  1. Now, THAT' s a cliche. (What about just trying to mask the lack of skills to do strong, powerful and independent pointework...?)
  2. Thanks bart for your casting guessing..! (believe it or not, just visualizing these dancers makes easier to relate the pieces) (BTW, , i see that more and more Catoya is being left out lately in all dream castings-included by me-...mmm, wonder why )
  3. Hi everyone! MCB's Season is approaching, and I thought that since this will be another set of first timers for me, maybe I could have some help from those more experts of Balanchine and his works. Specifically, this Season will open with "The Four Temperaments" and SL Act II. Now, SL has been discussed, and i'm more or less aware of what to face and what to look at. But on FT I'm totally lost.... So, can you guys give me some advice? What do you remember from the NYCB stagings back on the days...? Who danced it?, Which accents should i look for on it? Any video reference that i can look at..? Any anecdotes related to the ballet..? Any info will be appreciated. If these thread exists already, please redirect my post. Thanks in advance!
  4. I haven't seen the ballet here in US but yes, MCB definitely lacks Manon material...but there's somebody nearby who i DO associate with this role-(and who iI've seen as a great Odile...coquettish, seductive, manipulative, but not overdone)-, Hayna Gutierrez, from CCBM.
  5. Thanks, Patrick for the info. Yes, i now recall the story...it was that the ballet was performed in an open venue of some sort, and that the amplified distorted sound was of such volume that it awaken the dog population of the vecinity, which created some chaos...not good.
  6. Wasn't this ballet the one that Villella recalls in his book as not being performed anymore because of some music issues, which made it unpopular...?
  7. From "Alicia Markova Remembers" "I danced again in Cuba, at the time when Fidel Castro was preparing his revolution, and was little alarmed by the evening broadcasts from his rebel radio station in the hills which announced, 'Tonight we shall take Havana!'.He did not accomplish this.. while i was there...". Oh, Miss Markova...if only your "while i was there" could be left out of the sentence...
  8. Found the Program! So here's a little review... XIII International Ballet Festival of Miami Closing Gala. PROGRAM: Ballet Nacional de Espana, Spain "El Albaicin". Estevez/Albeniz Jonatan Miro Another rendition of flamenco dancing, highly praised by the audience, but didn’t do anything for me.(Never been particularly fond of flamenco myself) Northern Ballet Theater, England "Three Preludes'. Nixon/Gershwin Keiko Amemori/Keneth Tindall This was the same couple that danced “M. Butterfly” the night before. I found the same lyrical qualities on their dancing, although the choreography was of high resemblance of that of the night before. Kind of repetitive, lifts and acrobatics. Still nice to watch. Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami, USA. Flower Festival of Genzano PDD. Hayna Gutierrez/Raydel Caceres Beautiful rendition of this piece. Hayna, as usual, brilliant on her footwork and speed, and with the lyrical qualities that makes her such a distinctive dancer. She enjoyed every bit of the choreography, and didn’t omit one accent. Bournonville at its best. Caceres was a good partner, but I missed Blanco with her. Compania Nacional de Danza, Mexico "Symphony for String: Adagio", Clifford/Mendelssohn Mayuko Nihei/Hector Jimenez The same girl that did the Dying Swan the night before. Very young, and well as her partner. A little anecdote. While at the theater I recognize Jose Zamorano, an ex Principal from Alonso’s Company from the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s, and approached him. As happened, he’s in Mexico, and among all the gossips that I got from him from his past within the Cuban Company, he told me that he was the coach of this Mexican couple. Cute piece. Bravo Zamorano! Houston Ballet, USA "Don Quixote PDD". Petipa/Minkus Nazomi Lijima/Randy Herrera Wow, what a great technician this girl is. She brought the house down with her coda of triples/singles all the way to the end, with minimal traveling, leg a la second-(I always watch for this detail, I know…sorry), although I prefer when they finish the sequences on pointe rather than the alternative flat position. Still, it was spectacular. I can’t remember her partner…sorry again. Martha Graham Dance Company, USA “Conversation of Lovers”. Graham/Nielsen Jennifer Palo/Maurizio Nardi. For Graham’s fans, there was this piece. I’m not one of them, so I proceeded to daydream through the piece, although I found it fluid and very well danced. ABT, USA “Flames of Paris PDD”. Vainonen/Asafiev Misty Copeland/Joseph Philips Same as the night before, Philips not as spectacular, but still putting a great show. I still don’t get used to Copeland’s image. Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Canada “Tango” Caniparoli/Rodgers Vanessa Lawson/Jaime Vargas Another tango…nothing different. I kept reading the program meanwhile. INTERMEZZO. (To be continued)
  9. I just noted this cute note on the CCBM site: "The CCBM Company and School will present the 'Nutcracker" with Hispanic versions of the characters".
  10. ...and now i DEFINITELY want to see Haiyan Wu as Odette...

  13. Trapdoor-(careful she doesn't get stuck with overstuffed tutus, a la Mme. Alonso! ) Hilarion portray: well intentioned good guy in love trying to unmask Albretch's lies or madly in love bad guy who's green of envy of the 2 lovers happiness display...?
  14. I mentioned this already, but he danced beautifully Flames here at the Int. Miami Ballet Festival with Misty Copeland. (He even upstaged her, IMO)
  15. I can picture her as Swanilda, or de doll for that matters. She definitely has that kind of plasticity required for the role. BTW, Welcome to BT, Lise!
  16. My current reading goes as follows. In my beach backpack I have like two John Grisham-(I know, I know, but it's a guilty pleasure, and I'm loving "The Firm" ). At my bedside I'm devouring Markova's "Giselle and I" and "Markova Remembers", and from my school bag there is "Gender-related differences in myocardial inflammatory and contractile responses to major burn trauma" by Jureta W. Horton, D. Jean White, and David L. Maass .
  17. I guess there's no explanation...just plain choreographic killing. (Actually I saw this happened in Festival, and it was strange to watch)
  18. No, I know about the two sets of balances-(as standard as they can be). My question was why is it that I've seen sometimes BOTH sets WITHOUT promenades...(or actually why is that they allow anyone to do so... )
