San Francisco Ballet is one of the 5 companies involved in a live web stream on World Ballet Day:

Beginning on "Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 7pm PDT, San Francisco Ballet is participating in the first-ever World Ballet Day Live".

The $25 to $100 donation seems to have been most popular. So we can say it was a grass roots movement, and not just funded by big donors.

As to why there's no formal beginning for this video - the video just jumps into the action in class - we may never know. A technical problem, perfhaps, and the intro footage was lost. But hopefully it is something that can be corrected...

Two noticeable absences: I believe Tiit Helimets and Sarah Van Patten are not present. Oh, and Mathilde Froustey was still in Europe dancing galas on this date.

Yes, it's fun to re-watch much of this.

The long section of class is mostly for serious fans of SFB, but the rehearsal footage (beginning around 1:15:20) is all of interest. Vanessa Zahorian appears in a Don Q PDD, and Yuan Yuan Tan is, as usual, intense and riveting in the Raku rehearsal. A good example of someone putting 100% into her work.

I agree with Pherank that this was a lot of fun to watch. Helgi Tomasson seemed so happy.

The SFB four hours is available until 1:00 p.m. this Saturday and then it will be condensed due to licensing issues according to SFB on its facebook page. I enjoyed watching the differences in each of the five different company classes, and was happy to have a four-hour orientation to the Australian Ballet, which I will see in Los Angeles next week. SFB's Vanessa Zahorian and soloist Dana Genshaft, who were out last year, are both seen in company class. For some unknown reason, Sarah Van Patten and Tiit Helimets were not participating. Davit Karapetyan and Frances Chung did a brilliant rehearsal of Don Q Act III pas de deux, and the first rehearsal starts with initial Don Q's Dryad scene with the corps de ballet and Maria Kochetkova and Sofiane Sylve. I was happy to spot Julia Rowe rehearsing in the back in William Forsythe's The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, learning the soloist role that Sasha de Sola was doing for the rehearsal.

I saw on the Bolshoi's website that they will keep their entire four hours intact for permanent viewing.

This was a terrific event. My personal favorite of the 20 hours is the Royal Ballet's rehearsal with Liam Scarlett rehearsing his new work, The Age of Anxiety. It should not be missed.

Nadezhda Pavlova was coaching La Sylphide in yesterday's Bolshoi segment. She is one of my favorite dancers EVER! Her Kitri, and so many other parts she danced were ( and now on youtube) glorious. I'm so glad she is coaching.

I still can't watch the SFB segment because of the announcer. But I will not let Fox tv keep me away:

The Scarlett piece instantly reminded my of Jerome Robbins: Fancy Free and the West Side Story Suite, that sort of thing. A Broadway feel, but also a general New York/1950s atmosphere; although Scarlett may not be aiming for anything too specific in terms of place. We'll have to see...
