Spring 2015

Recommended Posts

I,too,am both excited and surprised at this news. I'd kind of given up hope I'd ever see Somogyi dance again. Good for her!

I love Adrian D-W and am so excited to see him in Apollo (I'm going the 29th). I just assumed Chase would do all the Apollo roles. I hope he is ok, given he didn't go on the DC tour.

I'm a little disappointed not to see Huxley doing Square Dance again with Bouder. I thought he was fantastic in it this winter. I'm happy to see he's doing Duo Concertant with Bouder, though. The fact is that Stanley (who is doing Square Dance) is also a great dancer.. I wonder if one (or both) of them will get promoted this Spring.

I assumed we would never see Somogyi on stage again. Also happy for Scheller that's she's finally back.

I'm also wondering about Finlay. He got injured on the next to last day of the winter seaosn during R&J, and the fact that he was not on the DC tour and is not cast in one of his signature roles leads me to worry.

added: Bet you that Russell Janzen will be second cast of Apollo with a tall girl cast of muses. Hope my prediction is correct. Janzen seems perfect for the role.

What about Catazaro? Sooner or later, wouldn't you think? And I've always wanted to see Craig Hall in the role, but I guess that doesn't seem likely.

I agree Russell Janzen seems perfect for Apollo. I also think Zachary Catazaro would be fantastic. I'd be there to see Craig Hall too. Lots of good choices!

In addition to Chase Finlay, I notice the following missing from the casting sheet: Abi Stafford, Ashley Laracey, and Joaquin de Luz.

I saw Craig Hall as Apollo. It was too long ago for me to recall whether I liked it. In any event, the Dancers Choice program casting is not indicative of what Martins will do. It's the dancers who are in charge of the Dancers Choice casting. If Martins had ever intended to cast Hall, he would have done it already, I believe.

Fully agree w/ you re: Janzen for Apollo. Besides, he's also a really nice guy (have met him)

Does anyone understand the ticket availability and pricing? I went to the site to look for tickets. Some dates have no 3rd or 4th ring available. Some dates say something like 12 tickets available in 4th ring (all horrible seats). Some dates gave crazy numbers as far as available seats. I am tempted to take my chances and go to the David Rubenstein atruim for day of discount seats to see what's available. Don't live far so it's not a problem in terms of plans. Any thoughts?

Yes, I was surprised that certain dates had so few orchestra tickets available. But I didn't look up at the rings. If something looks strange, I'd suggest calling the box office at 212-496-0600. I've always found the NYCB ticket agents to be quite knowledgeable and helpful.

ETA: I took a quick look at the first week. Since no seats are available at all in the 4th ring I assume it's closed. However, there were quite a few seats available in the 3rd ring.

There's a new video up on the NYCB website (homepage) regarding La Sylphide. It features Andy Veyette and Sterling Hyltin. There is no dancing. Mostly it features Veyette hearing noises in a big, creaky house and getting glimpses of Hyltin. Every time he chases her she vanishes. Spooky music added in the background for good measure. laugh.png I guess it wasn't intended to be funny, but I got a laugh out of it. Way too over the top. How about showing us some dancing!

Thanks for the advise Amour. I did call the box office and got some tickets but was told that certain sections were not available for certain dates. I looked online this evening and saw that sections had opened up for some performances. A La Sylphide date that had 0 tickets in 3rd or 4th ring 2 days ago suddenly has a bunch in 3rd ring and some in 4th ring. I think this is part of their pricing/seating plan. It must be working for them or they wouldn't be doing it.

Several weeks ago I was in a hurry and ordered what I thought was a matinee performance in the 3rd ring for the May 16 La Sylphide. Later when I checked my confirmation I saw that I ordered the evening performance (either that or the site bumped me to the evening because 3rd ring was not open yet for the matinee). Like vipa I noticed that yesterday 3rd ring was opened for the matinee (no 4th ring yet) and I was able to get the seat I wanted. Long way to say I can't use the evening ticket because I have to get back home for work. If anyone here is interested in the ticket, please pm me. The ticket is 3rd ring, seat A17 on the left for $59. Thanks!

I'm surprised that they have to discount the La Sylphide tixs on Goldstar. I would have assumed that a "full length" ballet which is new to NYCB would sell. I know it's Memorial Day weekend, but I still find it surprising. I guess that's why ABT doesn't revive La Sylphide too often. I was also quite surprised at how poorly Harlequinade sold at NYCB in the winter. I guess we can chalk those difficulties up to the harsh winter, but I think at some point someone at NYCB will have to take a step back from the rhetoric and the excuses and evaluate ticket sales, pricing and the effect of the closure of the 3rd and 4th rings on sales.

On a separate note, the lobby renovations at the Koch have been completed. Wondering what others think. To me, the new look feels more like a hospital emergency room intake area, with it's stark white modernity, than a grand theater lobby. Moreover, the design is incongrous with the beautiful marble in the rest of the lobby area.

When I went there on my unsuccessful foray to exchange my Royal Ballet tickets I was surprised to see the box office straight ahead as you enter. Now that you mention it, abatt, it was very modern. I never thought the entry area was much to look anyway at until you go up to the promenade level.

Casting up week 3. They seem to be getting the casting online a bit earlier this season. Many debuts! Exciting! Comments?

Thanks for the heads up cobweb. I'm so happy that I'll be seeing Bouder & Veyette in La Sylphide. Also pleased to be able to see so many corps members given opportunities in Bournonville. It's really exciting.
