  1. Like this one of Lifar? Perhaps you could contact the writer to find out where the photo came from: https://oregonballettheatre.wordpress.com/2013/06/04/the-creation-of-an-enthralling-monument-of-20th-century-art/ Not quite what you are describing, but still pretty great - George Balanchine rehearsing Mikhail Baryshnikov by Paul Kolnik http://paulkolnik.photoshelter.com/image/I0000dXdr.Yl5TaU
  2. Nikolay Krusser has a rather massive Instagram page with many shots to look through. I get the impression that these are his "extra" photos (not appearing in professional publications and the like): https://www.instagram.com/nikolaikrusser/
  3. Joan Acocella has an in-depth review of Seibert's book on Tap dancing in the latest New Yorker. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/11/30/up-from-the-hold It sounds like a good read.
  4. I enjoyed her work in numerous films. It's good to hear that she had a long life. Rest in peace, Setsuko Hara.
  5. It can be difficult to find footage of Sylve dancing, so I was happy to come across these videos online: Sofiane Sylve and Vito Mazzeo in Black Swan pas de deux from Swan Lake Third Act https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wOACzu2iL0 Sofiane Sylve and Carlo Di Lanno in Italy (La Scala?) >> Some live footage of the pair as well as an interview in Italian and French https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HlMxLWtN98 Sofiane Sylve and Vito Mazzeo in Wheeldon's Continuum pas de deux https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogFegyPbAaE
  6. Nice find! Thanks for sharing. There are quite a few interesting works of art on that website.
  7. Yes, that is sad - she was my favorite dancer at PNB, along with Carla Körbes. I assume this has a lot to do with her having a child - the family comes first now.
  8. Robert Craft, Stravinsky Adviser and Steward, Dies at 92 http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/15/arts/music/robert-craft-stravinsky-adviser-and-steward-dies-at-92.html

  10. In the age of Instagram and Facebook, we sometimes get to see some great short videos. These are all SFB related - short but sweet: Helimets and Froustey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdGmUqBkBLc&feature=youtu.be Frances Chung https://instagram.com/p/9o76KrJ4cF/?taken-by=franadian https://instagram.com/p/qEaq7fp4TM/?taken-by=franadian Mathilde Froustey https://instagram.com/p/8M7KGlHrf5/?taken-by=lapetitefrench_ https://instagram.com/p/8M-LqAHrTf/?taken-by=lapetitefrench_ Sasha De Sola https://instagram.com/p/qEzCdFQOFk/?taken-by=sashadesola https://instagram.com/p/z3cpk1QOEV/?taken-by=sashadesola Tiit Helimets and Chloe in Giselle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNdTcbfbIR8
  11. My understanding is that Nina Ananiashvili was indeed decalred Assoluta by the Georgian State Republic. So already done. ;)
  12. So it is more a matter of not being quite ready for the classroom life. I'm sure she's noticed that at this stage of her career, 2 nights performing in Bejing, or wherever, can be extremely lucrative. I wish she would put in an appearance in California. ;)
  13. Does anyone know more about this announcement (if you can call Twitter "tweets" that): Dupont comments that, "Clotilde Vayer kept her status and Benjamin Pech became assistant ballet master of management." https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=547459348735764&id=314521315362903 What went wrong? Or was Dupont not feeling ready for the position? She is currently in Beijing to perform with Alessio Carbone for a couple of nights.
  14. There is an interesting article on the SFB Blog by Muriel Maffre (you can file this one under "What happens to dancers after they retire?") about the Museum of Performance + Design. I've never been there myself, but will have to make the effort next time I'm in SF. Museum of Performance + Design website
  15. Interesting. I like being able to look about at what the Corps dancers, or the coaches are up to, rather than simply be forced to focus on a particular area - the tyranny of the camera view disappears.
  16. The dancers can attempt to make a statement with their choreography choice, but the Concours judges aren't dumb - they are not going to discount a great performance just because the program choice was predictable. I think the dancers are trying to demonstrate that they are "with it", and capable of dancing whatever Millepied programs for them, and that is fine: they will need to be ready for a challenge. O'Neill's choice of Nureyev also seems calculated to show respect for the POB and its traditions (since she is coming form the outside), and that makes sense too.

    Joy Womack

Work ethic still counts for a great deal in the ballet world, and the Russian dancers once had the reputation of being hard workers - this may be changing in recent years, but someone like Maria Kochetkova (as Plisskin mentions above), is a total Type-A personality - no one can say she hasn't worked for what is coming to her (the problem for Kochetkova is getting adequate rest and relaxation). Womack strikes me as being very much of her generation - there's a certain air of entitlement to go with all the airing of "feelings" for all the world to see and hear about. It certainly isn't only Womack with these attitudes. No A.D. loves dealing with a prima donna, or emotional basketcase, but it does go with the territory.
  18. O'Neill's story is an interesting one: http://www.pointemagazine.com/issues/februarymarch-2013/dancer-spotlight-underdog I wonder just how many "stagiaire" have made it to Première Danseuse?
  19. Can you tell us a bit about your class? What are the student demographics for this class? And what are you looking for them to get out of Ballet 101?
  20. Joan Boada has often been paired with Kochetkova, who will be spending more of her time at ABT - perhaps all of her time. I can see Boada being a good partner for Dores André too, but he may be struggling at present to find roles. A disappointing way to go out, really - I hope this last season proves me wrong, and he finds decent roles. Pascal Molat has been one of SFB's very best 'character' dancers, and always high energy. I'm going to miss him particularly. Losing both Damian Smith and Pascal Molat leaves SFB with no great character danseurs that I can think of.
  21. You know, I like what I'm seeing here - stylish, interesting details, nice geometries and flow. A good group of dancers, too.

    Maria Kochetkova

And now for something completely different - Maria "Masha" Kochetkova is debuting her own fashion brand (at least that is how I understand it): http://www.koche-kova.com/ I suppose this was inevitable.
