  2. Here is a link to Dale's interview with Alexei Ratmansky for danceviewtimes with a great intro.
  3. For music, it happens on a regular basis when there's a guest soloist with the symphony, for Visiting Orchestras, and for at least some of the pianists in the President's Piano Series. For dance, just about everything in World Dance seems to get one, with lots of hooting and whistles, and often at On The Boards.I believe that the recent symphony performances with Rostropovich deserved it, but even he had put an end to it. To get the symphony off stage, instead of going offstage by himself again, he started the Rostropovich Conga Line, where he grabbed the concertmaster and the next nearest musician and proceeded down the opening to backstage, while the musician at the end of the line grabbed another, until the first violins had made their exit.
  4. Many thanks for the links, Nashota! I searched and searched for sites in Spain that might carry the CD, but never found them. As an FYI to anyone else who is interested in ordering off of one of these sites, Zambra offers credit card and PayPal. (The PayPal screens are in Spanish ). Servifans offers credit cards (Amex, Visa, MC). The price from Zambra is $33.34 USD, at least at the current exchange rate of 18.000+8.34 S/H (to US)=26.34 Euros. The price from Servifans is 18.99+12.99 S/H (to US) Euros if you want it in a case or 18.99+8.75 S/H (to US) Euros if you want them to ship without case. (The site didn't say if the booklet comes with the second option.) The sales site prices it at "18.99 Euros ($18.99 (Dólares americanos)" -- it's been a few years since the exchange rate has been that good.
  5. I'm glad the PNB shop is still trying -- it's nearly impossible to find -- not even a copy on eBay -- and I was afraid the 1990 CD went out of print. It isn't available through iTunes or MSN Music for download, either.
  6. There were three videos (VHS) released on Balanchine technique, and one was "Balanchine Essays: Port De Bras & Epaulement." I've never seen the tape. Is there anyone who has and can tell us if Suki Shorer discusses the hands and wrists in port de bras? Sadly, it's not available on amazon.com, nor on the Barnes and Noble or NYCB sites, which are the three references given on The Balanchine Foundation site.
  7. Yes, these are the songs from the three ballets, all of which appear on the album Coreografies:Jardi Tancat Cancó de collir olives Cancó d'Esterrossar Fora D'ES Sembrat Tonda De Treure Aigo Cancó de Na Ruixa Mantells Cor Perdut Bri-Demet-Yasemen Arenal Tonades De Segar Carta a l'exili Tonda de Collir Olivws Dansa De La Primavera Cancó de Bressol Des De Mallorca A L'alguer Den Itan Nisi The song "Jardi Tancat" isn't in any of the three dances, but was used for the title of the one work. Maria del Mar Bonet recorded it on the albums Jardi Tancat and Raixa. Raixa is a wonderful album nonetheless. It is a recording of a live concert from the Greek Festival in Barcelona. I was in Barcelona in 2002 and was able to buy it at Fnac.

  12. The music was released commercially in Europe on an album called "Coreografies," and it included the music for Jardi Tancat, Arenal, and Cor Perdut. The only site I found to order it is in Japanese, and the disc costs 3200 Yen (BMG ARIOLA EURODISC CD9A - 261214) ~ $28 before shipping. http://www.gardenshedcd.com/spain/index.html Here is a link to the lyrics on the album in Catala: http://www.bonet.amics.ppcc.8m.net/coreografies.html There is another Japanese with an English version that sells the LP, not the DVD, and lists a top condition second-hand disk for $69.00 US. http://www.record-eurasia.com/Eng/E-eurasiahome.html page with album listed: http://www.record-eurasia.com/Eng/listvocale.html del Mar Bonet also release an album called Jardi Tancat, but the only song from the dance by the same name is the last song, "Cançó de na Ruixa Mantells." Sadly, it was never carried by the PNB gift shop. Pacific Northwest Ballet has performed Jardi Tancat regularly. It has not been released on DVD.
  13. That's such an interesting statement, bart. I've attended a number of performances at On The Boards, which is the venue for contemporary performance in Seattle. Seattle audiences have a tendency to stand, particularly when supporters are in the audience, but along with the stomping and clapping are the looks and whispers of "Did you understand that? What did that mean?" I have to admit that whenever I'm asked to "Blog the Boards," -- i.e. give a mini-review on the OtB blog website -- I'm in a basic panic, terrified that I'll have no idea how to interpret what I've just seen, and I don't calm down until I feel like I've got a least a mini-clue and a conviction that what I've seen is It or not. That's never a worry when I go to the ballet, however contemporary.
  14. From yesterday's links, a very nice tribute to Possokhov. An excerpt:

  19. Junk mail/spam filters change regularly. I started to check my spam folder on a regular basis after the first time mail I sent to myself ended up in it.
  20. I didn't see Tan the season Sylvia was created, but I did see Miner, and she was superb.
  21. singing_medora kindly posted that the Belorussian Ballet site is now available in English. I've moved the link to a new thread, called Belorussian Ballet Website in English for comments and discussion.
  22. And I thought The Unanswered Question was Balanchine's Ives ballet I've never seen Intermezzo, and I hope to read reviews about it here.
  23. Thank you for the heads about about children attending the matinees. With that many children in the production, they usually have friends and relatives in the audience. PNB is performing Sleeping Beauty now, and there were a lot more children in the audience. It does make a significant difference.
  24. Thank you, lillianna, for your review! I used to see Julie Diana perform with San Francisco Ballet, and I miss her. I'm glad she's gracing the stage in Philadelphia.
