  1. I thought I recalled reading that Curry was getting married to an Australian.

    Misty Copeland

Misty has been named as one of Crain New York's 40 under 40 class of 2015. http://www.crainsnewyork.com/40under40/Copeland
  3. I also enjoyed the program very much. It's a masterpiece. I've been lucky enough to see it live several times, but I felt like I could see even more detail in the taped version. I wish they had put the text at the bottom of the screen, or at least a download of the text on the PBS website for those who wanted it. Always true to himself, Morris did not alter from his usual wardrobe choices for the taping. At the end of the show, in his usual manner, he took his bows in an ill fitting T-shirt and orange crocs. I found the dedication of the program to Gerard Mortier very touching and appropriate. Mortier ran the Brussels La Monnaie at the time that Morris' L'Allegro premiered there in the late 80s. Mortier and Morris -two visionary artists.
  4. I saw the program info for next season in the Links section. The programs seem so interesting and excellent I may have to hop an Amtrak to Philadelphia to see the company.

    2015 US Tour

The people at the Koch box office are very rigid in connection with any exchanges for companies other than NYCB. I've experienced it first hand in reference to ABT and Paul Taylor. For the ABT engagement at the Koch last year, I wanted to exchange my single tix for two seats together at the same performance, same price level. No, not allowed. We had to sit separately.
  6. I've seen MacMillan's Anastasia. It was awful, and Russians should consider themselves lucky if it's never performed there.
  7. If MIsty gets good reviews in the NY press, McKenzie will cast her every year in SL. In fact, even if she gets so-so reviews, I suspect she will become a regular in the casting.
  8. Gillian has picked up all of Julie Kent's assignments. Murphy is dancing Cinderella again tonight, after having danced it on Thursday night, and after having danced in Pillar on Tues and Wed. She's definitely earning her pay this week. That's the danger of relying on a reduced number of principals for tour engagements.
  9. In fairness, Misty likely has no say or imput into the prices charged by WB. It is ironic, as you stated. I have every expectation that ABT will raise the "dynamic price" of her SL and RJ performance soon enough.
  10. I can't imagine spending that kind of money to see a regional company perform any ballet.

    Olga Smirnova

I'm concerned that they will stick Hee Seo into Smirnova's spot (move her from Gamzatti to Nikiya), as she is scheduled to dance both roles that week anyway.

I had no idea that Obratsova hadn't done SL at the Bolshoi. Wonder why. Would love to see more Obratsova in NYC. Bring it on!

I also think that Smirnova will not be able to appear for her Bayadere at ABT. However, I wouldn't assume that Obratsova would be available to take her place. Bolshoi is doing several Swan Lakes during the time period of Bayadere, and they may need Obratsova at her home company. I hope I'm wrong. We'll have to wait and see.

Hmm. I might consider paying that to see Lopatkina, but Misty?
  15. Wait. BAck up. Simkin is a red head now?!
  16. I wish they would put up the full casting info for SB, such as Lilac, Bluebird, Florine.

Paul Taylor created a work for ABT (I forget the name of it now) but he created it on his own company first in the studio and then had someone teach it to the ABT dancers, as he does not like to create works on any dancers other than those in his own company. Thus, it premiered at ABT with ABT dancers, but it was not created on ABT's dancers.I think it is a fairly common occurrence for a choreographer to create a work on someone who does not perform the premiere of the work, for a variety of reasons.

Actually, Osipova was first cast in the NY debut too. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/13/arts/dance/ratmanskys-firebird-for-american-ballet-theater.html

Given Osipova's schedule, it would not surprise me in the least to learn that the Firebird was "created on" Misty in the rehearsal studio, but premiered or debuted by Osipova. Given how little time Ratmansky has before he must move on to the next commission, he may have been in the studio creating the ballet on ABT's own dancers, with Osipova learning the part at a later time under the instruction of of someone else (Mrs. Ratmansky?). If you recall, a good portion of the Firebird's choreography seemed oddly to be solo work without interaction with the rest of the company. At the time, many people commented that this may have been attributed in part to Osipova's schedule/lack of availability while the work was being created in the studio.
  20. I notice that they are still selling tickets for the SB performance that is no longer Paloma's farewell at the Farewell Gala prices. Meanwhile, Paloma's actual farewell performance is being sold at regular ticket prices. I guess the press dept does not communicate with the department that runs the computer programs.
  21. Yes, Corella got a farewell. I was there too. In fact, from what I recall McKenzie was the one who encouraged Corella to have a farewell gala. Not sure why McKenzie decided to respond to Paloma's comments in the press. No point in bashing the woman. No way that McKenzie is going to come out of this looking like the victim. Just say no comment, Kevin!!
  22. These comments by the departing Reyes mirror what Corella said in the period leading up to his retirement- that Kevin wasn't offering him much to do even though Corella was ready, willing and able to dance. Yes, I agree that McKenzie went out of his way to keep Kent on the roster. The accommodation was not so much in the selection of works for the company, but in allowing her to repeatedly make significant modifications to the choreography of the classics in order to continue to appear in these ballets. I think that the "easier" works benefitted others in the company too, not just Kent. As an example, Vishneva was a big advocate of Lady of the Cams. too.
  23. Very revealing article. Such terrible treatment of Paloma. No room in the schedule for her to retire in something she was comfortable in! How rude of McKenzie. Yes, the earth would have stopped spinning if we had been deprived of a performance by Hee Seo or Boylston to make room for Paloma on the schedule.
  24. Maybe the comments on women choreographers needs to be broken off into some other thread?
