  1. The prurient details have made The New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/17/arts/tel...7star.html?8dpc (I find this disturbing.)
  2. For the past few hours I've been listening to Die Walkure on the Sirius Met Opera Channel: Brunnhilde: Birgit Nilsson Wotan: Thomas Stewart Siegrune: Leonie Rysanek Siegmund: Jon Vickers Fricka: Christa Ludwig from 2/24/68.
  3. The 10-page thread with many opinions of the video can be found here: http://ballettalk.invisionzone.com/index.p...pic=22418&st=15 (It's page 2; scroll down for reviews. The first page and half was a discussion of when and where the video would be released.)
  4. [Edited to add]: This was a reply that was originally in the Monique Meunier thread, because of Danny Tidwell's former association with Complexions, Meunier's new company.] According to Tidwell's website, he co-founded the quarterly magazine, Movmnt Magazine, which launched in June. About company affiliations, his "about" page states
  5. Bolender's performance, with Janet Reed as "Rich Girl," is included in the new DVD "Jacques D'Amboise: Portrait of a Great American Dancer/Portrait d'un grand danseur américain."
  6. miliosr, thank you so much for your vivid reports on this season. I rely on them while I wait to get to the friend's house whose been taping them for me. (My cable is out temporarily.)
  7. Donald Collup, whose documentary "Never before: The Life and First New York Career of Astrid Varnay" was based partly on conversations with Astrid Varnay in 2003, is presenting a free screening of the film in memory in Ms. Varnay. Date: Thursday, November 2, 2006 Location: The Lillie Devereaux Blake School Address: 45 East 81st Street Time: 8pm
  8. Unlike Villella, McBride/Bonnefous, Hayden, Tomasson, and Russell/Stowell, who've gotten recognition in the last decade, Bolender was of the pioneer generation working between coasts when New York was the practically the only recognized place on the US dance map, and the descriptions "regional" and "second-rate" were considered synonymous. It's great to see the tributes to Bolender from the dance community he nurtured in a national news vacuum.

    Hello from Moscow

Welcome to Ballet Talk, Alex! The forum in which to post your iimpressions of the Maris Liepa Gala is in Galas, Competitions, Festivals, and Commemorations, which is the first forum in the Ballet Companies, Performances, and Reviews section. We look forward to hearing about the Gala!
  10. Is Sarah Lane doing Sinatra Suite or is it just a publicity shot? Unfortunately, we won't know until the casting comes out. PNB recently had a dancer in the shot for Fancy Free, and he didn't perform the role (unless the website for Week 2 was wrong.)

  14. I painted one of those on velvet when I was a kid... I'm not sure what I was thinking, except to stay within the lines...
  15. Ballet Talk is a site to discuss issues, history, music, and performances of classical ballet. Your question is appropriate for our sister site, Ballet Talk for Dancers. You will need to register separately for this site, where you'll find forums ranging from ballet attire and shoes to ballet education and summer intensives to health and nutrition. Good luck! I'm going to close this topic now.
  16. I agree with you about the cutesy names. Seattle also names them. Last year, there was "Valentine" in February, but in general, they are descriptive in a straightfoward way: "Director's Choice" really does mean rep that Peter Boal chose, "All Premiere" is a program of ballets not seen in Seattle before, "Stravinsky 125" is an All-Stravinsky program in honor of the 125th anniversary of Stravinsky's birth, and "Wheeldon, Duato, and Balanchine" does tell us what we're going to see. PNB performs one program at a time, though, and even so, if there were three or four programs out of seven that were named "Robbins, Balanchine, Taylor-Corbett," "Wheeldon, Balanchine, and Duato," "Quijado, Martins, Dove, and Tharp" -- they did resist the temptation to call it "The Rainbow Coalition" program -- this would confuse many patrons. The San Francisco naming option, where at most two programs play in the same two-three week period, is more difficult at NYCB, because they are performing so many programs at the same time. "Did I see 3? Or was that 4? Was 2 from Winter Rep or last week?" For "Girls Night Out," you might think "Ugh" among the printable possibilities, but I suspect you'll remember if you saw the program, and know if you'll want to see it again.
  17. But what about the female lead in Sinatra -- you'd think they'd want to publicize at least that much. Unless they think that if a name is not recognized at large or is part of an established partnership, it will scare people away. Like in opera, where the tenor is well-known, but the soprano or the baritone isn't a household name.
  18. Particularly when you look at the overhaul that NYCB did on its website, but even the old site was strong on casting. It's ironic that ABT, which publishes casting in the big New York Times ads (at least for the Spring/Summer seasons) and sells stars and partnerships, can't get basic website casting down. The Metropolitan Opera also did an overhaul of its website, which is now far more appealing to net-savvy people, many of whom are in the demographic that needs to replace the aging audience. If you can't sell ABT online, I'm not sure where their future audiences are going to come from.

  20. I've only seen one of Jones' early works (with Arnie Zane, who was still alive at the time), Secret Pastures, but from the descriptions I've read of his later work, I've always been puzzled by the term "victim art" being applied to him. I agree 100% with the term being applied to von Trier.

  23. Try to view the Calendar now. You should be able to see it. The workaround should work.
  24. That's odd -- all New Members should have permission to view the calendar, but not start events until they are Full Members. I'll check the support site to see if this is a known issue. The reason you can't do a member search is because you are not yet a Full Member (10 substantial posts). Unfortunately, the board software doesn't allow us to suppress the "Members" link and disable the link on Member names until you've become a Full Member.
  25. Congratulations, Rosie! On our sister site, Ballet Talk for Dancers, there's a forum for Adult Ballet Students that you might find helpful. If you want to post on BT4D, you'll have to register there as well from the link at the top of the page.
