2022: Free Streaming during COVID-19 Crisis

Well, I'm beside myself with anticipation. On January 14, God willing, the Vienna State Ballet will livestream Jerome Robbins' Other Dances, Lucinda Childs' Concerto and George Balanchine's Liebeslieder Walzer. 19:30 CET/1:30 pm Eastern. These are usually available on demand for 24 hours after the livestream.

I have to say, I didn't know what to expect from Martin Schläpfer's leadership, especially after seeing his own ballets, but I'm sold on his programming.

La Scala's new production of La Bayadère (Nureyev) is available on the Rai Play site until January 8th. I'm not encountering a geoblock. The performance stars Nicoletta Manni, Timofej Andrijashenko and Maria Celeste Losa.

Apologies for not having posted sooner.

I am not sure this is the right palace to post but a newly filmed Swan Lake by National Ballet of Ukraine is now available for free. It has been filmed for the Japanese audience as their tour in December was canceled, but of course everyone can watch. The Japanese promoter will collect donations for the theatre which is of course in great danger.

Thank you so much for posting. Japan has been providing exceptional support for Ukraine during this catastrophe and their support for artists is greatly appreciated.

We know from social media that the company has had to suspend operations and many dancers are fleeing or in bomb shelters.

When this is over (and Ukraine survives as a democracy!), I do hope this company can make a tour of the West. I imagine there would be huge support. I would certainly travel to see them.

I can't tell from photos of Kyiv if the opera house has been bombed. Has anyone else been able to determine that?

This is how the gorgeous opera house in Odessa is being shored up.

This tweet reminded me about the NY Times article criticizing the US Army for dragging it's feet on creating a Monuments Men group, à la WWII:

Ukraine War Bares U.S. Army Delay in Creating New ‘Monuments Officers’

Civilian specialists are tracking the threat to landmarks in Ukraine as the U.S. Army struggles after more than two years to appoint new cultural heritage preservation specialists modeled after the “Monuments Men.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/25/arts/ukraine-cultural-sites-art.html

But it all sounded like a lot of presumptuous and wishful thinking when I first read the piece. How is it exactly that the Russian army is going to let US military members into Ukraine to 'fix' cultural sites? There's going to be martial law for a good long time while Russia reconstitutes the Ukrainian government, and likely the police and security forces, etc, to their own liking. While the Russians are busy punishing Ukraine into an obedient third world nation, Americans will be allowed exactly no access to the region.
