  1. RIP Mrs. Ryom. We've had two different outcomes recently from brain aneurysms within the ballet world; Mr. Garcia from MCB and this now...
  2. The peasant section in the Larin house was weird too. I think they meant to portray some sort of the "wild Russian peasant spirit" , but the fact that it takes place INSIDE the house makes it silly. Would that had taken place within the natural habitat of the group-(even with the masters as watchers)-it would had looked better. I think the girl was supposed to be enjoying the tossing. The red number on Netrebko during the ballroom scene would had looked better sans the train.
  3. He is melodramatic, Helene...but I fall for him everytime...it doesn't fail. Beczala was the star of this transmission...
  4. Did we all love Piotr Beczala's soulful, beautiful rendition of Lenski's "Kuda, Kuda" today...? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DG5zK7GBXwQ
  5. Will I have the chance at ABT to listen to the Polonaise in A major-('Military')- as the ballet starter...?
  6. I'm very excited about Chopiniana. I will be jumping again on a plane just for it. This ballet is deeply engraved in my memory and heart, and was a staple of my Alonso's company all the way until I left Cuba-(it was actually on the very last program I ever saw over there...(sight)..). I can't wait for the magical Glazunov orchestration of Chopin and the swirling Sylphs...

Oh mamma mia..! Edited to add: It is indeed written somewhere..."The end is coming"...
  8. Rather than individual dancers or choreographers, I think more in those whose strong will and determination have propelled significant forces within the art form. Ninette de Valois, Lucia Chase and Alicia Alonso are three of those. Current important cornerstones of the ballet world are basically and definitely radiations from their efforts.
  9. Thank you for the info, Lion..! It is always nice to read reports from lesser known events/dancers around the world.. Merci bien!
  10. Great idea. Something similar should had been done for Tallchief.

    Giselle?

I thought, that could be harder for Osipova-Giselle's jumping to match the music, if music is played slower. ...... I might be wrong. I have never danced Giselle. I like the slow motion from 4:20 - 5:00 very much. Albrecht was swaying Giselle a little bit, then carrying her two steps further down. Very beautiful and full of emotion! In some Giselle performances, I saw Albrecht just liftting Giselle and putting her down, I would cry out in my head: hey, Giselle is not a box! Well...thing is-(and I would love to be corrected here by doug)-that older versions, which were probably closer to the turn of the century Russian stagings, usually have Albrecht lifting Giselle while she stays in a stiff arabesque position. The "swaying" motion seems to have been added in more modern productions. Also...didn't Dolin say in "A portrait of Giselle" that those lifts hadn't always been a part of the standard stagings...? Or something like he didn't used them with Markova...?
  12. Wow...Markova's extended pointed feet looks GORGEUS!

    Giselle?

In this scene the music sounds very slow. Slower than "normal", isn't it? The PDD tempo has become very slow with time-(one would had to know what clue is given from period manuscripts of the score or "authorized" transcriptions.). In any case, this could had been the result of the ballerina, conductor or stager's preference. I particularly don't care too much for an extra laaaaaaaaaaaargo tempo here...

    Giselle?

I think so too. Iconic moments with Osipova's Giselle. Act I. Pas Seul. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=omqyVhJqozk Act I . Scene de Folie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_Dz3zgarUM Act II. Apparition de Giselle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzdOBx_cRvE Act II. Adagio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSnivcjR_Do

    Giselle?

To the OP, GO see this grand gem of Romantic style. The music is as catching as it can gets and very easy on the ears. Although I have my reservations on how the Russians treat it,-(very much preferring the general feeling of those stagings that have derived from the turn of the century productions staged by N. Sergueev and subsequently by some of its early dancers)- I assure you... you will love it.
  16. I went to se this last night. It is an indie, independent product of film maker Lucy Mulloy. "Trapped in the nervous desperation of Havana, Raul dreams of escaping to Miami. When accused of assault, his only option is to flee. He begs his best friend, Elio, to abandon everything and help him reach the forbidden land 90 miles across the ocean. Elio’s commitment is tested when he is torn between helping Raul escape and protecting his twin sister, Lila. Brimming with the nervous energy of Havana’s restless youth in the crumbling sun-bleached capital, Una Noche follows one sweltering day, full of hope and fraught with tension, that burns to a shocking climax..." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKLXDk4NFrA
  17. It could be that I usually tend to do that...always trying to "see" the beyond...to identify signs within the big picture. It all has been too recently, and I'm one that sustains that the Bolshoi will never be the same after this. By now we all know Fillin's episode is just not the result of an isolated, crazied act of one man, but rather the explosion of a very complex and tiring situation that is just beginning to overflow. For me enjoying a ballet performance involves many aspects..one of them being able to feel a certain cohesion, camaraderie, JOY onstage that is just generated within a proper environment. Alonso's and Villella's company has that, and it is PALPABLE onstage. The Bolshoi-(with its ample range of hyper extensions, uber flexible backs and military corps)- didn't give me that.
  18. Not on any account could I do that. It never crossed my mind either. Hard to stop a thought once it pushes to cross my mind. And that the drama didn't stop then and there with the arrest...? And that there's a rotten, way deeper ongoing turmoil at the moment, right now, even within the current roster perhaps..? Not difficult at all to imagine.
  19. And all along with the 1812 Overture as a musical background. Russian victory! She's very beautiful though...
