heads!) documentary focuses on the creative process as young NYCB dancer and emerging choreographer Justin Peck works with costume designers, conductors, musicians, lighting designers and his fellow dancers to bring his vision to the stage. This is the first time this process has ever been captured in its entirety at New York City Ballet. Our incredible filmmaking team includes many key collaborators from OPUS JAZZ - director/cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes, producers Ellen Bar and Anna Rose Holmer - and the new addition of our amazing editor Saela Davis and talented cinematographer Nick Bentgen. We need to raise a minimum of $20,000 to meet our post production needs. We hope you will help us by donating, or spreading the word to your social networks, or both. Here's the link to see our project page with a 2 minute teaser on Hatchfund, a crowdfunding site where every gift is tax-deductible. http://www.hatchfund.org/project/ballet_422?utm_source=BALLET+422+First+Email&utm_campaign=Ballet+422+first+email&utm_medium=email
  19. The NBOC very rarely sold out (or anywhere near it) its former venue, except for Nutcracker, and it rarely sells out the Four Seasons Centre (except for Nutcracker and things like Cinderella, Alice, etc.). For most programs, it offers the same 7 performances it always did. They made up for lost revenue in the orchestra seats by upping the ticket prices significantly.
  20. In the ongoing saga, Graham Spicer reports that Vladimir Urin has caved to pressure and is giving Nikolai Tsiskaridze a farewell performance at the Bolshoi in Nutcracker on New Year's Eve. http://www.gramilano.com/2013/09/ex-bolshoi-star-tsiskaridze-returns-dance-nutcracker-new-years-eve/

  22. Yes, she is listed as a member of DNB's new junior company on their website.
