Millie
It is almost time for the New York International Ballet Competition to begin, and they have still not listed the competitors on the site. Am I missing something? The last time this competition was held in 2007, the names of the dancers were listed at least a month ahead. Does anyone have a link to who is entered this year? It is much more fun following this event when one knows who is dancing!
mom2
I was just wondering the same thing myself, Millie. Hopefully someone "in the know" will respond soon! m2
Dale
Here's the latest release I received: TEACHERS AND COACHES FOR NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION 2009 NYIBC is pleased to announce the teachers and coaches for the upcoming 2009 event. 48 dancers from 17 countries around the world will arrive in New York by June 6th for the Orientation that takes place the next day at Fordham University/Lincoln Center, where participants are housed for the full 3 weeks of NYIBC. Class teachers are Fabrice Herrault and Deborah Wingert; Coaches for the three Competition pas de deux are Cynthia Gregory, Winthrop Corey, and Rachel Berman. At the Orientation, Executive Director Ilona Copen, director Richard Chen See, artistic director Eleanor D'Antuono will all be on hand to greet the dancers and explain the NYIBC rules. (In the early competition years, several translators were required; interestingly almost all of the dancers over the past few years are fluent in English). The most exciting moment for the participants is the announcement of the three pas de deux chosen. This information is not given out in advance, assuring that all dancers start on equal footing. Every day begins, of course, with class. Alternating class teachers are Fabrice Herrault and Deborah Wingert. Herrault trained in Paris and danced with many companies in Europe. He is currently on the faculty at Steps. Deborah Wingert danced with New York City Ballet for 13 years and is currently a faculty member at MMAC. Coaches for the three pas de deux are Cynthia Gregory, former principal with American Ballet Theatre and a participant, as teacher, coach, jury member, or consultant in every NYIBC since its founding; Winthrop Corey, another returning coach, former principal with both the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and National Ballet of Canada, and currently Artistic Director of the Mobile Ballet; Rachel Berman, principal dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company from 1989 to 1999. She now stages Taylor works for companies and is invited to guest teach in schools and universities around the country. www.nyibc.org
carbro
Thanks, Dale, but still no info on how to get tkts. Editing to add: NYIBC.org has a link to buy tickets (although apparently only for June 24) through Jazz at Lincoln Center. Presumably you can save handling fees by purchasing in person at JALC's box office in the Time-Warner Center.
Millie
Still no news on who the participating dancers are? What a shame for both the organization and the young dancers involved. I am sure both could benefit from some good press.

Marga
Artjom Maksakov (Estonia), Bronze Medal Thank you Viviana, for the report! Artjom is a beautiful dancer, and I'm so happy he won the bronze medal! He dances with the National Ballet of Estonia. In his last year at the Tallinn Ballet School, he was dancing quite regularly with the company. He has been a soloist for a few years.
