  1. They probably had one rehearsal together and Stearns and Gorak are way different in height, so it's a bigger jump for her. With the difficulty of that pas, it's not easy to just switch up partners at the last minute. I realize that Gillian did it with Marcelo, but she is more seasoned and has danced a lot with Marcelo before.
  2. It's a dead lift that Marcelo has to perform. She can offer no help. That's difficult and Veronica is long-limbed and not the tiniest of dancers. Once she's up there, the ballerina is responsible for holding herself. Additionally, in the Colorado Ballet choreo, the male dancer takes about five steps. Marcelo has to cover the length of the room with her in the air.
  3. I am just curious. How is a ballerina supposed to act or "present themselves" outside of work?
  4. Hoping she will be back the second week! She's a beautiful performer. Hoping to see her in NYC.
  5. Yes, thank you. Was referring to Emergence. Thanks for the info. I will have to get there for that program!
  6. This is one ballet I really wish to see. I am a big fan of her work, but have never seen it in person. Lucky PNB fans.
  7. I saw several of the shows. I found the ballet somewhat pretentious and it did not make me a fan of Neumeier either. However, I applaud Boston for their undertaking of this production and for choosing to stretch their boundaries. (I recently watched several of ABT's shows and I was disappointed in the fact that they are "American Ballet Theatre" and yet so much of what they did in their rep program seemed outdated.) Anyway, just a few comments to your analysis, Caesariatus. Lasha K. had to dance the majority of the principal roles in the run. The other person cast in the role got sick during the second week of the run. Therefore, you were seeing him on his fourth run of that in one weekend. It's quite a feat to dance that role and four shows in a row could not have been easy. The secondary role was danced by Irlan who has done quite well in this run. Hopefully, he is rising to the occasion to take Jeff Cirio's place. I agree that Dusty did well in this piece. But it was the only role she danced, so she was at an advantage compared to many of the other women. The first movement with all male dancers was impressive, but I must say I think it did drag on a bit ... nearly 35-40 minutes I believe. The rest seemed to move along more quickly. As a side note, we are probably in the minority in terms of our opinion of this production. Most of the reviews were positive and the shows were sold very, very well. What I do love about attending Boston Ballet productions is the varied audience members. They attract all ages to their shows. I remarked to my husband this summer at Jacob's Pillow and at the several shows we saw in NYC of ABT that companies need to start doing something to attract younger audience members. Boston has done that. And it's not due to any one star such as Misty Copeland. It's due to their programming.
  8. In case you missed it, here it is. http://www.ew.com/article/2015/10/20/misty-copeland-jimmy-kimmel-ballet
  9. Interesting topic: http://dancemagazine.com/views/does-nycb-have-a-gambling-problem/
  10. Thanks for saying that, Helene. I know Aldrich personally and she is very happy with her decision.
  11. It appears from Rosalie O'Connor's facebook page that Johan Renvall has passed away: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153028497382633&set=a.10151010875862633.404856.630757632&type=1&theater Beautiful youtube of him:
  12. She will be greatly missed. She was a very kind woman with a heart for ballet and a heart for young people who wanted to dance. If anyone is interested, there is a fund to raise money for the family. https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/g9r9/the-king-family-fund?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=fb_feed&utm_campaign=php_fundraiser_main-fraggles&og_action=hug&fb_ref=feed-fraggles&t=3
  13. I think I found it: "Each year, the Foundation presents the Princess Grace Awards to artists who show excellence and promise in the areas of theater, dance, and film. Students are eligible for scholarships; emerging artists working in companies qualify for apprenticeships and fellowships. A playwriting fellowship is available for individual artists through a residency at New Dramatists in New York City, which includes the opportunity to have the winning play be licensed and published by Samuel French, Inc. In addition to these, the Foundation also gives honorable mention grants to applicants through Honoraria."
  14. bingham - What's the difference between an Princess Grace honorarium and a Princess Grace fellowship? Fellowships are used directly for salary, I think.
  15. Lots of exciting dance in Massachusetts over the next few weeks: Jacob's Pillow will feature Daniil Simkin's Intensio this week - 7/22/-7/26 - featuring fellow dancers from ABT. http://www.jacobspillow.org/festival/2015/07/daniil-simkins-intensio/ The following week the Pillow will host with fellow dancers from NYCB and dancers from Boston Ballet. http://www.jacobspillow.org/festival/2015/07/daniel-ulbricht-stars-of-american-ballet/ Also, this week, two festivals take place, one in Nantucket and one on the Cape. It appears as though both have a series of outreaches and performances: The Nantucket Dance Festival is directed by Tyler Angle and will feature dancers New York City Ballet, ABT and Miami City. http://www.nantucketatheneum.org/july-24-28/ The Cape Dance Festival, directed by Stacey-Jo Marine (Director of Production/Martha Graham), will feature a varied group of dancers, including Cirio Collective (Boston Ballet dancers) and former ABT dancers, Anna Liceica and Vitali Krauchenka. http://capedancefestival.com/performers/
  16. WGBH's Jared Bowen interviews Jeffrey and Lia Cirio about their new venture, "The Cirio Collective." It's the first few minutes of the show. http://www.wgbh.org/programs/Open-Studio-With-Jared-Bowen-2162#64167
  17. I am sure there will be someone in addition to Boal. Funny thing about many of those parts, I do not believe they would have to ransack their memories. I know the dancers from CPYB and SAB learn those roles by watching early on. Carli Samuelson also did Sugar Plum and Dew Drop. Noelani actually danced Sugar Plum with the late Albert Evans while she was at CPYB. CPYB would often bring in a dancer from NYCB to dance the Cavalier role. There is a picture of them together at the infamous Barn. http://blog.cpyb.org/nutcracker-memories/
  18. Do you know who will be staging this for them? So many of these dancers know Balanchine's Nutcracker. Leta Biasucci did all the major roles (Sugar Plum, Marzipan Lead, Dew Drop) when she was at CPYB. Not sure which roles she did while she was in Oregon. Really excited for the company to be doing Balanchine's version!
  19. This article says, "Staged for ABT by Stacy Caddell..." The JKO pre-professional division just recently performed it. http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/New-Work-by-Mark-Morris-Balanchines-VALSE-FANTAISIE-and-More-Highlight-ABTs-Fall-2015-Season-20150708#
  20. James Whiteside performed "Spectre" while in Boston. As for Valse-Fantasie, Cirio is very familiar with Balanchine work, having trained partially at CPYB and dancing in Boston (where they more frequently do Balanchine work). His first promotion from the corps came right after doing Ballo della Regina with Misa Kuranaga.
  21. According to Melissa Thomas' Facebook page, her husband, Grant DeLong, is leaving the company. That's sad to hear. No mention if where he is going elsewhere or doing something else.
  22. You're welcome, bingham. And I agree!
