Trinidad Vives named Acting Artistic Director (through January 2024)

Recommended Posts

I guess that "Acting Artistic Director" sounds better than "Interim Artistic Director", but her role is the latter since there is no Artistic Director for her to act in place of. Nevertheless, this is interesting, and to me surprising, news (IMHO, it would make a lot of sense for Gillian Murphy and Ethan Stiefel to take over the WB).

Washington Ballet plays second fiddle to all the large national and international companies coming through the Kennedy Center.

Anyone with connections to Mary Day is either established somewhere else or too old.

DC is not really an arts town. Yes, there are all the museums, KC, etc but it is a not a place where young people are coming to create.

DC has a high cost of living compared to the locations of other small companies.

Just a start….

This is concerning.  TWB must be a pretty prestigious position.  Could it be the debt or difficulty obtaining performance space that is making the job not attractive?

Another problem might be that the board of directors doesn't know what it wants or needs.  Septime Weber the director before Kent had great marketing skills that connected with the community.  His choreography has been ditched except for the customized to DC Nutcracker.

Unfortunate that they dumped Weber. Colorado Ballet has shown his Alice (in Wonderland) and Wizard of Oz in recent years. Both are great productions with lots of wonderful choreography for serious dance lovers and special effects galore for families. Maybe instead of trying to compete with visiting companies at KenCen, they could try focusing on the DC community!
