Major new book on Petipa by Roland John Wiley

Recommended Posts

After years of rumour Roland John Wiley’s major new study of Petipa and his ballets has just been announced for publication next month:

Professor Wiley, known for his lifetime’s devotion to ballet scholarship of the highest order, looks here to have reached a new high point. The price is not untypically steep for an academic work of this scale but no doubt libraries are already placing their orders. This is very exciting!

I'm going to need to start saving for that one :)

No kidding.

This kind of catalog raisonne is as useful as it is rare in dance -- there are a few floating around in our world, but not enough.

I listened in on a talk by dance scholar Harmony Bench last year, about a project tracking Katherine Dunham's career.  She and her research colleague (forgive me but I cannot remember her name right now) have been compiling chronological information about Dunham personally, and about her company -- where they were week by week, what they did, and who might have seen them dance.  The level of detail is as impressive as it is astonishing, and for those of us who are interested in how dance developed around the US in the middle of the 20th century, this is invaluable information.  I'm so glad to see this kind of detailed work being done in dance.

This same link now shows that publication has been put back again, this time to November (Amazon suggests release on November 15th).

At the risk of seeming to repeat myself, this same link now shows that publication has been put back again, this time to March 2023 (Amazon suggests release on March 7th).

Very interesting - so on my order on Amazon it says it shipped and should have arrived yesterday by 10PM. I will check again today but it seems regrettably another delay is on the horizon!

Thanks Joseph. So do you now have the book?!

Just checked. Sadly it did not arrive even though on Amazon it says it was shipped and should have arrived by 10PM last night. I wonder what is taking so long?!

Did you ever get clarity from Amazon about the odd information - or did a copy of the book turn up?!
