NEA grants for dance for 2014

Yesterday the National Endowment for the Arts announced 104 grants worth $2,640,000 in dance. Many are for commissions and touring in ballet:

Interesting. Thanks for posting. ABT got $70,000 to stage Ashton's Cinderella, and NYCB got $80,000 to present the new Liam Scarlett and Justin Peck ballets in 2014.

Five companies -- Boston, Houston, Nashville, Pennsylvania, and Smuin, in addition to Alvin Ailey -- raised the money based on presenting Kylian works. PNB and Tulsa Ballet Theatre are doing Cerrudo works. Grand Rapids Ballet and Washington Ballet are doing works by Ochoa Lopez. ABT and Joffrey are doing Wheeldon ballets.

San Francisco Ballet received the second-largest grant for ballet; the description lists a commission by Ratmansky.

One step removed is that PHILADANCO received $50K to work with Ulysses Dove's brother to reconstruct and present Dove's "Bad Blood," which means we will likely see it at PNB in the future.

Arts presenters and festivals that typically present ballet are:

• Dance St. Louis ($30K)
• Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival ($80K)
• Joyce Theater Foundation ($80K)

Joffrey is using the grant money to present Wheeldon, but ABT is using theirs for the Ashton "Cinderella":

To support the restaging and performances of Sir Frederick Ashton's "Cinderella," set to Sergei Prokofiev's score. The evening-length, three-act ballet will be an American Ballet Theatre premiere, and will be set on the company by former Royal Ballet dancer Wendy Ellis Somes. Sir Frederick Ashton is widely credited for the innovative growth of ballet in modern-day England, and for nurturing a distinct British style.

Seems like peanuts compared to what the NEA used to grant decades ago, particularly when one hears the pentagon gets to spend in the neighborhood of $550 Million annually on it's music. (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/161837-analyst-military-bands-to-cost-dod-50b-in-50-years)....

To support the commissioning of works and performances during American Dance Festival. The project will feature the creation and presentation of new and reconstructed works by established and emerging artists such as John Jasperse Company, Shen Wei Dance, Pilobolus, Ballet Hispanico, Kate Weare Company, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Tere O'Connor, Adele Myers and Dancers, Carl Flink, Netta Yerushalmy, and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. A mini-festival of Minnesota artists such as Chris Yon, Chris Schlichting, and Emily Johnson will be featured. International artists to be presented may include Lucy Guerin from Australia, Ultima Vez of Belgium, Emanuel Gat Dance from France, and Gregory Maqoma from South Africa.

I don't see any ballet companies or choreographers in that description.

Modern dance companies and festivals received a boatload of $$ in grants. Cal Perfs received money for a non-ballet Mark Morris work, and the usual suspects, like the usual ballet companies, were grantees. That would be an appropriate topic in the "Modern and Other Dance" forum.

I understand. I should have clicked through to the site instead of thinking Helene had posted the all dance info here. I didn't realize ADF did not present ballet. I've always equated it with The Pillow.

Before moving to the Duke campus ADF was based at Bennington in Vermont and then Conneticut College..

ADF was founded by the generation of American modern dancers who didn't trust ballet -- the school and the festival have certainly moderated their perspective over time, but they don't present ballet in the same way that the Pillow does.
