He won an Olivier Award for playing Sergey Esenin opposite Vanessa Redgrave's Isadora Duncan, and he was a good enough pianist to have entered the conservatory if he hadn't chosen acting.)

  8. We usually get three reviews of PNB programs: one in the Seattle Times, one in Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and one in Seattle Weekly. There is often a preview article in at least one of the two dailies and a short preview in the Seattle Weekly and in The Stranger, the local alternative newspaper. R.M. Campbell (PI) covers music and dance, and Moira MacDonald (ST) covers dance and film. The dailies' reviews are run the first weekend, but I'm not sure if the Seattle Weekly's schedule allows that.

  10. I'm really glad to hear that about the latest SFB triple bill. PNB's Valentine program had a big success, also partially due to repeat viewings. But I do hope Sylvia is also a success its second time around.
  11. What a worthy goal, especially considering that unlike film, which can be viewed again and again, the vast majority of ballet performances go unrecorded for public viewing. How else, except by the local press and occasionally national or international journals, can we hear about great debuts?Sadly, Ballet Talkers can't see everything and report it here.
  12. Carolyn Carlson is a ballet-trained modern dancer, although she was AD of the Cullberg Ballet and has been affiliated with several other companies. She was in Alwin Nikolais' company, and I saw her do an extraordinary long solo called "Blue Lady" at BAM either in the 80's or early 90's. Her ballet technique came through very strongly in this solo.

  15. The US subsidizes companies indirectly, through substantial tax deductions to individuals and foundations. While I would not argue that there are never enough private donations to go around, it is a different value system, and one that is being adopted within Europe and Russia, as tax-based budgets shrink and fewer institutions receive state funding.There is a big difference between state-supported ballet and opera institutions in Europe and support of a company dedicated to a single choreographer. While the repertoire for Paris Opera Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Royal Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, La Scala Ballet, etc. has focused more on specific choreographers within each period of artistic leadership, state institutions are cross-choreographer repertory companies dedicated to an evolving art. There is no large scale institutional equivalent for modern dance.
  16. I don't think there could be any dancing in the bio-pic unless it was historical footage. It's one thing to play a fictional character, even if "based on" a real person, but who would volunteer to try to dance as Farrell or Tallchief or LeClerq or Adams or McBride, etc. in a Balanchine biopic? (Or Fonteyn, in a biopic of her life?) The only way I could see it work is if a real dancer playing the role were to mark dancing in rehearsal or that there were lots of poses and close-ups.
  17. I personally think that any classical artist or group that pairs up with Celine Dion automatically loses his/her/its classical cred. In my opinion, the step into the abyss happened when opera houses started to use amplification. Not only does this practice fabricate a number of "opera singers," who cannot produce the sound naturally, but it also habituates the audiences' ear to an amplified and limited sound. I think this is different than the somewhat airbrushed quality of modern-day recordings.

Vu An has a beautiful physique and line, and does the steps very well, but watching Vassiliev demonstrate in rehearsal is again worth the entire video. It truly separates the men from the boys.
