Boston Ballet 2020-21 season

Boston Ballet has announced their next season, although many details are missing in the mixed bills. I was pleased to see Wheeldon's Midsummer Night's Dream and recommend it. This was his first full-length ballet, in 1997, commissioned by the Colorado Ballet. I saw it in 2017 and it's delightful.

I am not sure where to put this, but I also don't feel it deserves a new thread by itself. Plus, her thread in Dancers got locked.

Anyways, Joy Womack posted on Instagram that she's back in Russia waiting to get paperwork sorted, and she wishes Boston Ballet good luck on the season's opener. Did she leave the company?

I'm a bit sad we won't get to see her dance with Boston Ballet at all if that is the case, but she's always been tied to Russia in her heart hasn't she?

Boston Ballet is going to try a six-performance virtual season @$180, just a little less than the PNB subscription. I'm on their e-mail list so I'm surprised I hadn't received any publicity about this.

So that's PNB, Louisville, Boston -- are there others planning to try this?

Several weeks ago, San Francisco Ballet sent out a questionnaire.  Among other things, they asked if we would be willing to pay to watch professionally produced on line programs.  I can't remember details now, but that sounds to me like they are considering it.  The problem is that, no matter how undesirable it is to watch videos rather than live performances, I'm not about to pass up a chance to see companies that I would never otherwise be able to attend in person, and I can see my Social Security check rapidly withering away to nothing if I buy subscriptions to all these companies.  [sigh]

I feel so badly for all the dancers. I see them all over social media trying to stay in shape, looking for outdoor performing venues, safely rehearsing in small groups in whatever huge spaces they can secure. They have such short careers. Even leaving aside the financial hardships, this pandemic is brutal for all of them. What I like about the new virtual efforts: they are using actual dancers now, whether alone in black box theaters or empty theaters or outdoors, with all the requisite distancing, testing, etc. At least they are performing. I hope these experiments spread, especially as we start facing up to the realities of 2021. Does anybody believe NYCB will be back to normal for their winter season?

I confess I'm not a Forsythe fan. I saw his Pas/Part at San Francisco Ballet a few years ago and just hated it. I saw his Love Songs with Stuttgart Ballet at the Kennedy Center in 1979 and remember thinking it was the most misogynistic ballet ever made. Anne Nugent published an excellent overview of his work in that era, including Love Songshttps://www.jstor.org/stable/25598043?seq=1

I do appreciate the (too-brief) clips on the Boston Ballet digital program and I'm willing to try again, although I wish we could see even one complete work. He does seem to have a loyal following and I see his work programmed at several companies. Still, I can't imagine seeking out his work in the future.

I gather he has softened Love Songs over the years. The YouTube Clip is more recent, but this gives you an idea:

The third program opens tomorrow on Boston Ballet's digital subscription and it's impressive: 3 by Yacobson, Bella Figura by Kylian,  and Symphony in 3 Movements! I hadn't seen the complete listing until now.

The four remaining programs are $120.

EDITED TO ADD: I just watched the program. The three by Yacobson are fascinating and they have a brief commentary by Janice Ross, who published an important book about him, Like a Bomb Going Off. Excerpts by Kylian. But no Symphony in 3 - just a very brief clip during an interview. I must have misread the program.
