  1. OMG!!! Than you thank you thank you!!!...I'm TOTALLY INLOVE with Kirkland... One of the BEST S. solo I've EVER seen...even sans my favorite diagonal.
  2. I just found this, and thought it would be nice to share it. It is the Mikhailovsky-(Maly)- production of Pyotr Gusev's staging of "Harlequinade", filmed and aired in 1978 by the BBC as part of the T.V. special "3 Ballets by Marius Petipa". Enjoy! Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
  3. American-born maybe...? What about Alonso, with her acquired citizenship...? (I always remember atm711 when talking about her as a truly American ballerina... ) And yes, there are some hints in between Tallchief's lines, but she doesn't go that deep...even less than Danilova. So...there's NOTHING by LeClerq...? ...and what about Zorina...?
  4. I'm reading "Maria Tallchief: America's Prima Ballerina". I started reading this book after a conversation with a former new yorker friend in which he told me that back in the days all his friends and himself thought that Gelsey Kirkland had been the favorite candidate to become the first American ballerina to achieve an international stardom. I immediately thought about Tallchief, and even Farrell. I had read Farrell's book already,so I got my hands on Tallchief's to make some comparisons and see. If anything, I find fascinating to find some common places among the authors of this books. This is the fourth book I read in which the dancer keeps making sure that her importance within the Balanchine world gets properly recognized. After reading Danilova's early memories of the choreographer, to Alonso's brief experience with B's early creations for BT, to the late narratives of Farrell, and even Kirkland, Tallchief comes somewhere in the middle, I guess when Balanchine was at his maximum physical-mental capacity. Lovely pics included, and as I said, there are the obligated phrases..."Balanchine created this or that for me", along with the usual descriptions of his working method...something in which all this women seem to convey and agree. I think Leclerq will go next...
  5. I'm happy to see Wong and Baker escalating the ranks. Congrats. They will have to work really hard to cover the huge space that Cox left behind. Sad to see Spiridonakos out. I loved this tall dancer.
  6. As per video, surreal Soloviev. Jump, elevation and ballon beyond comprehension... Live, I haven't seen ANYTHING that can compare to Sarabita-(Rolando Sarabia)-when he started his professional career. Next to him...Julio Bocca and Maximiliano Guerra.
  7. Thanks for the post, bart. It is nice to see our troupe getting busy. I wonder how the absence of Cox will affect all the upcoming performances. We'll see. It's great to see Woetzel doing all this.
  8. Great pic...! (Notice the old Aeroflot logo on the left upper side. The next text is from Wikipedia) "Plans were afoot to replace the old Soviet-era hammer and sickle logo, which some people in the West treat as a reminder of Soviet communism. However, as it was for over 70 years the most recognisable symbol of the company, the logo was, in the end, retained".
  9. You're quite right, Hans. I DO have an issue with that substitution. No apologies needed, Leonid...!!
  10. On the other side, when one notices obvious failures, random substitutions, awful mishaps and non justified choreographic absences, then the performance is not so worthy...
  11. And here...three of my favourites clips of this variation... Talk about ART!!!
  12. Giselle's "Spesivtseva's solo". I tend to be quite harsh on the ballerina who's performing it, especially if I find out that she substitutes the final diagonal for the series of piqué turns...
  13. I mentioned this in the Other Arts Forum but hey, I can't recomend it enough, so here it goes again, just in case you see it announced around your area. The documentary's name is "Outrage", from filmmaker Kirby Dick, and it basically takes issue with the secret lives of closeted gay politicians , especially conservative Republicans who outwardly oppose gay rights. The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, features tell-alls from men who say they've had relationships with various Republicans, including Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Bush strategist Ken Mehlman and former Senator Larry Craig. I saw it last week at the Miami Beach Film society, and I guess it's playing in limited venues countrywide, but catch it if you can. It is worth it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outrage_(2009_film)
  14. This thread makes me itch, as I can't help to come back. The thing is that, besides that first flash of dancing that forever has stayed in my memory-(Alonso's Giselle)-then I have to talk about that other type of ballet love, more mature in nature. After quite few years watching ballet, then along came Miss Lorna Feijoo, which I had the opportunity to see dancing from her very start out of the ballet school 'till the moment she defected. I must say she has left an impression in my mind and soul that no one has been able to surpass afterward...
  15. No apologies atm711, for which this is the absolute true!!. and BTW...it was you who I was eager to see responding on this thread... Edited to add: Quite a gap of time from atm's experience watching Alonso-(50's...?)- to Natalia's during the 70's to myself during the 90's...The lapses are of 20 years each...
  16. Miss Natalia...may I use the beginning of your answer...? ...dancing her way out of her cottage in Giselle in 1991 for the first-(if not the last)-time, with a whole city roaring at her feet was a surreal experience. She was 71 at the time. Edited to add: BTW, I've been checking this thread very often, as there's one poster for which I'm DYING to see the response. My curiosity is based in the IMMENSE ballet knowledge/experience this poster has. C'mon, pop out!!
  17. Beautiful pic, rg! More than her name I'm intrigued by the ballet for which she's wearing that costume...beautiful tutu and bodice!
