Farrell Fan
The March-April issue of Kennedy Center News, a bimonthly publication mailed to patrons, looks forward to the March appearance of NYCB. A subheadline refers to it as "the venerable New York City Ballet;" the first sentence calls it "the legendary New York City Ballet." In my opinion, both these adjectives make the company sound ready for the embalmer. But, as a former copywriter, I realize how hard it is to characterize NYCB in a word or two. "Balanchine's New York City Ballet?" No longer applicable. "Innovative NYCB?" "Controversial NYCB?" Not quite right. The best I can come up with is "Exciting New York City Ballet," although that is not exactly inspired. Any ideas? Link to comment
canbelto
How about New York City Ballet, the premier American ballet company? (I don't know how accurate that is, considering theres the ABT and San Francisco Ballet, but ...) Link to comment
drb
Thrill to a new generation of dare-devil youngsters, while old favorites touch your soul with profound artistry. You'll fall for them, as they fall for you! Link to comment
Leigh Witchel
I think "legendary" is apt, but you're quite right about venerable, FF. If the company performs a miracle can we call it The Blessed NYCB after the beatification? Link to comment
bart
How about the "not your father's" NYCB? This would have the advantage of ambiguity. Some would see it as the equivalent of "new and improved" -- and others as a lament for a loss of Balanchinian purity. Link to comment

KayDenmark
I would prefer that the dancers do not fall for me. Injury may result. Link to comment

I hope my attempt at an ironic comment on falling-worship, referring to another thread, was not misunderstood. If nothing else, it hurts. Link to comment
ViolinConcerto
After last night, I would (going back to the "words for NYCB") say "AMAZING," or "SENSATIONAL" or "UNMATCHED." But I guess that those have all been used. Link to comment
