  1. Yes. That was for T&V. There's a video of her coaching Paloma Herrera and Corella in the roles. But my question remains as to why Waltz Academy is not even listed, as if it never existed. I wonder if that's the same case with other of his "lost" ballets...

Through the 80's and early 90's Aonso presented the three B works she had danced in-(WA, Apollo and T&V)- in her own stagings... without the Trust licensing-(which at some point created a major legal issue). For what I can tell T&V was just exactly as I have seen it here, but Apollo was longer and somehow different in style and less bare-(later, while already in US, I knew about the revisions done by B). There are probably bootlegs of that gala somewhere, but no official recording was made. Given the resolute way in which she has treated the works she danced in through the years, it would had been a great idea to have the work somehow recorded. But it wasn't done, sadly. So...the fact that it is "lost" is the reason for not being on the Trust list...?

Where is 1944 "Waltz Academy" ?...Alonso danced in it and I vaguely remember a mid 80's staging she did in Havana for a double tribute Balanchine/Massine in which she presented both WA and Aleko.   4. Some performances, either live it on DVD are worth to go see not specifically for their dancers but for the production itself. Pharaoh's daughter is one of those. This is a recreation of one of Petipa's most successful ballets, and also a lavish production, so yes. As per Zakharova, I think you will find, at least on this forum, a general distaste for her technique. I myself don't care about her dancing, but who knows....maybe you will enjoy her.

Back in the 80's, early 90's, when I saw Charin-(Suarez)- she was the only one who dared to add spicy pyrotechnics to classical choreo, but as you say...always within an elegant and measured context. Valdes has NEVER been an elegant ballerina, and her promotion was just based on the sudden defection of ALL her contemporaries-(particularly the Feijoo sisters). Until today the Cuban balletomanne community look upon her with a Skorik/Somova criteria. I myself have always avoided her performances, which is why I didn't even bother to go see them in DC.
  7. Thanks for the video. I had seen it, along with an interview of Alonso in which she's asked about her favorite Albrecht. The list was long along her long career, including Dolin, Youskevitch, Eglevsky, Bruhn, Semyonov, V.Vasiliev and Atanassoff. About Bruhn she says that by the time they danced it, she had had more than a decade dancing the role, and he was very young, and that it had been a pleasure to intrduce him to the ballet. Interestingly, she calls Eglevsky her most "exciting" Albrecht, and Youskevitch the one she put her blindness at his disposal, giving him her absolute trust.   8. Yeah. Suarez getting in the eye of Alonso stories were famous. I think Alicia knew there was finally someone on the Cuban ballet radar that, given the chance of having an international career, could had outshine her, technically wise. A friend of mine told me that Alonso, who used to go to every single performance of Suarez, even blind...to carefully assess the situation, used to get very nervous when audiences started to roar during any of Suarez circus-like stunt-(she was also called "la cirquera"πŸ˜‚), and would angrily say to her companions arund her..."Y ahora que c... esta haciendo "esa"....?!?"..."So what the hell is she doing now...?!?" It was envy.
  9. There's a whole documentary. "Queen of Thursdays"-(she was baptized as such by her fans due to the perennial post for Thursdays performances Alicia seemed to be so fond of to give to her)
  10. It was definitely her. It was probably the first time Alonso was back in US since she left in 1960, so definitely needed to show her most talented dancers. But aside from that, little she toured, and was made Principal at almost 40, which was a horrible thing for Alonso to do
  11. Oh wow...I forgot about Correa! Didn't even know she was still dancing. She was never a delicate ballerina, but rather a sturdy one. Would be interesting to see her Nikiya.
  12. She was quite the black sheep of Alonso's company. Always relegated...never allowed to tour..her defection and very vocal criticism of Alonso's tyranny were epic. I often see her at ballet performances down here. She's a faculty member somewhere.
  13. Arova quite nail the hops the right way, IMO, and covers a good part of the stage, which is another exciting element of the sequence. Also...the very climax of the whole thing as I remember, was for the ballerina to go into penchee while traveling and to finish with an attitude derriere cambre. Not all of them did them, but Rosario Suarez never failed to show her capability. @ 4:45

Dusting off this thread, here's another example I just found that makes me believe this sautees vogages in arabesque/penchee were known and done around the 50's in NYC-(Alonso claims to have learned the step while at BT). Actually the whole coda looks EXACTLY as it is done in Havana today. Fouettes/sautees on pointe/piques/run-jump-fish dive. Sonia Arova and Erick Bruhn. And here's Lupe Serrano, ALTHOUGH... obviously easing her way through...πŸ˜‘
  15. You can never watch enough Giselles. I will suggest you to go with it. Sleeping Beauty is grander, in terms of amount of variations, stage time, music score and costumes design, but the shorter Giselle has everything you can ask for, including the emotional/psychological aspect that SB lacks. And of course...for every terrifying Beauty's Rose Adagio there is always an equally terrifying Giselle's Pas Seul, so you will have the same fun carefully analyzing the ballerina technical ability or lack of. Go with Giselle.

  17. I suspect Gomes has taken the smartest path even if the two possibilities are to be considered. If he 1-did "something"-(to which we don't know the details, the extent of it or how consensual or not it was. Yes...there have probably been countless of those allegations out there in which the "act" in question was originally consensual) or 2- if has been the subject of a scheme/witch hunt. He was probably on the verge of retirement at ABT, and if he was innocent, it would had been a hideous drama for him to stay while he was investigated or to temporarily get a suspension, a la Martins, which at the end it is bad too. If he was guilty, all the story and diminishing details would had been by now in our mouths and the arts circle gossiping networks. He probably cut a deal to quietly get off his contract in return for a gag order from all the opposite outlets. Smart decision. I LOVE Gomes.

  20. Wonderful news, which means... JEANETTE DELGADO FINALLY ABLE TO DANCE THE BALLET!! This would certainly be a challenge for the company, which is a small one. Dancers will be forced to take several roles in the ballet. So.... what's gonna happen now with their beautiful Balanchine one act production...? I guess they would still be able to keep both...

  22. He's still not performing in tutu and pointe, but I would still be curious to go to a performance to see him onstage now that his stage presence doesn't involves ballet mockery. I mean...this is quite a novelty, and if he EVER gets to tutu and pointes, well...even more of a curiousity. And I'm sure Rojo knows that.
