1. The mime at the beginning and end of the opera was a creation of Stephen Wadsworth. Speight Jenkins explained in a post-production Q&A that everyone in the audience at the time the opera was created would have known the stories of the House of Aetreus backwards and forwards, and wouldn't need that backstory to establish the opera's context.
2. The Balanchine Trust certainly knows to whom the rights have been assigned and to which companies repetiteurs have been sent. A spot check indicates that the "Stagings" section is up to date to sometime in 2004. There's nothing in the press release that indicates how often the site will be updated. However, according to the site, http://www.balanchine.org/balanchine/introduction.jsp
3. According to The Seattle Times, Mayor Nickels was to announce last Wednesday a deal with Seattle Opera to lease the dark Mercer Arena, where Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet performed during the renovation of McCaw Hall. The deal still needs to be approved by the city counsel. According to the article, the Opera would pay for the renovation, possibly partially through the sale of a parking lot owned by the Opera and currently leased to Teatro Zinzanni. The renovated building would house the administrative offices and the scenic and costume shops, where they would move from Renton (south of Seattle). Accordingly to the editorial in The Seattle Times on Friday, which is in favor of the agreement,
4. The staging in Seattle and New York is the same. The set is divided into three parts: the interior part takes up almost 80% of the stage, with about 20% of the stage(right) an exterior outside the temple of Diana. About 75% of the interior (stage left) is the temple of Diana, with 25% an antechamber (stage right) which also serves as the holding cell for Pylades and Orestes. The scene opens with Diana asleep upstage next to the wall that separates the temple interior from the antechamber, which puts her about center stage. On the opposite side of the temple (stage left) is a rectangular box, the long part going up and downstage, that is the altar to Diana. In the mime, Clytemnaestra hugs the young Iphegenia, when Agemmemnon blusters in, pulls Iphigenia away, puts her on top of the altar, and starts to stab her. Diana descends from the flies, grabs Iphigenia, and carries her towards the heavens, as Clytemnaestra rails (physically) at Agemmemnon. The adult Iphigenia awakens from the nightmarish reliving of the attempted sacrifice.
5. I seem to catch the broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera at the end of the first act (a couple on Sirius, this morning's over commercial radio), and I hope to hear the entire opera from the Met, but from what I've heard so far, I am loving Susan Graham's performance as Iphigenia -- her voice is gorgeous and steady as a rock -- and Louis Langree's conducting -- idomatic and rich. I think Domingo sounds remarkable, but it's a tenor version, and I prefer the baritone version and Polegato, though the singing is superb.
6. December 8, 2007 Limón Dance Company performed an all-Limón program in Philadelphia. Roslyn Sulcas reviews Chamber Dance Project for The New York Times. Rachel Howard reviews Margaret Jenkins' "Other Suns" for the San Francisco Chronicle. Gia Kourlas reviews Nugent & Matteson Dance at Danspace Project for The New York Times. Claudia La Rocco reviews dance duo roonninschilds' "C.L.U.E" in The New York Times.
7. I remember pre-ordering the Eakins Press version and being so careful with it. I was very happy when the Viking version was published, because I didn't feel bad about referring to it often, leading to some wear and tear. It's so great to have this online, a format in which revisions can be made very easily when new material is found and vetted.
8. I've also read frequently that when there is a boy in class, the girls and girls' parents feels that the boys get inordinate amounts of attention, scholarships, and roles. I wonder if these are different schools, or if in the same class the perception of the boys is radically different than the perception of the girls.
9. Sandra Kurtz attended Next Fest NW and reviewed it for Seattle Weekly. Next Fest NW Is a Festival of the New: Dance live and on film.
10. I think that "Smiles of a Summer Night" would make a great ballet. There'd be a wonderful part for an older character dancer (Fredrik Egerman) and contrast between all of the couples for quite different pas de deux: Egerman and his young wife, Anne, Egerman and the actress Desiree Armfeldt, the catty little scene between Anne and Charlotte Malcolm, several different kinds for Charlotte and the Count, the pas de trois between Egerman, Count Malcolm, and Armfeldt, comic scenes between Petra and Henrik and Petra and Frid. There are plenty of opportunities for solos of all temperament. The core cast would be 7-8, and the costumes would be divine. For music -- no Sondheim! Maybe some songs by Sjoberg, including the ravishing "Tonerna" if vocals were used. I know Sibelius is Finnish, not Swedish, but maybe we could sneak him in. I don't know of many Swedish composers, I'm afraid.
11. Ballet Talk for Dancers' membership is dance students, dancers, dance teachers, nutritionists, pointe shoe experts, and backstage people (designers, costumers, etc.). We have some overlap, but the majority of teachers are on BT4D. Since this is off-topic for our board, I'm closing it.

We also have a calendar -- see the top of each page -- which lists the performances for POB and Royal Ballet (as they were published this summer), and includes ticket buying information. Of course, verifying venues and times is important -- we just found out that three POB school performances were cancelled, and two replacement performances scheduled. Also, the Royal Ballet has not updated its calendar with performances in April and May I'm afraid with your dates you're going to miss the POB school performances, which are scheduled now for April 13, 14, and 19. But there are performances of the Nureyev/Balanchine/Forsythe triple bill at Opera Bastille and Mats Ek at Palais Garnier during your Paris trip, and performances of "Sleeping Beauty" and the Serenade/New Barandstrup/Homage to the Queen triple bill during your London trip. There's a full schedule listing in this .pdf for the Royal Ballet: http://info.royaloperahouse.org/AfcStyle/D...let200708%2Epdf
