Will anyone be competing or attending? Has anyone attended in the past? Any info for me?
  2. I have always reasoned that they are called Miseries because they have to stand still with their arms overhead for so long during the Prelude.
  3. I had many favorites at ABT, NYCB, Stuttgart and Royal Ballet in the 70s and 80s, but wanted to mention Joey Carmen and Chris Jensen who danced with Joffrey in the early 70s. They were both medium size and could dance allegro parts, "Interplay" being an example, and then come back after intermission to dance Ashton's "Monotones II" with superb skill control.
  4. I've heard them called that though I am not sure they are usually listed in the program as such. Maybe Victoria can give us more information about that title.
  5. There was also a wonderful revival of "Carousel" at Lincoln Center about ten years ago with choreography by Sir Kenneth MacMillan.
  6. Nice to hear that they will not discard Canfields "OBT Exposed" idea. The park blocks are so pretty and the people really get to know the company that way.
  7. How could I have forgotten to include "In G Major" on my list? Gershwin is fun too! Yes about Mofid.
  8. How this thread is making me want to see an all Robbins evening. "Goldberg Variations, "Dances at a Gathering" and "The Concert". Probably an odd mix, but this is my dream night. Dale, I saw Farrell with Afshin Mofid in "Afternoon of a Faun". Did you see that?
  9. I went to public school in Dade County - Florida, so the answer is no.
  10. That makes a lot of sense. In episode three of "Elizabeth R", The Queen's favorite is flirting with the woman who will become his second wife, while they are dancing La Volta.
  11. Thanks for that (he says with a grin)!
  12. Saw Nichols and as always loved her. Also saw Lavery with Makarova, not at Lincoln Center.
  13. BTW, Paul Sutherland used to throw in a fifth double tour!
  14. I'm almost certain I saw Farrell in "Other Dances". I love "Dances at a Gathering", "Interplay", "The Four Seasons", "Fancy Free", "In The Night", "Other Dances", "The Goldberg Variations" (a lot!), "The Cage", "The Concert", "Moves" and "New York Export, Opus Jazz" which was done by The Joffrey in the seventies. I think I like Robbins.
  15. La Volta must have been a respectable dance, as it was danced at court. Does anyone think it was pushing the envelope? The man placed his hands on the womans waist and lifted her. It looks as if the couples were making more body contact than the other court dances I've seen. Psavola, if you have anything you can share, I'm sure it would be appreciated.
  16. Thanks for the Jeanne D' Arc info Obbligato. I've never read "Little Women" but I love the most recent movie. I look at the women and think this is what Taglioni and her contemporaries must have looked like. Diane, though I didn't read Hesse until I was in my twenties, I have to say that he is one of my favorites. I often return to "Narcissus and Goldmund" and "Siddhartha" -- two of my favorite stories ever!
  17. The New York International Ballet Competition is coming soon. Will anyone be participating or attending?
  18. Please keep us posted Old Fashioned. I've only seen pictures of Sara Webb, but from that alone I think she must be special.
  19. The scene in "Bye Bye Birdie" is hysterical, but I think it is the Rose Adagio from "Sleeping Beauty". At least it is the Rose Adagio music. I love the ballerina's posture after she gets up from her fall.
  20. Thanks for the info on Carmena, Nina. I've always loved "Interplay". How do the guys do with the consecutive double tours? I think the last guy has to do four double tours in a row. When you say Carmena 'finishes all steps', are you saying that a lot of NYCB dancers do not?
  21. Oh my gosh! I guess Bernadette really did have nothing to complain about!
  22. I thought Korbes was really pretty last summer when she stepped in for Muniers in "Tchaikovsky Suite No Three". "Interplay" is no piece of cake technically so she must be strong. I don't think I've seen Carmena dance. Could you elaborate for me Ciara?
  23. When I was in elementary school I had no patience for reading but really liked the pictures of Joan of Arc praying to the archangels and burning at the stake. I did read a book called "To Dance, To Dream", which had short stories of great ballerinas. I especially remember the chapter about Taglioni. In high school I loved "Giants in the Earth" by Ole Rolvag and "Nicholas and Alexandra" by Robert K. Massie. I read "Rebecca" after high school and loved it. "My Cousin Rachel" is another good one by DuMaurier.
