  1. Misty Copeland in Conversation With Chloe Malle, Social Editor at Vogue Magazine Author Event Picture a ballerina in a tutu and toe shoes. What does she look like? As the only African-American soloist dancing with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland's story is one of passion, grace and drive. Tuesday March 11, 2014 7:30 PM Barnes & Noble 86th & Lexington Ave 150 East 86th Street, New York, NY 10028, 212-369-2180 http://store-locator.barnesandnoble.com/author-events/Misty-Copeland/50324989
  2. Five copies of Cathy Marie Buchanan's historical novel based on the life of the dancer who posed for Degas's "Little Dancer" statue, The Painted Girls, are being given away this Friday. You can follow this link to register for the contest and for more info about the book: http://www.freebookfriday.com/2014/02/the-painted-girls-by-cathy-marie-buchanan.html It's also available on amazon. I enjoyed this book, and would be interested to hear other people's thoughts on it.
  3. The CBS Sherlock Holmes drama (on Global in Canada), starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu has a ballet-themed story this week: Holmes' latest investigation takes him inside a professional dance company when an up-and-coming ballerina is murdered. Meanwhile, Watson embarks on a solo enquiry to find a homeless veteran when his friend alleges he was abducted, Here's a preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNfve573Aco&feature=share Airs Thursday 6 February at 10. Available online the next day: http://www.globaltv.com/elementary/ http://www.cbs.com/shows/elementary/
  4. It was quite well attended in downtown Toronto. Not as many as for Giselle, but about the same as for Jewels, maybe 80 people in the cinema I was in.
  5. Who else saw the broadcast? I loved the ballet. I thought Lantratov and Vishneva were fabulous (the former especially in those wonderful solos). I also liked the costume and set designs.
  6. Toronto photographer Karolina Kuras has embarked on a project she describes thus: 52 weeks, 52 shoots, 52 dancers, and endless possibility. I'm excited (and a bit terrified) to have started this project already. My first shoot was last week with the incredible Dylan Tedaldi. I can't wait to meet all of the amazing and talented dancers I'll be working with and see where this road will go:) https://www.facebook.com/karolina.kuras
  7. Welcome, Sasha, and in case you haven't realized it yet, the Paris Opera Ballet's "Crystal Palace" is Symphony in C by another (its first) name. Lucky you to be so well located to see so much ballet. The company in Dresden, which is not far from Prague, also has a good reputation.
  8. I have no inside info about BSJ! I just read an article online from the San Jose newspaper. (It was of particular interest to me because I'm planning to take a group to the Bay area in May, and as luck would have it, a BSJ Saturday matinee was part of the program.... )
  9. BSJ has cancelled its Saturday matinee performances this season..
  10. I've posted synopses of the novel and the ballet here: http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2014/01/alexei-ratmanskys-lost-illusions.html
  11. Alina Cojocaru performs 3 of the 4 shows. Full casting is here (sorry, coudln't get it to paste) http://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwdance/article/Casting-Announced-for-The-Hamburg-Balletts-LILIOM-at-Segerstrom-Center-27-9-20140107

  13. Thanks Ashley! They are pretty fantastic, I'm getting very excited about heading off to Copenhagen and Hamburg in March.
  14. Hello Ashley, and welcome.
  15. Not knowing where you are in relation to Bellingham, of course, but just wondering whether British Columbia might be closer. http://www.cineplex.com/Showtimes/jewels-bolshoi-ballet-live-frce-dance/vancouver-bc?Date=1/19/2014
  16. If you're going to throw, my advice is: stems first. It's more aerodynamic that way. If you throw them blooms first there's too much wind resistance. I have thrown many bouquets in my time!
  17. From Pointe Magazine: This Sunday at 1:30 pm, New York's WNET/13 will air Steven Caras: See Them Dance. The beautiful documentary follows the life of Caras, a former New York City Ballet dancer who went on to become a gifted dance photographer. It includes interviews with the likes of Peter Martins, Mia Michaels, Jacques d'Amboise and Allegra Kent, among others. And, of course, there's plenty of Caras' gorgeous photographycaptivating images of stars like Mikhail Baryshnikov, Suzanne Farrell, Rudolf Nureyev and Natalia Makarova.
  18. Bizarrely, the Kennedy Center website also refers to Hilarion as "Hans". Also, it says it's staged by Grigorovich (as does this thread), but the credits for the production on the Bolshoi website don't mention Grigorovich anywhere: Libretto by Theophile Gautier and Jean-Henry Saint-Georges Production: Vladimir Vasiliev Choreography: Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot, Mauris Petipa, Alexander Gorsky, Leonid Lavrovsky, Vladimir Vasiliev Set Designer: Sergei Barkhin Costume Designer: Hubert de Givanchi Philippe Venet participating Music Director: Algis Zhuraytis Adviser: Galina Ulanova Lighting Designer: Mikhail Sokolov (How ironic is it that the Bolshoi misspells Petipa's first name???!!!)
  19. According to the Kennedy Center's own website, opening night is to be danced by someone called Svetlana Makharova [sic]!
  20. I happened to email Cineplex here in Canada with this very question a couple of days ago, and their reply was: "Hi Katherine, We are hearing of a program change as well. I’m awaiting news from the Bolshoi on this officially. The date will remain." As soon as I hear back from them I will post.
  21. I think there is another thread somewhere about this but darned if I can find it. Anyway, the producers have just posted a trailer: http://youtu.be/yKlzD3YFEAw The credits say it is sponsored by PBS and WNET and American Masters. Does anyone know when it's supposed to air?
  22. Why don't you call Ticket Services directly and discuss your situation - they seem to be fairly flexible on exchanges. This links to some trio packages (elsewhere there's a warning about "demand based priciing" - don't know when that kicks in) http://www.sfballet.org/tickets/packages/customize I'll have to keep an eye on Thursdays. Wednesday's curtain is earlier, so I think there are more commuters that night – and there are often Green Room interviews/lectures Weds before the performance. Re demand-based pricing, it seems to kick in whenever. For instance I was in SF last April for two mixed programs, the price of which was the same on the day of the performance as it had been when tickets went on sale the previous November. But by that time, ticket prices for Cinderella, which was still 4 weeks in the future, and was already almost sold out, had doubled (yes, doubled!).
  23. does NYCB often make program changes like that? it seems a little odd to me to advertise one program and let people buy tickets for it and then change it to something (almost) completely different.
