  1. http://www.citydance.net/ Is anyone planning on attending City Dance Ensemble's performance at the Kennedy Center? AIRBORNE: CityDance's Season Opening TWO NIGHT RUN at the John F. Kennedy Center With ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE RASTA THOMAS WEDNESDAY, October 22nd at 7:30pm THURSDAY, October 23rd at 7:30pm I'm primarily interested to hear about this company because a relative of mine is performing with them now, and, although her name is not currently listed on their website's list of dancers, it's pretty exciting to us! I hear the company is quite up and coming - have any of you seen them perform?
  2. After reading the post in today's Links forum about Carolina Ballet... I decided to read a bit more about this company and its dancers and found the name of Zlato Fagundes - and am wondering if this is the same person who was injured during, at least, part of the SAB Workshop performances this year? I'm sure there are many other notable names on this roster, but his caught my eye initially.

    Peter O' Brien?

Can anyone tell me about this dancer/teacher? What his background is, etc.? He's filling in for Michael Vernon at Steps in NYC. Thanks!
  4. Oh Mel, you are such a treasure trove of handy info.! rg, thank you so much for your detailed pointers about the NYCB programs...now I'll just have to set aside a bit of time to see if I can follow your description. Seriously though, I am sure the specifics will be extremely helpful to all the balletomanes from wayback...and perhaps a relative neophyte like myself will get a jump on organizing my own toppling piles of programs.
  5. I'm ashamed to say that I haven't been keeping my eyes open to all the different discussions on all the forums here - and I'm truly sorry that I've only happened upon this one now. Many thanks, Its the mom, for bringing this up with your daughter's story. I'd be interested to hear what sort of reaction you received from the teacher when you followed up? I want to believe it was an unfortunate mistake on her part. Eland, I really appreciate your posting on this topic - it is always wonderful when people take the time to really read through the different forums and comment on subjects that are important to them. I have no doubt that there are others, like me, who missed this topic when it first came up. And by the way, eland, welcome to Ballet Talk - I have no doubt that you have much to offer in the various discussions. And I'm with you when you say:
  6. Jack, copy or no copy - it didn't work for me. Any chance you might try again?
  7. Thanks for the reply dufay, I'm not 100% sure when...I am an old Dracula lover from way back, so I think that might be fun...but I'm also interested in seeing them perform some of their Balanchine ballets and I really would like to see Wheeldon's "Swan Lake" too. So many ballets in so many places! I'll keep you posted as time goes by.
  8. Yes, thank you for the information. Now, here's my question what does "B + -" mean? Plus or minus Divertimento 15?
  9. There are three extremely positive reviews today on the Links section of the board. They praise not only Christopher Wheeldon but the dancers of the San Francisco Ballet! Wouldn't it be something to have an opportunity to bring all the best ballet companies of the world together somewhere for a week, in order to see them all perform?
  10. Although I've never seen this ballet company perform, I have heard about them for years and look forward to getting down there this season. I find reading about the dancers' backgrounds quite interesting - there's a real mixture there with backgrounds from Julliard, SAB, Harid, NYCB, ABT, etc., ...not to mention PA Ballet's own second company and, at least two, offspring of ballet dancing parents.
  11. Thanks carbo, I'm sure the Brooklyn College is perfectly fine...since we're coming from northeast of NYC, I'll have to check out my routes to both - but this time we're going to be sure to make it to one or the other. B) P.S. I think beanies are fine, as long as they come in a variety of sizes and are hybrids.
  12. Thanks Farrell Fan - and if you're planning on attending please let me know and this time we should wear our alertnik identity cards pinned to our lapels so we'll be able to spot each other!
  13. (Orginally I had posted this on the News and Announcements but thought I should move it here.) Thanks to Alexandra's link to the Toby Tobias "blog" on Arts Journal , I've just been reminded that Suzanne Farrell's company is performing on October 11th at NJPAC...but what I didn't know is that they will also be at Brooklyn College on October 12th for a matinee. What is Brooklyn College like as a place to watch ballet? I've never been to NJPAC, in Newark, NJ, though I have heard it's quite nice... Any comments?
  14. Funny Face has written on a new thread, started by Pas de Cutie on "Cross Talk", entitled Ballet and its aesthetic requirements.Check it out, as in many ways, it's an offshoot of this topic.
  15. Thanks for your remarks - I'm going for Program B... and by the way Mark D if you do a search on them there are a number of threads dating back to 2001 - which may be their last time in the states??
  16. I just received this flyer in the mail yesterday. Planning to get tickets for Program B. I have, of course, never seen them before but have seen a documentary on Ms. Alonso. Haven't tried a search yet, but I'd be interested to hear what those of you who are familiar have to say about this company today. Thanks!

This is definitely a much better marketing tool than the PA Ballet's Guiness Book of World Records "How many people can stand en pointe at one time" plan - this is smart and something a number of well known companies ought to plan ASAP...in my opinion. We're always bemoaning either the public's lack of interest in ballet or the fact that ticket prices are so expensive that most people wouldn't think of going to "check out" what a ballet is all about...unless of course it has a "racey" ad or two to draw them in. Why can't, for example, NYCB do this right in Lincoln Center? Just a thought.
  18. Thank you both so much! I'm looking forward to our visit and our first time seeing The Pennsylvania Ballet. I'll let you know where we end up. B)
  19. Yes, "rk" thank you for your views. I admire your spirit and willingness to stand up for something "on the record" in that newspaper piece. "For Art's Sake" is the perfect name for your volunteer organization. More power to you all.
  20. How about suggestions of places to stay over night? I know I can do the whole hotel search thing but thought I'd see what some of you might have to say. I will be driving when we go and would love to stay in the city itself and, ideally, be able to walk to the performance. Am I correct that both venues are within a reasonable distance of each other? Thanks in advance!
  21. Actually, I think their "marketing" ideas are fun. I know my daughter would be there if I'd drive her with pointe shoes on. In my opinion, the College Fest idea is ingenious - something a number of our cities might think of trying. "The Night on the Town" sounds pretty enticing, too. I say three cheers! :grinning:
  22. Have you checked their website lately? I know there is a newsletter you can download as a pdf file... and then I was almost sure I'd read something recently on the board in the Links forum about their dancers but my initial search didn't turn anything up. Click around on their website they have press releases, etc., there and let us know if you find anything pugbee - I know I read about their current company members somewhere!
  23. Thank you nlkflint... I must say that Rambart's website is quite something! I know we've discussed the concept of physics in relation to ballet... So I did a search on it and these are the links I've come up with...for those who might be interested. B)
  24. Thank you Farrell Fan - I must run down to the Post Office and get ahold of that new Audrey Hepburn stamp...and I do hope that there is a Balanchine stamp in the works, as well.
  25. Gianinna's thread of encouragement is another good one to revive right about now, too. Who was it that said "He who hesitates is lost."? :)
