  1. yes, it's quite common to do that in opera houses where they have the flexibility to use the front part as either orchestra pit or seats. In Toronto the "front" row is row D.
  2. just to clarify, YOU Dance is a program of the National Ballet of Canada, not of the National Ballet School (which is a different organization)
  3. Watch LIVE! Thursday at 11:30 am Joffrey hosts a LIVE STREAM of Christopher Wheeldon rehearsing his "Swan Lake" with the Joffrey dancers. YouTube page: youtube.com/user/TheJoffreyBallet

  5. Interesting. I find the Dutch version cover much more elegant than the English version. And the title in Dutch translates as "They called me devil child" (!!) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ze-noemden-duivelskind-Michaela-DePrince/dp/9048820871/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407841984&sr=8-1&keywords=Ze+noemden+me+duivelskind http://www.amazon.ca/Taking-Flight-Orphan-Star-Ballerina/dp/0385755112/ref=sr_1_1_bnp_1_har?ie=UTF8&qid=1407841392&sr=8-1&keywords=Taking+Flight%3A+From+War+Orphan+to+Star+Ballerina
  6. Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina by Michaela and Elaine DePrince will be available as of October 14 through the usual outlets. Hardback and Kindle editions available.
  7. Total Body Trifecta in Ballston Spa near Saratoga does something similar every year with Andrew Scordato when NYCB is in season there and I cannot TELL you how much fun it is! So far I've learned bits of Rubies ("Emeralds is romantic, Diamonds is classical, and Rubies is hot and sexy... and so are you ladies so we're going to do Rubies" dixit Andrew ), the opening corps part for the last movement of Stravinsky Violin Concerto, and this year, the arms for Justin Peck's Everywhere we go. LOVED it.
  8. The Telegraph will be live streaming the Mariinsky Ballet in class on Wednesday August 6. Live stream begins at 1055 am London time, but the stream will be kept up for 7 days afterwards, so no need to get up early if you're in North America. Here's the link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/dance/11011335/WATCH-the-Mariinsky-Ballet-in-class.html
  9. I think only a masochist would apply for that job!
  10. I wasn't thinking of the ticket sales, I was thinking of them getting trashed by the critics.
  11. Poor Semperoper Ballett Dresden bringing Forsythe, after the trashing his work got by the NY critics reviewing Boston Ballet!
  12. My reasoning exactly. Meanwhile, in Munich I was reprimanded by an usher for taking a picture of my group in the LOBBY during an intermission! Katherine Barber, reprimanded by ushers on three continents.. On a tour of the opera house in Stuttgart we were told we couldn't take pictures of the stage because the sets and costumes were copyrighted and it would be ok if we were just going to look at the pics ourselves but then they get posted on the internet with no attribution etc and they said it was just easier to say "no pics of whatever's on the stage". We were told in Denmark not to take pictures of the kids on the stage for a school performance but I don't know if that was because of privacy issues concerning pictures of children or the aforementioned copyright issues.
  13. I was reprimanded quite severely (and rudely, I would say) by an usher at the Kennedy Center for taking a picture of my group sitting in the auditorium during an intermission! "Didn't you hear the announcement?" she snarled at me, and when I said "Oh sorry, I thought that meant not to take pictures of the performance", she snarled again "Didn't you hear the announcement? [you blithering idiot, implied]". Seriously, it's outrageous that people who pay good money for tickets are treated in this way. The Sydney Opera House is also strict about no pix ever.
  14. any ideas which theatre they're likely to be in ? BAM? City Centre? NYCB is in the Koch theatre the week before and several weeks after the week of Mariinsky's Kennedy run.
  15. The National Ballet of Canada has three Italians, all in the corps for now: Giorgio Galli, Francesco Gabriele Frola, and Shaila d'Onofrio. What's it like at your home companies?
  16. he;s a keeper, that's for sure.
  17. I'm sure these decisions are not taken lightly, and if they could have found someone they would have. When I was in SF in May something similar happened. They were supposed to do Agon and replaced it with The Fifth Season. Also, they dropped one movement out of Suite en Blanc. One thing's for sure, it's not easy being an AD and being confronted with these problems; much easier for us armchair artistic directors!
  18. NYC Dance project has an interview and GREAT pics of Artem Ovcharenko: http://nycdanceproject.com/artem-ovcharenko/
  19. the rake is not bad and the seats are quite well staggered. I sat in the third row for NYCB and had a good view of the stage so long as the two people in front of me weren't putting their heads together to compare notes on what they thought of the proceedings!
  20. ranking them how? quality? size? funding? Could you explain?
  21. different angels, eh? I guess you have to have really good connections to get them on staff... ;-)
  22. lovely trailer 4mrdncr. Do you have an indiegogo or kickstarter campaign to finish financing your film? I would happily promote it on my website if so.
