  1. Isabella LaFreniere (spelling?) has returned from injury. She danced last night. Does anyone know what happened to Alston Macgill? Still injured? Added: Macgill's instagram indicates she is returning for the winter season. Good for her!
  2. For me the highlight of last night was the smokin' hot pas in Agon. Maria and Tyler Angle were electrifying.
  3. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/23/theater/michael-jackson-musical-chicago.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Farts&action=click&contentCollection=arts&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=4&pgtype=sectionfront The new musical being directed and choreographed by Wheeldon about Michael Jackson will premiere in Chicago in the fall.
  4. Whelan was at NYCB last night. For years after her retirement she did not come to NYCB because, as she put it, she was not ready to see others dance her old roles. I guess she's gotten over that, because over the past year she is at the Koch regularly.

  6. They discontinued the Dancers Choice because although the dancers were donating their time for free, the orchestra and other staff (stage hands, lighting and so on) were being paid. It became an expense they no longer wanted to undertake.
  7. I found it interesting that Craig Hall, who danced the role of Apollo only once, is coaching Stanley. How much detailed knowledge could Hall possibly have regarding the role if he only performed it once? Why didn't they call in someone with vast knowledge of the role to do the coaching?
  8. IN preparation for next week's Apollo, this article is a wonderful background piece. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/15/arts/dance/balanchine-apollo-new-york-city-ballet.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Farts&action=click&contentCollection=arts&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=3&pgtype=sectionfront
  9. Miriam Miller also did Lilac, I think.
  10. Per her instagram photos, Bouder has indicated that she will dance Aurora in SB, and her Desire will be Garcia. If memory serves, wasn't Garcia partnered with Lovette during the last run of SB? I hope they give Huxley a shot at Desire this time around.
  11. I guess Adrian D-W is still injured. I enjoyed his Apollo very much. Garcia apparently did Apollo back when he was at SFB. I guess it's a stroke of luck for him that the male ranks are now so depleted at NYCB that in the twilight of his career he is again cast as Apollo.
  12. Rachelishvili will be singing Delilah in Samson & Delilah at the Met. I think her performances are in March.
  13. I thought Seo's vision scene was lovely, but she had problems in the Rose Adagio when I saw her at the Met a few years ago.
  14. https://www.92y.org/class/ashton-balanchine-and-classicism.aspx Alastair Macaulay will be giving 10 lectures at the 92nd Street Y on the above topic starting in February 2019. The lectures are on Thursdays from 6-8PM.
  15. Casting is up through Dec 23. Daniel Ulbricht is finally debuting as Cavalier. The other big debut that week is Olivia MacKinnon as Dewdrop.

  17. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/10/23/us/metoo-replacements.html Interesting article which is tangentially related to this topic. Of all the men brought down by the Me Too movement, about half have been replaced by women.
  18. Yes, he used to do Drosselmeyer.

  20. Whelan had a position as an artistic advisor at City Center well before Martins ever left NYCB. However, I do think Whelan is pushing hard to get the position at NYCB.
  21. I saw Symphonie Concertante several times, but only once with Boylston. When Boylston danced alongside Shevchenko in that ballet, all of Boylston's shortcomings came sharply into focus. Whereas Shevshenko had a regal stage presence and beautiful upper body, I thought Boylston's upper body looked sloppy. She could do all the steps, but Boylston's lack of classical epaulment was very apparent.
  22. Since Copeland recently only has danced SL with Cornejo, it could have also been Cornejo's wishes not to dance SL twice. He is not young and has had numerous injuries. Since SL sells no matter who dances the lead, it doesn't make much difference for box office receipts whether Copeland is dancing SL twice or once. It actually makes more sense to feature her in ballets that otherwise don't sell very well. I am surprised that Copeland is not cast as Manon or in the secondary lead, Lescaut's Mistress. Speaking of Herman, 2019 is his 20 year anniversary with ABT. Is there any info about which show will be his 20 year celebration?
  23. Correct. She will not be doing Aurora. I guess she will get a few Lilac Fairy performances instead.
