  1. I have appreciated tributes to the deceased from COVID-19 that I see regularly on cable news: bus drivers, nurses, doctors, food service workers, teachers, prison guards, all ages/genders/races, on and on. I just saw a notice that a senior administrator at CUNY died of this disease. I don't know how we "shelter" all those people.
  2. Free streaming of the joint performance by Colorado Ballet and Cleo Parker Robinson company of The MOVEment. Available for two weeks: https://www.coloradoballet.org/presents
  3. Don't miss this Manon -- what a treat to see Alina Cojocaru. Also nice to see Jeffrey Cirio as Lescaut. Only available for 48 hours, as noted above. The sets and costumes are from the Royal Danish Ballet. The minimalist set works but I don't care for those costumes -- the gauzy tulle layers remind me of cheap school recital tutus in catalogs. Otherwise, a splendid production. There's also a 2-minute interview on their site with Cojocaru talking about the role which is worth looking at.
  4. Friends in Canada are telling me that the world is watching in horror at the US's mismanagement of this pandemic. So much of the KenCen season is international, I have to think they're going to wait and see if we get to a point where it's safe to visit. That might be a long while, alas!
  5. I remember some news reports that he and his brother had trouble returning to the US from Russia because of the pandemic, but were finally able to get flights to Montana, their home. I wonder if he had even less financial security in Russia than he might expect here. I have not seen any reports about unemployment or other benefits for the Russian dancers laid off with this disease. Anybody know how that works?
  6. Obituary in this morning's New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/21/arts/dance/sally-banes-dead.html
  7. When others receive their PA Ballet message Saturday, could you please post (and your time zone)? Nothing yet as of 4 pm MDT.
  8. I heard back right away by email. I'm on the list for tonight and they'll be sending things out to everybody later this afternoon. Thanks!
  9. Am I the only person who hasn't received the Pennsylvania Ballet access password? I registered Friday morning, again Friday before the performance, and just now. I have bought many tickets. I have made significant donations the last three years. I think something is seriously screwed up in their system. I just sent e-mail to the two people who seem to handle individual donors/members. And yes, I have been checking my spam and trash files. Anybody else having the same problem?
  10. There are a lot of nifty web sites that let you hear proper pronunciation of foreign languages. Start with Google: Greek pronunciation I like this one: https://forvo.com/languages/el/
  11. I haven't received anything yet and I'm a donor and past ticket buyer. Maybe they're doing this in alphabetical order!
  12. I had the same disappointment. Their overlapping schedules are normally a big attraction for out-of-towners like me. The new "normal," I guess.
  13. As I'm sure many of you did, I got a detailed questionnaire today from NYCB asking about prices I'd be willing to pay for different offerings -- performances, talks, interviews, classes, etc. I suspect we'll be seeing more of this.
  14. Colorado Ballet will stream a work performed jointly with Cleo Robinson's company in March 2019. It will be on their web site beginning June 24 for two weeks. I saw this in the theater and it's a stunning tribute to the Civil Rights Movement. I'm very glad to see this scheduled. EDITED TO ADD: They now have a special web page with more information: https://www.coloradoballet.org/presents Colorado Ballet Presents: The MOVE/ment by Cleo Parker Robinson. We are excited to stream this work for two weeks on our website beginning on Wednesday, June 24! Colorado Ballet had an amazing experience collaborating with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance in 2019 to create and perform The MOVE/ment, a powerful and moving work about the Civil Rights Movement. Hear from Cleo Parker Robinson and some of the dancers later this week about what this piece means to them and why it is so relevant today. #CPRD #ColoradoBallet Cover image features Tyveze Littlejohn of Cleo Parker Robinson Dance
  15. I haven't received anything, but as the performances start tomorrow, it would make sense to wait to send it out tomorrow. Fun fact: the first American to perform Giselle is buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. They were one of the sponsors of the theater performance, which I was able to see and really enjoyed. https://thelaurelhillcemetery.org/events/featured-performances-by-the-pennsylvania-ballet
  16. I watched this several times on her Instagram feed this morning. We're sure it's not trick editing?
  17. Germany must be doing something right if three theaters expect to open in August! Here's their calendar: https://www.staatsballett-berlin.de/en/spielplan/18-6-2020/kalender from Twitter: After weeks of planning, we can finally announce an updated version of our 20/21 season! In Aug and Sep, we'll be back on stages of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden! We're looking forward to seeing you! http://staatsballett-berlin.de
  18. Now THAT is a show I'd happily pay extra to see next year!
  19. Tributes to Sally Banes: Wendy Perron: http://wendyperron.com/sally-banes-1950-2020/ Deborah Jowitt: https://www.artsjournal.com/dancebeat/2020/06/in-memoriam-sally-banes-1950-2020/
  20. City and state governments in the US are in desperate straits financially. Expect many more cuts in programs considered "expendable." The NEA/NEH funding is so miniscule, we hope they survive but they don't have the resources to bail out arts and higher education.
  21. I'm confused. If the people now are worried about the matchstick look of Coppelia, it's consistent with Robbins' complaint about it in 1978. So they are only going to give us Act III. Is the June 29 show still on? I hope so! Very hard to keep up! It's not on the Lincoln Center page anymore. Here's the page I bookmarked for June 29 -- but I can't find it elsewhere: http://lincolncenter.org/lincoln-center-at-home/show/tribute-to-balanchine-1983-926
  22. I remember Robbin being so appalled at the TV broadcast of Coppelia that he soured on having his own work shown on TV if filmed in the theater. His "Live from Studio 8H" (1980?) was a studio presentation, not in the theater.
  23. What's really frustrating: The Balanchine Celebration originally scheduled for June 29 was to include: three of Balanchine’s ballets. Vienna Waltzes features dancers Kyra Nichols and Sean Lavery, Heather Watts and Helgi Tomasson, Elyse Borne and Bart Cook, Karin von Aroldingen and Peter Martins, and Suzanne Farrell and Adam Lüders. Mozartiana, set to music by Peter Ilyitch Tschaikovsky, is led by Suzanne Farrell, Victor Castelli, and Ib Andersen. Who Cares?,
  24. I've been wondering, for all of these retiring principals: they won't be able to stay in shape for a major role in spring 2021, but I wonder if they could return for a cameo role (the mother or queen in something?) and then get the applause/flowers/partners at the end. Why not? Our world is upside-down and a little more innovation next spring would be welcome!
