  1. Wow...such group we have in there...Castro, Guevara, Mussolini...
  2. Villella sat at the "Imperial Box" with his wife. I did not see him post performance and he did not go onstage.
  3. So Ratmansky's Symphonic Dances premiere took place last night. The Arsht Center was full of socialites and a gala was to happen post performance. The program consisted in Dvorák's Carnival Overture, Balanchine's "La Valse" and Ratmansky's work. La Valse is definitely one of my favorite Balanchine ballets. The intriguing movements of the three opening ballerinas, with their mysterious aloofness and hand gestures paired with the 1947 Christian Dior/New Look/Couturier Parfumeur-inspired costume designs always makes for a wonderful ballet night opening. I really like this work. It talks to me of many things. I always see a hidden message in there on people's needs to overcome tragedy and keep waltzing and living despite loss and death. What a wonderful ballet. Villella's favorite couple Kronenberg/Guerra did the honors, and this is a ballet that Miss Kronenberg can really execute. Not too much technical demands but a real need to look glamorous and tragic onstage. The Angel of Death was Reyneris Reyes, which with his full head of black hair and handsome muscular carriage was perfect for the role. Ratmansky's "Symphonic Dances" is set to Rachmaninoff's same title work. Lots of great music, unremarkable choreography. The Cleveland Orchestra did a terrific job, and the costume designs for the second movement was really pretty, with multi colored Greek tunic-inspired outfits for the women and some sort of tuxedos for the men. For the very final accord of music Ratmansky devised a Lepeshinskaya era inspired self throw of the ballerina-(Miss Nathalia Arja)-on her back to her partner's arms, to which the audience went crazy. The troupe received lots of applauses, and Ratmansky went onstage to take his bows, along with costume designer Adeline Andre and the orchestra conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. Afterward my guest Bart Birsdall and I went to have Cuban food at Versailles.
  4. Going tonight to Ratmansky's premiere with Bart Birsdall, whom I'm currently hosting... Will report back...
  5. Just watching...and getting inspired by such beauty... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQS5QoN8Kj4&feature=related As a bit of trivia, Fernando was the son of one of the most loved pre-Castro Cuban TV icons, actress Miss Minin Bujones.
  6. He,he. What about those hard fabric dresses, like Madsen's and Fay's, which look like those you find at Ross...? http://www.dailystab...Oscars-2012.jpg http://totallycoolpi...ars2012_008.jpg Can we rate Mena Suvari's...? http://www.fashion.ie/imagebank/article_images/article_563/large/Mena-Suvari-Oscars-2012-Elton-John-AIDS-Foundation-Party-0212.jpg

  10. I have a PC, Helene. The subtitles show in the individual pages for each thread or forum, but no in the page of all the new posts...
  11. Will Streep ever be able to equal Hepburn or even surpass her on winning times...? (Hepburn=4 vs. Streep=3) Angelina's dress was beautiful. She looks emanciated, and she was trying too hard with that posing stuff...
  12. Oh God, Helene...I can make any sense of all you said. I know...that's how behind I am on computers...
  13. Me, when editing a post, I have to make sure to separate paragraphs and youtube links, as sometimes they show up all glued together, either in the editing window or in the final post. Showing all the emoticons was easier before too. Also, I REALLY miss the showing of the subtitle under the thread's title.
  14. DEFINITELY Catoya/Reyes. Reyes has the advantage of knowing the essence of the ballet back from his prime times at CNB, and is the best package for an Albrecht among the three bailarines in terms of physical attractiveness and technique. Catoya is the strongest ballerina among the three Giselles and the one with the most flair for Act I.
  15. Hi! A couple of years ago I visited Helsinki, and the company was performing Cranko's "The Timing of the Shrew". Sadly I was unable to go, but I did go to a more contemporary performance at the lovely Alexandrinsky theater, which I enjoyed a lot..! I can't remember right now the name of the ballerina, but for what I remember she is well known over there. Tall beautiful blonde woman she is. I think i did review the performance, so I will try to locate the post. Welcome to BT..!
  16. ...AND with the the certainty that the variations are being respected and cared for by others... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bAy7zA535s
  17. From last night's Giselle. Why, oh why do we have to know about certain standard steps-(turns in attitude, double pirouettes in passé with opposite legs DONE OVER ONLY ONE LEG AT THE TIME and so on)-so well that we know exactly when they're changed and even suppressed when faced with the inability to be performed...? How can we make it acceptable for a modern ballerina to not be able to perform what mid century dancers were doing more than fifty years ago..., eg. Markova, Alonso...? To be continued...
  18. Oh, I love her in Raymonda. Bessmertnova seemed to move with such lightness and delicacy without looking twiggy as some other modern ballerinas. One can see this quality at its best in her Giselle. Definitely Mme. Bessmertnova. Cristian, we are kindred spirits when it comes to Mme. Bessmertnova's Raymonda. She is quietly stunning and a model Princess Ballerina in that performance. Along with her lightness and delicacy, her footwork and especailly her port de bras are gorgeous. I also love that she brings regality and vulnerability to the role unlike so many other dancers who portray her as haughty and aloof. In fact, MakarovaFan, right after watching the reconstruction with Novikova-(which I own )-I went back and watched Bessmertnova's, and you can tell that Mme DEFINITELY wins hands down in terms of grandeur and regal demeanor. Once more, my "Blanche Dubois" theory shows up again . I love mature ballerinas who still can beat technically her younger peers, because then they really have the whole package..!
  19. I will bart, but before I wanted to reassess my impressions after the Broward performances, which start tonight. I'm going-(perhaps with the hope of a last minute substitution and the surprise of a Cuban-American Giselle onstage..? )
  20. Oh, I love her in Raymonda. Bessmertnova seemed to move with such lightness and delicacy without looking twiggy as some other modern ballerinas. One can see this quality at its best in her Giselle. Definitely Mme. Bessmertnova.
  21. Has anybody seen this...? French writer-director Roselyn Bosch does a great job of taking the subject of the 1942 Vel' d'Hiv Parisian roundup of French Jews. Going as a parallel story with that of Paquet-Brenner's "Sarah's Key"-(reviewed in this subforum also)-here we're faced again with the horror of the thousands of Jews that were rounded up into this sports arena and then sent off to the camps, never to return. A single line over the final credits recalls that thousands of more Jews were in fact hidden from the Gestapo by brave Parisians, but the drama itself focuses on those who were delivered to the Nazis by complicit French police officers and civil servants. Veteran French actor Jean Reno plays a kindly Jewish doctor who stayed with his patients; Melanie Laurent-(from Inglorious Bastards)-is a nurse who did her best to help. It's a straightforward drama, well acted and well produced. I went to see it last night and I can't get the images out of my head.
