  1. Thanks, Susan! You've captured the event in a very few words, but I hope you'll write more later. I'm going to move this topic to Recent Performances (where we put performances that don't have their own company forum) so it will no longer be off topic More comments welcome!!!!
  2. Dewdrop, you just made the case for mixed programs! It's a wonderful way to introduce people to a company they might not get to see otherwise.
  3. I'm another "Promethan Fire" fan. The company brought it to Washington this past season, and after two perfectly ok works (for me, Taylor's craft is always solid) that weren't top drawer, "Fire" just exploded. The dancers took two steps and you knew it was going to be a great work.
  4. Hi article 19! Thanks for dropping by! Are you seeing ANY new work that you think is interesting? It seems to me that we've needed The Next New Thing for a long time now.
  5. Hi, paolo! Your English is great! I'm sorry, but we won't be of much help on this forum. You might try posting it on our sister forum, Ballet Talk for Dancers, here: Cross Talk This forum is to talk about performances, books, etc., so I'm going to close this thread. I"m sure someone on the Dancers forum will be able to help you.
  6. Interesting question. Miami City Ballet, Edward Villella's company, has "Giselle" in repertory. I do think it's natural for a director to bring to his/her company the repertory, mores, and all the other trappings of the company he -- and it is nearly always a he, so I'm dropping the PC his/her -- grew up in. The current generation of directors seem to fall into the after-ABT or after-NYCB mold. An exception is Helgi Tomasson, whose company, and some directorial practices, seem more like the Royal Danish Ballet of old than NYCB.
  7. That's a terrific image -- I see a 21st century "Fancy Free," with a more active bartender and more for the women to do......
  8. I'd forgotten about that. He did work on a production of Aida in Washington about two years ago -- I would imagine with the Washington Opera. I didn't see it, and don't remember details.
  9. Yes, I think a lot of people are watching this one. It's the first generational change at a major company here in a long time. editing to correct -- I forgot Houston Ballet. THAT was a generational change.
  10. I can't help, I'm afraid -- I hope someone can. But I feel your pain The only "Giselle" I've ever heard that treated the score as though it were a score and not a long, tiresome jingle is the way the Royal Danish Ballet orchestra played it in the early 1990s (and I'm sure before that, as well.) It had an entirely different, darker coloration, with the mad scene really brought to a boil, and the act one curtain came down to thunder.
  11. Press release from American Ballet Theatre: NINA ANANIASHVILI TO TAKE MEDICAL LEAVE American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Nina Ananiashvili has announced that she will take a temporary medical leave from the Company effective immediately. As a result, she will not perform during ABT’S Fall season at City Center as previously announced. Ananiashvili will return to American Ballet Theatre in time to perform for the Company’s engagement at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, February 1-13, 2005. -------------------------------------------------------- Before anyone asks, this is the whole and entire press release. We have no further details, and we're not going to ask I'm assuming that if Ms. Ananiashvili wanted us to know exactly what was going on, down to the anatomical details and medications prescribed, if any, she would have let us know.
  12. There's an article in the Seattle Weekly by Sandi Kurtz that I thought raised some very interesting and important points about artistic direction. It's specifically about Pacific Northwest Ballet, but it speaks to what artistic directors do generally, and about the direction ballet companies take. Since we've had so many discussions about that here, I thought this was worth posting for discussion. Changing Partners
  13. Thanks, rg. It is best to handle such thing through private messages, I think. I will say this, though, generally. I'm very grateful that rg has posted these photos and let us look at them. As we've said in the video forum, people can't possibly send out photos or scans or videos, etc. to everyone who might want them, so please, don't ask
  14. One thing I wondered when looking at rg's photographs is about the Chabukiani, and Nureyev, roles he did. I'd always read (and not just from Nureyev) that Chabukiani's roles had been retired because there wasn't an adequate successor. That's why he was partnered with Dudinskaya, then in her 40s, when he was 19 -- because she wanted to dance those roles again. Yet, here we have evidence that there was someone dancing those roles.
  15. Ballet.co has a special section on Ashton and I wanted to post the link to it for future reference -- I'm sure they will be adding to it as the year progresses and reviews and other material are added during the season. There's a brief biography, information about the ballets and films, and some gorgeous photographs. Thanks to Jane Simpson for this! Frederick Ashton Centenary Celebration

  17. What an interesting idea, Bryan -- have you seen any choreographers in particular whose work you find interesting? Or just an expectation because of, as you put it, "the social and economic drivers" in place. And do you think those drivers will produce experimentation, or go into creating institutions along Western models?
  18. In a grouping such as "Kistler, Borree, Kowroski," I'd read it as: Kistler -- girl who falls down Borree -- Russian Kowroski -- Dark Angel That was the way the casting was in DC last year, for Kistler and Borree, at any rate.
  19. Casting is now official, for Tokyo, at least. Here's the press release. NEW YORK CITY BALLET PRINCIPAL CASTING FOR TOKYO, SEPTEMBER 22 – 26, 2004 WEDNESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 22, 7:00 P.M. 20. The post Dale refers to above was deleted (as was my post explaining why). Tantris, please check your email (the account with which you registered.) Thanks!
  21. Thank you for that, Marc -- I thought I had all the "Glory of," "History of" etc. collections but this one I've missed. From the photos in rg's collection, Bregvadze is fascinating -- a very wide range, indeed.
  22. Don't worry, Victoria, at least not yet. They wear too many clothes. The only sport from this Olympics that we'll see in ballet is beach volleyball, I fear.
  23. Please liven away! And thanks, OF for posting this. I'll be interested to read what you all think of it.
  24. Is it artslynx? There's a calendar, so you can go to the date and find out who was born on that date. http://www.artslynx.org/dance/danchron.htm
