  7. [ADMIN BEANIE ON] Ballet Talk is a discussion board, and neither a fan board, nor despite the presence of company forums, a board that supports any company or administration. Statements by members of the ballet community that are from official sources -- published or spoken -- are acceptable discussion points, and criticism by Ballet Talk members is always welcome, as long as it is well-reasoned and follows the courtesy rules spelled out in our Rules and Policies. We do not stifle debate that follows this policy. [ADMIN BEANIE OFF]
  8. Welcome to Ballet Talk, evoui. We are a discussion board in which we talk mainly about issues in ballet and performances, as well as ballets, ballet history, and music. I would suggest using the "Search" feature from the top of the page to search on "Petipa," which will bring up topics in which Petipa was named. In addition, Google, MSN, and Yahoo have search engines in which you can search the Internet for "Marius Petipa" and "Petipa." Google support Greek, and you may be able to find articles in ballet in Greek. For example, using MSN, I found a link to the following short bio of Petipa from the Ballet Met website: http://www.balletmet.org/Notes/Petipa.html Good luck with your project.
  9. I'm not sure Suzanne Farrell Ballet is a pick-up company, though. At this point Farrell has a core of dancers who perform season after season after their longer seasons with permanent companies end. I would call it a seasonal company, similar to Peter Boal and Company's fairly stable roster.
  10. But still "a strong, lively regional company." At the end of Koulas' article, she notes that Körbes will be dancing the lead in Diamonds next month. While I have no doubt she will be luminous in the role, I'm a bit sad that it's not Verdy's role in Emeralds, after the praise Verdy gave her after her coaching session with Körbes. But Kourlas is right: it's worth the plane fare to see her. She is a Ballerina in the best sense of the word.

  16. I don't remember any goats, but there are some satyrs.
  17. I don't know the DC area that well, but are there outlying places to stay on the Metro line in Maryland or Virginia that would make the trip more affordable?
  18. Thank you so much for posting this. At home, where I run Firefox on my Mac, I've been going into the Windows simulator, which is soooooo sloooooooowwwwww. This is so much faster, and I don't have to use the annoying little scroll thingy. Or why a 30+ million dollar a year org has a website that doesn't use standard navigation?
  19. Morris has many things going for him: he was schooled not only in ballet, but in modern, Flamenco and other types of ethnic dance, and unlike many other choreographers and artistic directors, understands the difference between ballet and other genres. He also has choreographed what are in my opinion, two of the best ballets since the death of Balanchine, both for San Francisco Ballet: Maelstrom, to Beethoven's "Ghost" Trio, and the full-length Sylvia, currently playing at SFB. (I've never seen Gong or Pacific, which gets its PNB premiere next season.) By contrast, I wouldn't include any of the Martins ballets I've seen among the best of the last several decades, although there are a few in the last decade I wish I had a chance to see. (An edited Schubertiade might have made this list.) I always thought the purpose of the American Music Festival and Diamond Projects was to seek out current choreographers to stretch the repertoire and to challenge the dancers, stylistically and artistically.

  23. Mary Murfin Bayley's interview with Mark Morris was published yesterday and in that regional newspaper The Seattle Times, so Rockwell didn't have a chance to address one more critic of Martins:
  24. The Alexandra Ballet Newsletter "Alumni News" section seems to be the place to get updates on Ms. Peppin. According to the Fall 2005 Newsletter (page 6) *Miss A is Alexandra Zaharias, Artistic Director of Alexandra Ballet. On page 3 of the August 2003 Newsletter, there's a photo of her demonstrating a Pilates machine to Prince Charles. (These are links to Adobe .pdf files.)
