  6. I was lucky to have seen Makarova and Nagy at my second live ballet performance. Bart describes Nagy perfectly: Is that the same Yuri Possokhov who is retiring from San Francisco Ballet this summer, during the New York tour?
  7. Welcome to Ballet Talk, sophie benjamin. Our mission is to discuss ballet from the point of view of those of us in front of the curtain: performances, issues, ballet history and music, etc. like you did on the Giselle thread. It sounds like you also want to discuss ballet as a performer. We have a sister board, Ballet Talk for Dancers. (It requires separate registration.) You should find like-minded dancers there. Since this is a topic that is more appropriate for BT4D, I'm going to close this thread. (Unfortunately, we can't move topics from one board to the other.)
  8. Welcome to Ballet Talk, Katrina! We're glad you decided to join our discussions. Please feel free to introduce yourself on our Welcome Forum by clicking the "New Topic" button in the upper right part of the site.
  9. In Links today, there was an article in The Australian reporting on Madeleine Eastoe's recent promotion to Principal Dancer at Australian Ballet. The Company managed to keep the promotion a surprise from everyone except her parents, who were only given a hint, until it was announced on the stage of the Sydney Opera House after her debut as Giselle. Congratulations to Eastoe, a physically small dancer who dances huge.

  17. Wow, it's good to know that I can check a suitcase in the Opera House. (If Covent Garden officials want to rummage through my literally dirty laundry, they're welcome to.) I missed Sophie's Choice a few trips ago, because my plane from Dublin left hours late, and I assumed I'd have to go to the hotel to drop off my luggage, post 9/11.

  22. Many thanks, flipsy for your review. Sad about the intrusion into the original intent of Tiernan/Pierce duet.
  23. But if you have to leave one for the ballerina to give to her partner, that means she either has to start with an even number and end with an odd, or she has to start with an odd, and after giving one away, end up with an even number. Is it better to give away the even to end with odd, or is this a case of no good deed going unpunished?
  24. dirac. If you search on "Robert Greskovic" among the access you'll be given are reviews of ABT's Sylvia, Ratmansky's The Bright Stream, and NYCB at Saratoga Springs. All paths don't run smooth -- the first article to come up when I clicked the link was Barrymore Laurence Scherer's article on the Emerson String Quartet's recordings of the Shostakovich String Quartets ("You Don't Have to Be Russian To Play Shostakovich") I take issue with Mr. Scherer's assertion that "Until comparatively recently Shostakovich's quartets were best known through the Soviet recordings by the Beethoven and Borodin quartets, whose members were colleagues and friends of the composer." The Fitzwilliam String Quartet from Cambridge did a highly publicized and award-winning complete recording of the quartets in 1977, not only winning a Gramophone Award for Chamber Music that year for quartets 4 and 12, but also included in the magazine's "100 Greatest Recordings" list. They performed the full cycle in NYC in the early 80's, to much acclaim. But I digress . Go straight to Robert Greskovic's dance reviews!
  25. oberon has a blog, called oberon's grove, which contains not only ballet and dance reviews, but opera reviews as well, including a recent review of Klaus Florian Vogt's performance as Lohengrin at the Met.
