  1. I saw Helgi in his dance belt only (accidentally) & I can assure you he was not at all stocky. Muscled, yes, but on the delicate side.
  2. Millo fans will be glad to hear that she gave an outrageously wonderful mini recital for the George London Foundation for Singers on Friday night. Also, to clarify one thing: the sub-head on this thread refers to the canceled recital as Millo's "Carnegie Hall debut" which it would not have been. She has sung many times at the Hall, This would have been her Carnegie recital debut only.
  3. There is also the possibility that the NYT asked Jock how he wished Mr Fuentes to be described & Jock answered "my boyfriend".
  4. I don't pray but I will make an exception in this case.
  5. The fact that the house was nearly 1/3 sold on the basis of very little promotion (a small ad in the Bway/rock section of the NYT Arts & Leisure & a very late arriving postcard) certainly indicates that Ms Millo would have had a full house once the word had gotten around. Where is Sol Hurok when you need him?
  6. On his "official" website, Tidwell lists his upcoming (2005/06) performances as being with Complexions. No further details yet. On checking the Complexions site, DT is not yet listed as a company member.
  7. Maybe you could exchange? The State Box Office is pretty good about exchanges.
  8. What do you suppose is "unexpected" about an Ashton treasure being a hit?
  9. This is just fabulous!!! I had a mini "preview" from carbro & was gobsmacked at the amount of work this had to have involved. Brave Helene and Carbro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Latest update: The Lensic website now has both the Friday & Saturday performances listed. For 7 AM!!!
  11. I always felt Farrell was spellbound by the music & the dance was her irresistible response. She inhabited the music like no one else until Part. She does remain vivid in the memory, doesn't she? (Sigh)
  12. Due to my total ineptitude at cutting & pasting, I am posting the content of an e-mail received today from the Director of Marketing at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe NM He begins by mentioned "technical difficulties" with the website & goes on to give the following information: "Peter Boal and Company Friday October 21 & Saturday October 22 7 PM Tickets $25 - 55 The dancers are: Peter Boal Albert Evans (NYCB) Le Yin (PNB) Carla Korbes (NYCB) - I gave him correct info on this Louise Nadeau (PNB) Wendy Whelan (NYCB) Program: Twyla Tharp: Pergolesi Balanchine: Pavane; Tchai Pas Forsythe: Herman Schmerman Dove: Red Angels" This will all be posted on the website when it recovers from whatever ails it. A press release is promised. I forwarded a copy of my e-mail to the moderator to ensure proper procedure re this sort of information.
  13. I spoke with the Director of Marketing at the Lensic today & was told the performances are definite & they were firming up start times & ticket prices today. He thanked me for pointing out that the web calendar wasn't up to date & said it would be shortly. So .. I just took a look at the website & they only have the Saturday performance listed thus far. This does not mean there is not a Friday performance. This sort of confusion & inefficiency is endemic in northern NM. One either goes with the flow or goes mad. After a while, it becomes quite enjoyable .. most of the time. I have inquired as to dancers' names & program(s). If such becomes available, I will post it. Viva la Fiesta!
  14. Just went to the website & did a search & you are absolutely correct, no listing. Curious. Now, granted, this is the Land of Manana, but if it's in the newsletter it should be on the website, right? I'll go by the theater this week & see what I can find out & will post it. As far as how long before the performances the company will be here, it depends on where/when they will be before Santa Fe, I would think, but I would guess they would need a couple of days to get used to the high altitude (7000' feet above sea level). If they are appearing in Denver (only a mile high) or another Rocky Mountain city, they would need less acclimation time.
  15. Hmm .. with some Leonard Bernstein music interpolated into the last scene?
  16. From "the next stage", the newsletter of the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe NM (yes, it is part of the US) the following:"Peter Boal & Company (Oct 21 & 22) - Peter Boal recently retired as a Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet. While also maintaining full-time faculty member responsibilities at the School of American Ballet, he founded and directed "Peter Boal and Company", a group of NYCB dancers that commissioned new choreography and revivals. Having premiered in March 2004 (*) the group also performed at the Joyce Theater in Manhattan, Jacob's Pillow in Becket, Massachusetts and the Biennale in Venice Italy. Peter Boal & Company includes four Principal Dancers from NYCB and two from the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the company for which Mr. Boal was recently appointed the Artistic Director." (* - I thought it was 2003) I called the theater management to ask if PB himself was dancing and was told that he was. October 21 & 22 are Friday & Saturday respectively. If/when I learn the program, I will post it. Worth a trip just to see him one more time It's also a beautiful time of year in northern NM, shivering aspens, phenomenal sunsets, oh, I could go on ... edited for typing error by zerbinetta
  17. Oh dear. Noooo from me, too. When will this unhappy spate of retirements end? Too many in a row! We need a break. How about a ban on retirements for a period of a year?
  18. & Michele Wiles? Gomes, on the Japan trip thread, was said to be injured. Let us hope he'll be back in shape by City Center. There are a lot of ensemble pieces in this season & perhaps too many names to list in the advertisement?
  19. Casting is listed in the Sunday Times for a good deal of the City Center season. This was supposed to be listed on their website the week of 8/15 according to an answer received by me from the donor department. It is STILL not listed on their website. A rather strange way to do things ... Will someone please put up the link as I've tried & it isn't working?
  20. On checking out the website for some City Center casting (there is none yet) I noticed that Danny Tidwell has been removed from the roster. Very sad.
  21. Yes, nysusan, this is the one that Mr Rockwell is claiming is the last time Spartacus was done at the Met. I have a very clear recollection of a Spartacus around 1990 with Mukhamedov but can't find the info online & my programs ... ah, well, there was a whole thread about that.
  22. Cargill: this is not the way I remember that season, which was in the neighborhood of 1990 & was at the Met. To the best of my recollection, we had a full length Spartacus, a full length Golden Age (both starring Mukhamedov) & that masterpiece, Potemkin. I've tried the archives of the Met website with no luck. Any other suggestions?
  23. Oh Ho! There you go. A choreographer may be as manipulative as he or she wishes as long as the work is based on sound logic. This is a fabulous construct. Need we limit it to choreographers, though? Might we not include composers (Wagner), painters (Magritte), architects (Gaudi), poets (Ezra Pound), etc.? I like this concept so well I'm going to adopt it. Thank you Paul.
  24. Having been brought up on Balanchine & then falling in love with Petipa, Ashton & Bournonville in that order, I suppose subtlety is among the virtues I most appreciate in ballet. In general, the choreography of Grigorovitch's Spartacus is in no way subtle. In particular, I'd point to the ooga-booga dancing of the male slave army, the chugga-bugga of the Romans & the general high level of testosterone among corps & principal men. Then there's the stereotypical vamp of Aegina. Then there are some of those unwieldy Phrygia-upside-down-in-the-arms-of- her-husband positions (Kenneth MacMillan must have really loved those) during their various pas. All of this is, to my eyes, trashy. But it's also marvelous. It's like a ballet vacation from the ballet. Extreme, yes; obvious, yes; exaggerated, yes. But I love it.
