  1. Italian and Spanish are white/European.
  2. I believe Irina said that she saw the cast list go up and she wasn't cast. At all. So she made the choice to retire.
  3. Also depends on the modern dance company. Paul Taylor dancers (especially the male ones) tended to look like underwear models.
  4. Here is an instagram post by Adrian Danchig-Waring which sheds some light on the hair craze at NYCBallet: "Big hair gets you roles."
  5. I saw Summerspace at the Joyce in April when Ballet West did it. There's also an excellent video of the Lyon Ballet company doing it. It's one of Merce's most accessible works. I personally love the costumes, decor and music. I also thought Sara Mearns was magnificent in PC #2 last night.
  6. Bouder was out of tonight's Serenade kn a last minute switch out with Pereira.
  7. I think Woodward and Phelan will be promoted along with Harrison Ball. And Roman Mejia to soloist.
  8. Ballet career trajectories are really the most consistent with that of professional athletes. In professional sports even the very greatest and hardiest are felled by injuries by the late-30's/early-40's.
  9. I think with the final act of revenge the action makes more sense -- Nikya has "l'amour fou" and is willing to do anything because of her love of Solor, just as Gamzatti is. I also think that in the time this story would have taken place pledges of love were taken much more seriously. It often meant a woman lost her virginity. (Most Puritans who married were often pregnant -- a betrothal pledge was that serious that "intimate relations" could begin.) So that's why Giselle dies of a broken heart and Nikya is willing to stab her rival -- back then love pledges were really serious business.
  10. A ballet company's instagram is usually run by the dancers or the marketing team. They're not going to answer questions like that on instagram, which is essentially a self promotion for the company. If you write to the company you'd be surprised -- many of them write back. Also how general was your question? It's kind of hard to answer "How are you dealing with racism in ballet?" in a brief social media answer.
  11. I imagine this means he will dance with ABT even less, if that's even possible. https://www.roh.org.uk/news/david-hallberg-returns-to-the-royal-ballet-as-principal-guest-artist
  12. She's been out since last spring with a herniated disc.
  13. Lauren King has all but disappeared from casting this fall season. She did Emeralds but otherwise nothing.
  14. Update: Huxley out of all ballets this week.
  15. Anyone at the spring gala? how were the Liang and Lovette works?
  16. I wrote a little requiem on Domingo's career: https://humbledandoverwhelmed.blogspot.com/2019/09/curtains-on-domingo.html
  17. I noticed there was a lot of shoe squeaking in the corps yesterday for both Emeralds and Diamonds. Maybe it's a rosin they're putting on their pointe shoes to avoid slipping?
  18. Due to a series of unfortunate events I was only able to make it to one Jewels this season(yesterday afternoon's) but I thought Unity Phelan was absolutely divine as the Walking Girl in Emeralds and the whole Rubies cast was great, with Emily Kikta dazzling as the Tall Girl and Sterling Hyltin really flirty and fun in the Patricia McBride role. I was a little disappointed in the Kowroski/Angle Diamonds. I thought Maria was good but she wasn't nearly as good as the Diamonds I saw her do this past spring. She just seemed a little more careful.
  19. Ok one thing about those videos is that right now from what I can see Brandt projects a very hearty, healthy village lass. I'm less convinced about clips of her in the second act.
  20. Eh it doesn't bother me. She;s putting herself out there and TPTB are free to look at it and either think it merits a Giselle or doesn't merit a Giselle. I more have a problem with dancers' social medias when it becomes an infomercial for dancewear, sneakers, and other products. There's a NYCB ballerina that I admire greatly as a dancer but who I unfollowed on social media because it wasn't anything other than promotions for her line of clothing.
  21. She mentioned being in the ICU a few weeks ago so they might have let her rest for the first two weeks of the season.
  22. Oh no! Reichlen is my favorite Diamonds.
  23. I'd say overall it's the weakest cast. Not that it isn't good. But Mukhamedov and Watson were just so much more intense. The female roles are good in all three videos but this is Rudolf's ballet.
  24. Week 1 casting: https://www.nycballet.com/NYCB/media/NYCBMediaLibrary/PDFs/Press/Casting/NYCB-Casting_September-17-22-2019.pdf
  25. The history of the Firebird via costume. Note: I mix the Fokine and Balanchine versions because they are so clearly derived from the same DNA. Tamara Karsavina's original feathery concoction: Irina Baronova's shorter bell-shaped tutu: Margot Fonteyn's pancake tutu: Maria Tallchief's powder puff tutu: Gelsey Kirkland's return to a semblance of the feathery Karsavina concoction: Teresa Reichlen's return to the red powder puff, although with a longer skirt and less puff: Meanwhile at the Mariinsky the Firebird with the pancake tutu: Although at the Bolshoi they go for more of a platter tutu:
