  1. Swan Lake[ English site not ready as of 14 Sep, but ticket ordering in English is through 10 November performance. Tickets may be purchased online at: http://boxoffice.bolshoi.ru/eng/sales.html Site instructions: If you don't have an account, register for one. If you have one, login. Scroll through the calendar until you see the month of the performance you want to attend. For the performance, select either "in picture," which will show you the theater with the available seats represented by colored dots, or "in table," which will allow you to choose tickets by price and section. Select the dot(s) for the seats you wish to purchase or check the seats from the list, and click "Add to Basket." Review the summary and confirm the order. Once confirmed, you'll get a confirmation number. Choose the payment method. If "cash" is an option, you must pick up the tickets within the time it says on the site, or they will be released. (Usually within 3 days.) If you choose credit card, you will pay through the ASSIST site (which the Mariinsky also uses). If your card has gone through, the confirmation page will show this in red type at the top of the page. Print the "confirmation certificate" from the confirmation page, and bring it with you when you pick up tickets at the box office. If you are not also bringing the credit card you used to make the purchase, jot down the last four digits of the credit card on the certificate. New Hall

  5. Wow, I wonder why they cast Mandy Woetzel as Beauty. Were there a lot of pairs lifts or throws? (Who was her partner?) I know she was a pairs skater, but there are a lot of beautiful Russian former pairs skaters and ice dancers that aren't still competing. (I would love to see Maria Petrova as Aurora, and she is in her last year of eligible competition.) Did you ever see the Lubovitch Beauty on TV or video? It starred Roslyn Sumners, who had a similar body type and athleticism as Woetzel, and Robin Cousins. They avoided the big partnering moves in that version. There have been US productions of The Nutcracker in the past during the holiday season, which is the lead up to US Nationals. Todd Eldredge and Nicole Bobek skated in one. Bobek became injured during the tour. Although she was reigning US Champion, the US Figure Skating Association did not give her an injury bye to Worlds, which was possible at the time, because the Nutcracker tour wasn't "serious" skating.

  12. Sadly, I'm only going to be in Paris for the weekend. Saturday 19th is skating -- free skates and free dance for Trophee Eric Bompard -- and Sunday I'm going to the Klimt/Kokoshka/Schiele/Moser exhibit and then to see Tristan und Isolde. I leave for London on Monday morning. I did get tickets to Sylvia for Tuesday night, 22 November. I really don't like Manon, which is playing several times during my visit, so I'll skip that and do whatever the college friends I'm meeting have planned.
  13. I had forgotten about The Magic Flute. It's my all-time favorite opera movie. I love the intermission scene where the Queen of the Night, in character, is smoking next to the "No Smoking" sign.
