Results of Round One Seniors now up on the competition's website:

http://www.moscowballetcompetition.com/en/node/326

Congrats to Brooklyn Mack of The Washington Ballet - the only North American senior to have made it on to Round Two! (Results among juniors, which may include more N.Ams, not yet published.)

I see that several current or past Mariinsky dancers have made it to Rnd 2, including Skorik, Askerov, Cheprasova, A. Popov, and the wonderful recent-Vaganova-graduate Ernest Latipov. Anastasia Limenko is a very beautiful recent-graduate of the Bolshoi's affiliated academy, who has made it on to the next round...as is Alexander Omelchenko, the lad who won the recent 'Russian Ballet Competition' held at the Bolshoi in March 2013, chaired by Grigorovich. The Bolshoi's up-and-coming choryphee Olga Marchenkova is another fave iafter Rnd One. Oksana Bondareva, a star of the Mikhailovsky, is also there (NOTE: Some Russian web sites now reporting that she has dropped out. Hope she's OK.) Watch out for all of these.

Edited to add note about Bondareva's possible/reported withdrawal.

Here is the list of Juniors who've made it to Rnd2:

http://www.moscowbal...com/en/node/310

Several Americans here, including Maria-Theresa Beck, Katherine Higgins, Jennifer Bummer, & Gisele Bethea. Miko Fogarty - a young Californian featured in the First Position documentary - is also here, competing for Sweden (typo?). The Ukrainian Olesya Shaitanova comes with big hopes, as does Russian Alyona Ledyakh, from famous ballet family. Also, I see that Ksenia Rychkova of the Moscow (Bolshoi) Academy is competing in Rnd2; she earned the top prize among females in the recent 'Russian Ballet' competition led by Grigorovich, who also leads the jury here. Unless something surprising happens, she should be a 'shoo-in' for the Jr Ladies Gold Medal. I'd like to think that all have an equal chance, though. smile.png

As someone else posted on the Skorik thread, Skorik/Askerov danced Black Swan pdd in RndOne. It's been much commented-on among Russians that this Mariinsky couple elected to perform the Yuri Grigorovich version of the choreography. Wise political move?

Thanks, bingham! As expected, Rychkova is still in the hunt. Good for the Americans, too! I'm wondering about the seniors?

Mom, I believe that the seniors' cut-off date is 28 or 29. Many wonderful dancers won their sr gold medals around the age of 28 (Maximova, Vasiliev...Antonicheva in Jackson '98, etc.).

Choreography Prizes handed out: http://www.moscowballetcompetition.com/en/node/332

Gold Medal - not awarded

Silver - Oleg Gabyshev (Russia)

Bronze - (tie) Dmitri Zalessky (Belarus) and Marina Akel'kina (Russia)

Four others (all Russian) awarded non-medalist Diplomas. One of the four is Emil Faski, whose Salome was featured in the recent Young Choreographers Workshop at the Mariinsky.

Still waiting for Rnd2 Senior results. I'll be out-of-communics/traveling 'til Thursday so wouldn't mind if others may research/post Rnd2-srs and Final Results. Good luck to all remaining contestants. :)

Quick 'pop-in' to make everyone aware of this lovely YouTube channel with all senior-level performances at the Moscow IBC:

http://www.youtube.com/user/fiordililia2/videos?tag_id=&sort=dd&view=0&shelf_index=0

Example of one such variation (Skorik, rnd 2 - Corsaire solo):

Although senior-level Rnd2 results have not been published in a list format, the IBC's web maintains a 'progress roster' of all competitors, where we can see that both Skorik & Askerov have progressed to the final round, as have other Mariinsky/ex-Mariinsky competitors (Popov, Cheprassova, Latipov). Alas, Mack is among those who did not; neither did Marchenkova of the Bolshoi.

Roster/Matrix - dancer with two little boxes next to his/her name has made it to the Finals:

No press release yet but, as you can see from this roster, the prizes have been awarded:

http://www.moscowballetcompetition.com/en/node/28

The 'big news' among Seniors: Skorik wins the Silver. Timur Askerov GOLD...yes, Gold. Draw your own conclusions. smile.png The only other senior golds awarded in the entire competition were to Russians Oksana Bondareva of the Mikhailovsky (in duets) and to David Zaleev (solos). No female solo senior gold was awarded this year. The other Mariinsky competitors managed only a bronze (Ernest Latipov) and 'diploma' (Alexei Popov). Ex-Mariinsky soloist Cheprassova was not so lucky.

Juniors: American/Swiss Miko Fogarty wins jr gold, sharing the top female prize with Ksenia Rychkova and Elvina Ibraimova (both Russians). Two of the dancers representing the USA are among the 4 girls sharing 3rd prize-jr: Beck and Higgins.

I liked Bondareva very much when she danced with the Mikailovsky in London a couple of months ago. Congratulations to her.

All I know of Mr Askerov is from the recent RT documentary, quite good dancer, nice looks and compared to his girlfriend at least he has a personality. Silver for Skorik? Sorry, wouldn't award her tin.

Mashinka, I keep reading great things about Bondareva. As per the news clip below, her face strongly resembles that of movie star Mila Kunis, IMO. From the Mikahilovsky web: http://www.mikhailovsky.ru/en/theatre/company/ballet_company/oksana_bondareva/

Russian TV filed the following report on the finals and medal-awarding ceremony. Focus on the gold medalists including Askerov (shown at the 3.10 mark). The Bolshoi school's Ksenia Rychkova is the only jr gold-medalist lady seen.

Bondareva made an excellent impression on me a couple of years back dancing in the pas de trois in Swan Lake -- this was at the London Colosseum. Very pleased to hear of her success.

Thanks, bingham. A big bouquet of USA jr medalists!

Here is a clip of David Zaleev, the Russian lad who won the lone senior solo gold medal (first prize). Hailing from Kazan, he is described as 'The New Nureyev' in the Russian TV clip above.

Wow! I bet that Ardani and ABT are trying to obtain his services...hmmmm?

p.s. In reading Russian boards/fora, it appears that many atendees believe that Zaleev should have won the Grand Prix and not 'just' a gold medal. No G-P awarded this year. Rarely given.

Cheprasshova got a Diploma (like Alexei Popov, whom i like from what i've seen), at least something.

I don't agree on Gold for Askerov and Silver for Skorik.

Alas. I will have to vote with my $$$ by not buying tickets to their perfomances.

That stupid matrix is tough to read quickly...so thanks again for pointing out another winner, YID. I feel better for Cheprassova now.

I know what you mean about voting with $$$. Alas, I'm afraid that these medals are just the 'amo' that Fateev needs to promote Timur & Oksana to Principals before the next Kennedy Center season, where they'll likely open the run of Swan Lakes. I guess we'll be saving our $$$ together. (I would see her with another guy but I personally don't care for Timur's shortish-muscular line, short neck, etc.)

I'm drawing away.....

I can only imagine Miko Fogarty's mother right now.

I'm not trying to be mean when I say this, but I have a hard time believing that their weren't better dancers to award Gold and Silver to other than Askerov and Skorik. Especially Skorik. I saw her variations from the competition and other than having nice lines, she has no personality/acting ability on stage, is very stiff, wooden, and seems terrified at times. She also constantly messes up. I cringed when she crumbled and lost her balance in the Grand Pas Classique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sans6XAY3c

Maybe they are more impressive live to forgive their short comings...

I think compared to the competition they were deserving of their places. It's not as though they were awarded the Grand Prix! Bondareva put in a couple of lovely performances in Round 1 + 2 but her Round 3 was really quite athletic and lacked artistry. Skorik put in good but not great performances in Round 1 + 2 and her Round 3 was much improved. I enjoy watching Skorik- I can't take my eyes off of her and think she is absolutely beautiful, but she's inherently unstable due to her hyper-flexible structure. She's obviously worked hard on this in recent years but it still troubles her. It would probably improve with the addition of some muscle mass but what dancer carries more than the absolute minimum muscle mass? She does have something special- the video is now gone from Youtube, but in her 2 swans variation in the rehearsal for the 3D telecast she looked much better than Odette- she just needs to come out of her shell on stage. When she's on, she's just gorgeous.

I have a newfound appreciation of Timur following this competition. People will whinge that he won gold because he's from a wealthy family and can benefit the Mariinsky, blah blah blah whinge whinge whinge, and so on. But, he was lovely- he looks so happy to be out there- he's super consistent, he puts in clean, precise, solid performances every time and I just love to watch him jump. He covers so much stage. He's a tall guy too, look at the length of those legs in grand jete! He doesn't look as good in partnering as he does in his solos- just lacks a little something that makes you want to watch him, but he was deserving of his place compared to the other males.

I can understand die-hard Mariinsky fans having a whinge about this pair. You can clearly see the artistic and stylistic difference between dancers who trained at VBA vs. those who didn't. But this wasn't a Mariinsky competition, and they performed well in each round and obviously performed very well compared to the other couples. Congratulations to them!

Wonderful to see those clips from the competition, I was overjoyed- they do keep the flag flying for classical ballet in Russia. To compare, there was the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) ballet competition the other day and it was totally modern - and very boring. I do think that contestants should do one classical solo and one modern.
