  1. What was the deal with having British athletes parade in to David Bowie’s Heroes? The tone of that song is desperate and wistful and ironic. The heroism there is fantasy. I couldn’t hear the lyrics well last night, but I’m guessing they at least cut out the lines about how “you can be mean and I’ll drink all the time.”
  2. The pianists Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale have a Cooking with Balanchine section in "The Gold and Fizdale Cookbook," and it includes a Salade Olivier, George Balanchine. Here's the ingredient list: cucumber, German-style dill pickle, roast chicken, boiled potatoes, peas, mayonnaise, sour cream, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper, hard-boiled eggs, capers, black and green olives, and tomatoes. They write:
  3. I would think it would be clear to a company’s dancers over time - by everything from number of performances scheduled, to roles given to up-and-coming dancers, to rehearsal time scheduled and enthusiasm shown - just how much the AD values the core rep vs. the new stuff. And I’d think a lot of younger dancers especially would undervalue and under-prioritize the older work if that’s what they saw modeled. I suppose that's only stating the obvious. But while I never saw Villella dance and I’ve only seen MCB a half a dozen times, like bart, I’m deeply grateful to him for how he’s kept Balanchine’s work alive. It’s been heartwarming to read about even when I couldn’t see it.
  4. Respect or culture? I wonder. Perhaps it's honor enough (quoting the phrase Farrell uses) to be "servants of the dance."
  5. Looks good! Was "Heartburn" excerpted anywhere? I vaguely remember reading a bit of it and laughing.
  6. Right, she danced it twice in New York with the Kirov.
  7. Thanks, Kristen, for vicarious thrill. Much enjoyed and appreciated!
  8. I wish I'd seen that. One thing I remember about Part as Terpsichore at the Met in '99 is her grin.
  9. Kathleen Moore made a strong impression as Leto in the mid-90's.
  10. Miami City Ballet danced it alone at Wolf Trap in '92.
  11. Perhaps it's just that I've seen Agon so many times and Episodes only three, but I prefer it as well. And Stravinsky Violin Concerto next to that. All three scores are big favorites. NYCB did not include the Taylor solo when they brought Episodes to the Kennedy Center last year.
  12. Me too. And also seeing Magnicaballi in both Episodes and in Stravinsky Violin Concerto!
  13. Oh, thanks, I forgot Ocean's Kingdom was a one-acter.
  14. How did Ocean's Kingdom sell after its initial run? It would be nice if they saw that bringing in rock stars and their designer daughters isn't the way to sell a lot of tickets either. But I may be dreaming.
  15. Well, the reviews have been mixed although perhaps most often negative. We don't know what Gelb actually thinks of it, but I can't blame him, at least at this early date, for standing up for it. That's his job - it's not as if he can just fix the flaws by acknowledging them. I do agree that banning reviews in Opera News was wrong for a number of reasons.
  16. Congratulations, indeed! The following photo at the photo blog Ballet, Cats and Other Things Taylor maintains with Wendy Whelan is labeled Post Performance Proposal : Janie and Sebastien.
  17. Well that's refreshingly honest and straightforward (from any public figure, I mean).
  18. So I wonder if that will change or if the magazine's readership has just been cut in half. Surely some of those donors will subscribe on their own if need be, but I would imagine that Met coverage is the main reason a lot of other people subscribe, so this has to hurt the magazine a lot. I don't support Gelb's move, but I can understand him not wanting his donors reading bad reviews.
  19. I saw the all HD broadcasts for this Ring, and after seeing Wagner's Dream tonight I'm especially sorry that I have a social obligation next week when they're showing Das Rheingold here again to kick off the HD cycle. The courage of those Rhinemaidens!
  20. I agree. I remember Glass Pieces and Carousel at the KC not too long ago as well, and while I love the first and like the second, it's not like the company doesn't have a huge rep to choose from. I don't think they've done the three Tchaikovsky ballets here since they began coming again about 10 (?) years ago.
  21. How many people knew that Darla Hoover co-choreographed Allegro Brilliante? Or that Maria Calegari helped choreograph Mozartiana? Ugh. Thanks for the news release, Dale, but that was a waste of two bucks.
  22. I love your thoughtful and detailed reviews, emilienne. But I'm surprised you think of Holowchuk as introverted. Did you see her in Ragtime (click on the 2nd and 6th images)? She had a playfulness there that to my mind would translate very well to Rubies.
  23. Whoops, of course! Thanks, and I hope Farrell stages this some day.
  24. Thanks, Jack. I would have especially loved seeing Holowchuk's second Rubies. Was the tempo still a little slow?
