  1. Kiyon Gaines said in the Saturday evening Q&A that Tharp worked a lot with him on his acting and react.ing in those scenes. I wish I had been able to see Rachel Foster in the role that Laura Tisserand danced for one performance first weekend. I can imagine her in it. She!ms cast for Thurs-Sat this coming weekend.
  2. There has been some cast shifting. Laura Tisserand danced with Jonathan Porretta in "Waiting for the Station" all three performances this past weekend. Rachel Foster makes her debut in the role on Thursday, as well as in Brief Fling" with Eric Hipolito Jr, and Carli Samuelson and Kyle/Davis debut as the other Red couple on Thursday. Friday, Angelica Generosa, Price Suddarth, and Steven Loch join Ezra Thomson in the Greens. On Saturday, Generosa debuts in "Forget Domani" in "Sinatra." Alastair Macaulay was in the house last weekend, and those who know what Stella Abrera looks like saw her in the audience to see her husband, Sasha Radetsky, perform in "Brief Fling" on Saturday night. (Sorry for the original typos: I was posting from my phone.)

  4. [Admin beanie on] A reminder to discuss the topic, not each other. We also assume that if someone makes a value judgement or statement about an aesthetic issue or performance, it is their opinion, unless they attribute it to someone else. We'd use 10% more bandwidth if everyone preceded their statements with "In my opinion" and "I think." [Admin beanie off] It's from a European publication. Just as many US critics don't get to Europe too often to see the great dancers there, the same is true of European critics, who may get to NYC once in a while, but have a much wider range of companies they can see using extensive and efficient train systems. Pamela Rosenberg was a symposium speaker during Seattle's third Ring Cycle this summer. She started by saying that in post-war Germany alone, there were 150 opera houses alone. People could see several productions of the same opera within an hour of where they lived.
  5. Carreno would make a beautiful Gamache in the Ratmansky version.
  6. I always thought that Cunningham's women could dance anything they wanted to.
  7. As I mentioned upstream, this thread is about the inclusion of SF Ballet dancers on Macaulay's American Ballerinas list. I've moved general discussion posts to the original thread in "Writings on Ballet," and I'm closing this thread.
  8. Exactly, or he still might be there. ABT has a tendency to let it's dancers rot on the vine.
  9. He'll make his debut in "Sleeping Beauty" with Osipova on 27 March 2014 after joining the Royal Ballet in February. From the Royal Ballet: http://www.roh.org.uk/news/matthew-golding-to-join-the-royal-ballet-as-a-principal From Dutch National Ballet: http://www.het-ballet.nl/en/news/news/2013/09/24/matthew-golding-joins-royal-ballet/ He'll be a regular Guest Artist at Dutch National Ballet starting in 2014-15. Kudos to the Royal Ballet for getting him to join!
  10. Chung, like Alex Wong (formerly MCB), trained at Goh Ballet in Vancouver.
  11. He partners Kaori Nakamura on Thursday, 3 October. In "Waiting for the Station," In Couple 2, Jonathan Porretta partners Laura (Gilbreath) Tisserand on Sunday, 6 October. He's paired with Rachel Foster in all other performances.
  12. Korbes was born in Brazil and trained there until she was a young teenager and didn't fit Macaulay's criteria. I was shocked that she wasn't on his list until this was pointed out to me.
  13. Many thanks for telling us about this, Swanhilda8!
  14. A short promo with flashes of Tharp's new "Waiting at the Station," which is set to Allen Toussaint's music. Mr. Toussaint will be performing at the shows first weekend.

  17. Note that the rehearsal of Tharp's new work will not be part of the stream. Here's the press release: Pacific Northwest Ballet to Live-Stream a Portion of Lecture-Demonstration with Twyla Tharp Tune in to PNB.org/LIVE 6:30 pm Pacific (9:30 pm East Coast) Wednesday, September 25, 2013 SEATTLE, WA — As Pacific Northwest Ballet gears up for the opening of its season with AIR TWYLA, the company has announced that a portion of its lecture-demonstration, TWYLA THARP ON STAGE, will be live-streamed (via PNB.org/LIVE) for audiences who are unable to attend the September 25 evening at McCaw Hall. TWYLA THARP ON STAGE will feature Ms. Tharp, PNB’s first artist-in-residence, in conversation with Artistic Director Peter Boal and New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint, as well as the company rehearsing excerpts from Brief Fling and a run-thru of Waiting at the Station. I’m especially looking forward to the opportunity to hear Twyla talk about the creation process during the on-stage lecture demonstration.” AIR TWYLA presents a trio of works by Twyla Tharp. The program includes the world premiere of Waiting at the Station with a commissioned score by Mr. Toussaint, the Scottish-inspired Brief Fling (a PNB premiere), and Tharp’s homage to Ol’ Blue Eyes and ballroom dance, the unforgettable Nine Sinatra Songs. AIR TWYLA runs for only seven performances, September 27 – October 6 at Seattle Center’s Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. 18. I think the 1pm Sunday slots for the Bolshoi Ballet, are to make them family friendly. (Live would be too early.) I've seen a lot more kids in Vancouver at the tutu balets. I wish they were earlier in the morning, even if not at live time.
  19. Finally they updated their website .
  20. I just listened and came into post about the five Native American ballerinas commemorated in "Five Moon," but pherank long beat me to it I loved listening to him speak after all of those years watching him dance. I had forgotten he was only 16 when Peter Martins choreographed "Concerto for Two Solo Pianos" for him, Watts, and Andersen.
  21. First week casting is up on the website: http://www.pnb.org/Season/13-14/AirTwyla/#Casting

    Giselle?

Giselle's variation and the Peasant Pas de Deux in Act I are wonderful pieces.

Dance Theatre of Harlem never had the prestige of the most established companies, even when they gave better performances. Now, it is the equivalent of a start-up. Start-ups generally take personal commitment to the mission beyond normal employment. DePrince was not brought up at the school, nor was she someone for whom DTH was a lifelong dream.

What Johnson said, Assuming this is accurate and that DePrince had this conversation with her, why are DePrince's own wishes "insulting" or "dismissive"?
