  1. I guess Catazaro, Stanley and Janzen will have to wait. Ultimately I think they will all eventually make it to principal.
  2. I thought Cerveris was amazing in Fun Home and he absolutely deserved to win Best Actor.
  3. Seeing Miller as Titania reminded me of old photos I've seen of a young Suzanne Farrell as Titania. It was refreshing to see someone so young and sweet in the role. Looking forward to seeing more of her in the future. Huxley did well, but the wooden acting problem resurfaced. After seeing him do such a great acting job as James, it was disappointing to slip back in the acting department. Bouder and Adrian DW were excellent, but overall I preferred Tiler and Tyler earlier in the week. As noted, Sterling Hytlin is excellent as one of the four lovers, but was badly miscast in the divert. Maybe she would do better with another partner in the divert. Not sure. I would have thought that shw would eventually get Titania, but so far that hasn't happened. Anyone know if there was a particular reason that Faye Arthurs was given Helena for the last show of the season? She's been with the company a Long time.
  4. I was surprised, but it's clear art won out over commerce last night. Fun Home is the little show that could. It's not going to appeal to many people, especially the tourist crowd looking for a big spectacle. In all of the lesser competitions lleading up to the Tony's, it never competed with AiP because it already ran off Broadway about 2 years ago, when it swept most of the theater awards. This was the first head to head competion between the two shows. Nothing against Fairchild, but Cerveris TOTALLY deserved that award. His performance is heartbreaking.
  5. Yes, they moved her seat to the front row of Radio City for the segment in which that teacher received an excellence award.
  6. I'm shocked that Fun Home won the Tony for best musical, even though I thought it was a much better and deeper show than AiP. Turned out to be a not so wonderful night for AiP. Did Michael Cerveris refer to R Fairchild as "Robbie Fitzgerald"
  7. Did everyone see Misty on the Tony awards? She introduced On The Town.
  8. Per NY Times, Lovette and Huxley promoted to principal, Ashly Isaacs promoted to soloist. Sorry, having trouble posting the NY Times link. Congrats to all!!
  9. Sarafanov was much more "on" tonight than earlier in the week. He gave a great performance tonight.
  10. That flute guy has been playing on the 66th Street platform for years. He always plays something related to the performance that's happening at Lincoln Center that night. A few years ago the NY Times ran a story about him, I think. There is now also a trumpet guy who has muscled in on the flute guy's "territory". Only in New York. kids. Only in New York.
  11. I don't think the danseur should lower his standard to make the ballerina look better. Rather the ballerina must raise her standard of dancing.
  12. I thought Cojocaru's performance was gorgeous and ethereal. Every line and position was fully stretched as the temple dancer Nikiya. Yes, she has such a sweet stage presence that helps to create character. She simplified or modified some portions of Act II (Shades) scene, but overall it was very impressive. Cornejo also gave a stellar performance. Some of his jumps were very high and fast. No problems partnering Alina either. Copeland was better n the final act than in act I, but I found her performance disappointing. Her jumps in Act I barely got off the ground, and she lacked control during her fouettes. Traveling during fouettes and spins is less problematic when it's done in a straight line, but when you start zig zagging to the side it becomes obvious that the dancer lacks control and the zig zagging is unattractive. I also noticed the music was slowed down during the Act I Gamzatti solo to accommodate Copeland. Sklyar Brandt did a knockout first shade. More of her please! Gorak was also impressive as the Golden Idol.
  13. Based on the other dates, it appears that the dates will conflict with the NYCB season. Also appears that they would be going to City Center rather than the Koch.
  14. I think many people attend musicals for grand spectacle of scenery, costumes and so on. Most of the NYCB rep has no scenery and minimal costumes. I actually think that the musical theater audience member looking to try out a ballet would be more drawn to a full length costume/scenery driven ballet of grand spectacle classic like SL or SB.
  15. http://entertainment.suntimes.com/music/miami-city-ballet-hamburg-ballet-among-major-dance-companies-headed-harris-theater-2015-2016-season/ MCB going to Chicago's Harris Theater Apr 29-30 with two programs.
  16. Great news. So happy this talented dancer has landed in a good place. Also, isn't MCB coming to NYC as part of its anniversary tour in 2016? We may be lucky enough to see Messmer here in a lead role.
  17. As noted in the RB Tour topic, Osipova has withdrawn from her Washington DC Don Q with the RB on tour. No info on whether she will withdraw from her RB Chicago and NY performances, or her ABT Juliet.

    2015 US Tour

Nice of the RB to provide this info as soon as possible. Wonder when Osipova will give KM her final word on whether she will come for her ABT Juliet, and, in turn, when KM would convey that info to ABT ticket holders.

  20. Ulbricht was fantastic last night. His solos were breathtaking. It was as though the stage was too small to contain him. In the scene where is moving backwards while doing jumps, I wanted to warn the kids in the back to get out of the way. No problem, Ultbricht was very aware of his spatial limitations. I haven't seen an Oberon do such terrific leg beats since Peter Boal left. No cheating, no fudging. Just flat out brilliant dancing. Amazing elevation and speed. Why oh why has Martins denied him this role for so many years? Goodbye Puck, hello Oberon! I was very torn about missing Veronika's Bayadere across the plaza, but with the good fortune of having Ulbricht in as a last minute replacement for Garcia, no regrets here. (Nothing against Garcia, but I think he needs to retire certain roles, and this is one.) Reichlin doesn't really have much in the way of comedic timing or sensibility, so in that respect her performance was weak. However, her dancing was lovely. Nice to see Ashley Laracey back on stage as one of the lovers. Janzen and Catazaro were good, but oh what a shame to have such good looking men dressed in such silly wigs. I didn't care for Pollack as Helena. I never feel any emotion from her in roles where acting is required. Oh, and did I mention that Ashly Isaacs was awesome as Hypolita. She was in complete control and command, with great fouettes that never traveled. Act II was disappointing. Sterling and Amar are still figuring this pdd out, and it showed. The phrasing was choppy instead of flowing gracefully. Also, Amar slightly tripped over Hyltin's foot, which didn't help matters.
  21. LOL. No, Sarafanov wore the standard issue ABT garb.
  22. Wishing Garcia the best, but I'm thrilled to see Ulbricht tonight.
  23. Thanks for posting those links.
  24. Dudley Williams has died. I remember him most vividly from his solo "I Wanna Be Ready" from Revelations. He performed it regularly when I was going to see the Ailey company at City Center in the 1990s. Nobody who I've observed at Ailey has managed to bring the same depth of emotion and poignancy to that solo as Dudley Williams. He was a gem that I feel lucky to have seen live. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/04/arts/dance/dudley-williams-eloquent-dancer-who-defied-age-dies-at-76.html?ref=arts
  25. Tiler Peck and Tyler Angle certainly deserved the highest praise for the pdd. The pdd in this ballet was one of the great roles danced by Wendy Whelan and Jock Soto. Wendy was always ethereal in it. Recently Tiler has been cast in a lot of Wendy's old roles, and I have been skeptical. TIler's performance in this role was the first time that I felt Tiler Peck met or exceeded the level of Wendy's prior performances.
