As is Yvonne.

I'm struck by the programming of Thou Swell and West Side Story Suite on the same bill. Kind of a heavy emphasis on Broadway, isn't it? It would have been possible this week to have Thou Swell, WSS and Who Cares all on the same program. Now, that would have been something!

And i'm not going to be at any of those performances! I have been waiting for Bouder to both those roles! I am envious of all of you who will be there (and love her like I do).

edited to add: i'm going to buy a ticket for tonight, afterall! Thanks, Alexandra!

Now that Ashley is doing S&S I will just have to attend the NYCB evening performance after a Met Pelleas matinee. The last time I saw her do S&S was at her SAB Workshop performance in spring of 2000 (with just a little S&S snipet (the pas) at the Wall-to-Wall Balanchine event at Symphony Space last March).

bobbi, you are in for a long day...but I'm sure it will be rewarding! PELLEAS is a gorgeous opera but I skipped it this year because the last time I heard von Otter she hasn't sounded so good. But Melisande is not vocally taxing...I'd be curious to hear your impressions...and of Bouder in S & S, of course!

That's disappointing to hear about von Otter. See, she's just singing too much Elvis Costello cross-over instead of Pierrot Lunaire :beg:

I second that Pelleas et Melisande is a gorgeous opera. I was lucky to hear it two summers ago in concert version with the Vancouver Opera; having the symphony on stage behind the singers emphasized how incredible the orchestration was.

And what a program you'll be seeing at NYCB: Evans and Kowrowski in Agon, Boal in his last season as Prodigal Son, and Bouder in Stars and Stripes!

I do think von Otter has been frittering away her instrument lately...to sing "too small" can be as dangerous as to sing things which are too heavy. I hear the same thing in Dawn Upshaw, and it seems already to have sent Sylvia McNair on the cabaret route. You have to use the whole instrument, no matter what you are singing...you can't cut off the support when doing pop or crossover. Dorothy Kirsten & Eileen Farrell knew the trick.
