Center Stage Controversy - I object!
Old Fashioned replied to ballet_shalom_forever's topic in Ballet News & Issues
Thank you, LMCtech. If I ever have a career in film directing, I know exactly who's life I would base my ballet movie on... Although there is already an amazing documentary, I think a full blown movie would be much more entertaining and reach a larger audience, and there will definitely be more dancing. Eh- good dancing. -
Favourite NBoC ballerina?
Old Fashioned replied to sylphide*4ever's topic in National Ballet of Canada
I've never seen a performance from the company before, but I've heard great things about Chan Hon Goh and Sonia Rodriguez. They're absolutely gorgeous and look so graceful in photos! -

Really? I thought Holly Cruikshank was the original, hmph. Well, I don't know these things as well as you New Yorkers do, so guess I'm wrong. -
New NYCB apprentices and corps members

I wish Edwaard Liang would rejoin; there just aren't enough Asian people in that company. Is there a reason for this shortage? -

Wait- who's doing the role of "Girl in the Yellow Dress?" I saw the musical a few months ago, and it was Deborah Yates. -
I can't believe what I'm seeing! Jock may not have the perfect danseur body, but he is certainly not expressionless- he was one of the few I saw really become emersed in each role he did. Nor do I appreciate your comparison of him to a football player. He and some others of the company are a bit past their age for being in their top physical condition, but I enjoy watching these dancers continue on as they do just for the joy of dancing. Everyone should be entitled to their own opinion, but I have to defend one of my favorite dancers.

Thank you, Dirac. "A Christmas Memory" is one of my favorites.

I have it! I don't know the order the tapes are supposed to go in, but the set includes: The Nutcracker w/ Kistler and Woetzel Chaconne w/ Farrell and Martins; Prodigal Son w/ Baryshnikov and Karin von Aroldingen Tzigane w/ Farrell and Martins; Divertimento No. 15 w/ Merrill Ashley and others; The Four Temperaments w/ Bart Cook, Adam Luders, Colleen Neary, Ashley, and Danielle Duell Ballo della Regina w/ Ashley and Robert Weiss; Steadfast Tin Soldier w/ Baryshnikov and Pat McBride; Elegie w/ Sean Lavery and Karin; Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux w/ McBride and Baryshnikov Emeralds w/ Ashley and Aroldingen and others; Diamonds Pas with Farrell and Martins; Stravinsky Violin Concerto w/ Karin, Peter, Kay Mazzo (freakishly skinny!), and Cook

For my school's summer reading list, the honors students had to read A Separate Peace and Dandelion Wine. SP was extremely haunting, and although I enjoyed DW, I thought it odd it didn't have a plot except to describe the summer of a boy. Just for fun, I've become acutely interested in Truman Capote's short stories, especially the ones about his own life experiences.

The costume feather & your favorite small thing
Old Fashioned replied to ronny's topic in Everything Else Ballet
Oh yes, the standing still part of R&J. I also saw it in Mercurial Manoeuvres with Jennifer Ringer and Jock Soto on tv. It was very touching to see Soto just resting there for awhile- he looked so- so sweaty. Wheeldon said it was his favorite part of the ballet; I agree. Maybe it'll start a trend. -

Sigh. I was upset to learn I wouldn't have been able to attent because the day they came I would have been gone on vacation with my family. Reading your review now, I'm kind of glad I missed it. Plushenko, Anissina and Peizerat, and Kwan are my favorites. I agree with you on many points you made in your review about the skaters, like Nicole Bobek and Michael Weiss and Elvis Stojko. Finally, Weiss has been recognized! He isn't the most amazing or athletic, but there's something very balletic about him that I just love.

Yes, they are touring the US from October to December. You can get more info at http://users.skynet.be/ballet-lovers/Burning3.html There wasn't anything about it on the Bolshoi website when I searched it, but maybe you can look for the different locations they will be performing at on ticketmaster.com I was ecstatic to learn they would be in Chicago the same time I'm visiting it (my school's dance team and I are going to Indianapolis for Nationals, and we plan on staying in Chicago for an afternoon). I was hoping to get to see them perform La Baydere (because Swan Lake is just NOT one of my favorite ballets), but they're only doing SL that day. Oh well, guess I can't have everything.

Have you seen his Madame Butterfly? I'm trying to decide if I want to go see HB do it or not this September.

Include Stravinsky Violin Concerto and Tzigane to Vienna Waltzes. Since I am not able to see NYCB dancers of today on a regular basis, I wouldn't know which dancers should be cast in them. From what I have seen, I enjoy watching Wendy Whelan, Maria Kowroski, Peter Boal, Helene Alexopoulos (can you have retired dancers?!), Albert Evans and Jock Soto. And maybe some dancers from my part of town- Lauren Anderson and Carlos Acosta (well, he's not here now, anyway) or Dominic Walsh. They could do an excerpt from Stevenson's Cinderella.

Dance in America -- what would you like to see?
Old Fashioned replied to Alexandra's topic in Everything Else Ballet
Oh, I'd love anything from Bolshoi to Trockadero. It would be interesting to see more of the less known ballet companies around the world such as the Dutch National Ballet or the Asami Maki Ballet. I agree with Doris R; there should be a whole variety of companies and repertory. The commentary from all the different views that make up a ballet was a good idea when the Diamond Project aired. If ya'll get a chance, please go to Pointe's message board and sign the petition. It's under Miscellaneous titled "EVERBODY READ!" -

On the Pointe Magazine message board, one girl started a petition to PBS to broadcast more ballet. I thought it was interesting, although i don't know if it will help much. -
I found it to be fairly simple, but it did confuse me the first few times since Peter Martins just did not know how to guide through (gee, I hope that's not how he does it with his dancers). The voice over was even off with the dancers many times. I haven't looked at them yet, but there are supposed to be other exercises on there that help out other athletes in certain sports.
