  1. Wow! 42 years since they showed that. What have they been waiting for! Can you imagine going to ABT now with such a line-up of amazing talent? So sad that several of them are no longer with us -- Bujones, Nagy, Wright, among others. I noted that Makarova didn't try the fouettes, but had a very nice substitute. It was always reported that she hated those. Perhaps a word to a certain someone else who has problems with them?
  2. Just started: http://lincolncenter.org/lincoln-center-at-home/show/american-ballet-theatre-at-the-metropolitan-opera-house-1978-109
  3. If you go to the listings page, click "learn more" - it varies program to program http://lincolncenter.org/lincoln-center-at-home/series/dance-week For the ABT mixed bill: Available from Sunday, May 31 at 8:00 pm ET, then for a limited time on demand For the SAB Workshop: Available from Monday, June 1 at 7:00 pm ET until Friday, June 5 at 7:00 pm ET For the NYCB Coppelia: Available from Tuesday, June 2 at 8:00 pm ET until Friday, July 17 at 8:00 pm ET For the Tribute to Balanchine: Available from Wednesday, June 3 at 8:00 pm ET until Saturday, July 18 at 8:00 pm ET MSND is still on-line, but I don't know for how long:
  4. Watching it now for the second time. One of my top ten Balanchine ballets. I'm pretty sure this is the first complete recording available. Lots of snippets here and there, but not the complete thing. I did watch some archival tape at NYPL Dance Collection to see original casts in the early 70s. I think they all wore white leotards (or was it all black?). The pink-white-black contrast didn't come in until later.
  5. My understanding is that the copyright on the original Firebird score (1910) had expired. Stravinsky came up with the Firebird Suite with a new copyright and Balanchine used that so his friend Stravinsky could continue to get royalties on the performance. I can't seem to find on-line documentation of this, unfortunately, but it makes sense.
  6. Opera Colorado just announced that its performances scheduled for November 2020 will be performed in late June 2021. The rest of the season will open in February 2021. They perform in the same Opera House used by the Colorado Ballet. I'm hoping they can reschedule their October Giselle to late spring, but nothing has been announced.
  7. This is a oldie but goodie, but I know there are fans of Nina Ananiashvili on this site. Don't miss her final performance as Kitri, with three different Basilios! June 27, 2008. State Ballet of Georgia
  8. I don't disagree, but it occurs to me that the "debut deferred" series is also a message to some of their rising stars (e.g., Aran Bell) that he's appreciated and they hope he doesn't leave. As discussed elsewhere, I wonder if ABT controls the rights to some of the things we most want to see, like the Live from Lincoln Center series that's scheduled for next week. The archival footage I've looked at in the NYPL Dance Collection is definitely not suitable for even on-line showing. They've bounced around through so many theaters, even the archival footage might be unacceptable. E.g., the world premiere of Push Comes to Shove in January 1976 (a memory I shall always treasure!) was at the Uris Theater, which has been torn down and might not have had minimally acceptable recording facilities. I don't know. The world premieres of Baryshnikov's Don Quixote and his Nutcracker were both at the Kennedy Center in the late 70s. KenCen seems to have recording facilities, but we don't know what they chose to save.
  9. Very gloomy. In New Zealand, which seems to be leading the planet in getting a grip on COVID-19, the Ballet is hoping to perform in their country starting August 20. https://www.broadwayworld.com/new-zealand/article/Royal-New-Zealand-Ballet-Company-Rehearses-on-Zoom-Hopes-to-Return-to-Performing-Soon-20200524 It makes you wonder why Segerstrom hasn't cancelled anything past May 31! For those of us with tickets to LaScala in late July, it would be nice if they'd get on with what seems to be inevitable. Instead, they are still selling tickets! https://www.scfta.org/
  10. APOLOGIES for creating all this confusion. It's worth checking out regardless.
  11. Perm Opera Ballet is live-streaming Ashton's Les Patineurs (which they call Winter Dreams). They normally leave things on-line for a few days:
  12. Thank you. Here's the link it sends you to: https://linktr.ee/Miamicityballet
  13. I went to the MCB web site to try to find this and especially to make the donation that I gather is required, but can't find anything. Nothing on Instagram either. Do you have a link to this that you could post? I've never seen this in the theater and I'm curious.

  15. And if we're lucky, Bolshoi will bring the Ratmansky Giselle to the Kennedy Center that same fall! Here's hoping!

Join us on Monday, June 1 for the School of American Ballet’s first-ever Virtual Workshop Performance Celebration, in support of the SAB Response Fund! 18. Perm Opera Ballet is streaming their Don Quixote this morning:
  19. Mariinsky just started free streaming of the Petipa Gala: The Seasons Act II of Midsummer Night's Dream Act III of Sleeping Beauty https://mariinsky.tv/e
  20. Ballet Arizona is streaming Square Dance for the next 24 hours on their YouTube Channel. And, on May 31, Symphony in 3 Movements! That's the same day that Lincoln Center is streaming the 1978 Theme & Variations with Kirkland and Baryshnikov! https://balletaz.org/virtual-events/
  21. Baryshnikov in Company Business with Gene Hackman (1991) is now on Amazon Prime. No dancing, just acting.
  22. With the announcement of the Dance Week schedule from Live at Lincoln Center, we can see another problem: apparently Lincoln Center, not ABT, owns the rights to some of the best stuff, most notably the mixed bill in spring 1978. If you've spent some time at the NYPL Dance Collection looking at ABT's archival material, it is definitely not acceptable for broadcast. (I looked up their recordings of the original Kirkland-Baryshnikov performances of the Baryshnikov Don Quixote from spring 1978, e.g. Worth seeing if you're a serious balletomane, but not something they'd want to release in the current environment.)
  23. This actually might mean that recorded music becomes the norm for ballet performances until an effective and widely available vaccine becomes available!
  24. Holy Moly! What a week this is going to be. And May 31: the legendary performance of T&V by Kirkland-Baryshnikov! Until now, the only way to see this is that hideously blurred version on YouTube - or a trip to the NYPL Dance Collection. For years/decades people like us have been pleading for them to release this on VHS/DVD. Be still my heart!
  25. No surprise, but the Vail Dance Festival for 2020 has been cancelled: View this email in your browser Dear Vail Dance Festival Community, It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you of the cancelation of the 2020 Vail Dance Festival. This difficult decision was made in the interest of the safety and well-being of artists, staff and audiences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We had hoped to be able to present some version of the Festival this summer, but with great reluctance have now concluded that it is simply not safe to do so. The Festival is a place of intense collaboration among our artists, and we look forward to the creative energy that will be more powerful than ever when we are all able to be together again next summer.” - Damian Woetzel, Artistic Director Preparations are already underway for the return of live performances in the summer of 2021, with Opening Night scheduled for July 30th. We are also preparing to host a digital version of the Festival during the planned July 31 - Aug 11 dates, which will include unique performances and commissions from past Vail seasons, as well as online forums and educational content featuring dance and music luminaries associated with the Festival. More information will be provided on vaildance.org and our social channels in the coming weeks. "It is difficult to think about not having the Festival this summer in Vail, but we will continue to connect through dance from a distance until we can gather again in person. We are committed to making decisions this year to protect the health and well-being of our community in the short-term while ensuring the future viability of this incredible Festival for years to come." - Sarah Johnson, Vail Valley Foundation Senior Vice President for Education & the Arts If you purchased tickets to the Vail Dance Festival, the following options are available: 1) DONATE - We ask that you please consider donating your ticket purchase to the Vail Dance Festival. These donations will provide operational support and help secure our future. 2) EXCHANGE - You may convert the value of your ticket(s) to a credit that can be applied to a future ticket purchase. 3) REFUND - If you wish to request a full or partial refund of your ticket purchase, please contact the Box Office directly at boxoffice@vvf.org.
